Living within your means still resisted

Michel Platini’s Financial Fair Play initiative at Uefa has been one of the more inspiring developments at the top of our game for decades.  It brought spending into line with income throughout the English game and punished what Platini called financial doping.

It has been so effective, Platini now promises to relax the rules.  The blame does not all sit with Platini.  Uefa are dealing with 10 legal challenges to the rules, with complainant clubs citing European Law in their defence.  The big football powers are split.  The English appear in favour of FPP (Manchester City aside), while many stressed clubs across Europe are in opposition.

The concept of living within your means is still resisted in our game, not just in barred hold-outs in Scotland.

  1. The Green Man on

    Tom McLaughlin

Tom, I could tell many a story very similar in tone…I even share your name.

I have watched Celtic since I was 5 yrs old, one of my first memories as a human being, was watching Bobby Lennox at Paradise.

Now, every time I go to see Celtic, im very aware that it is a bent league, the referees are shameless.

We cannot go on like this…pretending that there is no cheating, its rife.

Dave King being passed as fit and proper….gives them the right to cheat.

    Im fed up with it.

  2. Tom, I sometimes have had a few problems with some of your posts but I absolutely loved the one at 21.10. Really really loved it, I’m signing off for 9 or 10 days, no flounce just Hols and I’m banned from CQN during Hols. I’m happy to be signing off with your post up there because there is nothing left I could say to improve on that,

    God Bless your Dad.

  3. After today and our club’s lack of response to the acceptance of blatant misinterpretation of the rules by the SFA, it really is truly obvious that they really are “the people” and that they are an integral part of the the very fabric of Scottish Society and rules and laws don’t apply to them.

Ach well ghuys to the back of the bus again, we had our chance but didn’t want to cause waves.

Maybe the MIBs will ease off and we should be grateful to them. MFA.

  4. Is it now a time to petition our club and encourage fans of other clubs , to register no confidence in the governance of our game in Scottish football?

    ———————————————————————–

For a club that defrauded HMRC, and went into liquidation rather than pay its debtors, there is no one more fit and proper than a glib and shameless liar with 41 convictions for tax fraud. A perfect fit. So the SFA called that one right.

Can’t believe it won’t end in tears for them, again.

As to the wider issue of the governance of the game, walking away from Scottish football isn’t the answer, as some suggest. Fergus showed what can be done if you go after them armed with the facts. We need to encourage the current board to show a bit more of his steel.

  5. bern, If you are a Celt you have nothing to worry about. Ashley has multiples of whatever King has, rich guys don’t get rich by backing losers. Hail Hail & Bye CQN for a week or two.

Enjoyed your words from the heart.

I see my experience with my dad similar. God rest him.

  7. thomthetim

What he threatened them with is not the issue, nor indeed what they threatened Celtic with. Bob Kelly knew that the SFA had no legal leg to stand on.

When you know that the other guy is firing blanks and is bluffing – you can put on a show of defiance.

We all loved it of course. Celtic had endured decades of deniable-rich discrimination where they had no option but to suck it up. Not that time.

The flag requirement was illegal and unenforceable; the SFA only realized this after their soiled mouthpiece made the requirement, as opposed to Sir Bob who got sound legal advice before he said No.

I found this timeless sentence on Celtic Wiki – it could equally apply this season.

“The entire events illustrate the crude attempts by the authorities to use their own ignorance and bigotry to challenge and blacken the name of our club to mask their own deficiencies.”

Was going to have a read at the “On Fields Of Green’ article there, on the SFA fiasco with King.

The scond line of the article quoted Justin Currie. From Del Amitri.

Never made it any further than that.

  9. Tom….

Well said re supporting Celtic. But, I can see why supporters are getting angry.

As you said, your dad watched the cheating years, no doubt, like all my family, he was sickened by it.

The difference being now…the internet/timternet highlights what the smsm fail to provide…”The Truth”… in this day and age, the Scottish game has become a laughing stock.

How a man that has been dragged through the courts in SA and pay up what he did to avoid a sentence, whilst on the board that killed their team be deemed fit and proper…is just a kick in the stones to every member club.

As you know, I work witha lot of huns and they just expect these decisions, as the watp is kicking in again.

It must be challenged, or it will be back to the old ways. HH

  10. Tom McG

I wanted Celtic to say more, I want them to say more now. However, a good while ago I resigned myself to the fact that was never going to happen.

I got the chance to speak to PL last night. I suggested a way that may go some way to placate those Celtic supporters whose continued support may be dependent on how we as a club treat Newco should they be promoted.

That may sound arrogant, I don’t think I was, it’s just a simple suggestion from a Celtic supporter. Peter might have walked away thinking, “What a rocket!” and that’s fine but I know I’ve had my say.

Regardless, like you my support will not be defined by the monkeys and I’ll continue my support.

  11. Cheers ghuys, contact made with HebCelt and arrangements made. What a wonderful site this is. Roll on Sunday.

  12. Tomthethim/Hamilton

Derry City may have changed leagues but it was not an aesy transition.

When they left the Irish League they became a junior club. Most of their senior players joined Finn Harps.

It took 12 years before they could join the League Of Ireland.

Some people should be careful what they wish for

  13. Hamiltontim –

I don’t think it was arrogant. I’m sure it wasn’t the first time PL had heard it, so it would hopefully reiterate what a lot of supporters are thinking.

He will know it is important for him to be aware of that.

  14. Tom McLoughlin @ 9.10. Lovely post. Sometimes the negativity here really annoys me but like you, Celtic has been a lifelong passion for me and nothing the SFA do will diminish my grá for the Mighty Glasgow Celtic. I just can’t get enough!

  15. Yeah, great post by Tom at 21:10, sums it all up.

Our love of our club is something that has been passed on down the generations, it is bigger and stronger than their shenanigans.

Im still saying, that there is no place for cheating and corruption in football.

We should not be ignoring it, by saying, That’s the way its always been.

    That is a total cop-out.

The more you accept it, the more it will happen.

Things don’t need to be this way….it can be challenged, and the SFA should be cleansed from top to bottom.

Scottish Football….using the preferred methodology of the SFA….is “on the balance of possibilities” corrupt.

    Am I wrong?

I know what the FOD will do. Supremacy cheats do what supremast cheats are.

We need to pick our battles with the corrupt authorities and win them ruthlessly. So that the begin to fear the consequences of being caught cheating. Like Fergus did with Farry and we should have done with Rogue-ilvie.

HT – I hope that PL did listen. He needs to.

PS how many of your expected this decision? It’s come as no surprise to me.

  20. eddieinkirkmichael on

I simply refuse to believe that any poster on this site for one nano second ever thought the SFA would deny the Glab and Shameless liar a seat on the board at Sevco.

We have known for months that the SFA would give him the green light to take control so why all of a sudden are some acting like 2 year olds now it’s been made public?

We have all known what the SFA is and how they do things when it comes to clubs from Govan. It’s been this way for decades so why are some surprised?

At the end of the day, a very rich man will have to be prepared to spend his entire fortune trying to catch us. Is there anyone who honestly thinks the GSL is prepared to do that?

  21. Tom McL

I’m with you there. We must be ages – 53 years for me too – and counting.

    HT,

“You’re right I am validating their existence but only in so much as they’re a football club who Celtic will compete against. There’s no acknowledgement of them as anything other than a rival, they are not ‘Rangers’ because that club ceased to be in 2012.

Derry City were afforded the opportunity to join another league but that doesn’t necessarily mean that Celtic would be afforded the same courtesy.

For me personally, it’s too great a risk.”

    ****

Of course, in the real world it is too big a risk to make a unilateral decision to quit.

My view was solely based on the logic of the situation.

But, as we all know, love of our club is no based on logic alone.

Football is a game of emotions and, I believe, our support has more to be emotional about than most.

That does not alter the fact that we are participating in and condoning a corrupt game.

Each of us has his/her own way of dealing with that reality.

Some, most, maintain the emotional and financial commitment to Celtic.

Some cannot see their way to contribute any longer.

No one is right and no one is wrong

    Head and Heart involved.

Personally, I will never leave Celtic in my heart, even though my ability to attend games is practically nil, having left Glasgow 37 years ago.

I therefore don’t have a decision to make.

I would not support any boycotting of Celtic, as I see them and Scottish football, as victims of the SFA corruption, with only one vote and Association restrictions for going “outside”.

What I have advocated is boycotting Scottish Cup ties at Hampden.

Not much of a gesture, but a gesture ll the same.

This day has been a long time coming. Ever since the 5 way Agreement saw the half light and I believe that a lot of the anger that has been generated on here, much of it from previously calm and measured posters, has come from the knowledge that we were being shafted and not one Establishment voice from politicians through to the combined media raised a finger against it.

Actually, one finger was raised, but it was against us!

This day has been on the cards since Murray D received the £1 coin.

It may have been by a tortuous route, but the destination was ordained.

Definitely finishing at that, as I have overshot rant mode.

    God Bless all Celtic men.
