    All it takes is practice.

Practice in front of thousands of people with a title on the line, perhaps.

Mark Noble, the best penalty taker in the EPL has never practiced a penalty in training. Le Tissier rarely did

  2. Watching highlights again, we should sign that Tony Macaroni fella, he was all over the pitch.

  3. CELTIC40ME on 6TH MARCH 2022 6:58 PM

    Irrelevant.

Every professional footballer should be capable of taking penalties.

    All it takes is practice.

Practice until it’s all muscle memory. No thought required.

  4. ERNIE,

Any stats on success rate for penalties taken by all professional players in past 5 years?

  5. ERNIE LYNCH on 6TH MARCH 2022 7:54 PM

Why am I reading that in a robot voice?

  6. RON BACARDI on 6TH MARCH 2022 8:09 PM

    No.

    Why would I?

Is there a better approach to improving the skill of penalty taking than practice?

  7. Thought you’d appreciate the statement as question format of my post

(Also to be read in a robot voice)

  8. I suppose any goalie can save a penalty, just takes practice until it’s memory

  9. I suppose any goalie can save a penalty as well, just takes practice until it’s memory

  10. Great result today. Potential banana skin out the way. On a crap surface too. Not as stressful a game as anticipated. Well done today.

Ange got team selection spot on. I would never, in a million years, have left my best full back on the bench today – just shows how much we (internet managers) know :-)

Goals change games. Our early goal made a huge difference. It’s less stressful playing with a lead. We never lost that lead, by controlling the tempo and scrapping for loose balls. Even Tom won his share of duels today (not his strong point, usually). Everyone got stuck in today. Great team/squad effort.

I thought Starfelt had another solid performance (following on from Wed’s solid show). He impressed me more than CCV in both games. (Maybe because I rate CCV higher overall?)

No easy games at this stage. St Mirren at home last Wed is a prime example. We’ll need to earn every point – but we’re in a great position.

Can’t wait til our next game.

  11. Of course if we don’t want to hear some the songs we are singing

We need to come up with alternatives…..

  12. And the one true God,took all that was good from his magnificent son,St George Connelly, and fused it with, the best of one of his wonderous Saints,The Blessed Virgil of Van Dijk, and God saw that it was good.

ThenGod presented this wonder to the world, saying,

    LET THERE BE LAWAL

  13. I worked for someone once who told us underlings that the Romanian boys chess team conquered the world because the teachers would lock them in a cupboard if they lost a practice match. It was a weird attempt at getting us to work harder, all it did was make us think he was a crackpot.

However, thinking about it now, maybe he had a point. Something to suggest to Ange at the next Q&A perhaps ?

Away and bile yer heid Gerry ya no markx

People like you, with half of a primary education always give me a wee sad laugh.

    A real quarter wit.

Get someone to explain that to you.

Our club does not need no marks (note proper spelling) like folks such as your fine self.

‘I suppose any goalie can save a penalty, just takes practice until it’s memory’

What are the known quantities for a penalty taker?

    The ball.

The position of the ball that is to be kicked.

The position of the net into which the ball is to be kicked.

What are the known quantities for a keeper?

A football travelling at an unknown speed along an unknown trajectory.

Now compare and contrast how practising penalty taking compares with penalty saving.

Scoring penalties isn’t some weird innate talent that’s only bestowed on a favoured few. It’s a skill that any professional footballer should be able to acquire.

  16. fanadpatriot on

Taking penalties is in the mind ,don’t think about the goalkeeper ,just hit the ball ,

Head down hit the ball ,simple really .

  17. FANADPATRIOT on 6TH MARCH 2022 8:28 PM

It’s a lot simpler if you’ve perfected the skill by practising it.

And we shouldn’t need reminding it that some games can be decided by penalty shoot outs, so having one or two favoured takers is never going to be enough.

  18. ERNIE,

I saw somewhere that goalkeepers saved 30% of penalty kicks. Does not include the taker blasting it over bar or wide or hitting the bar or post.

  19. fanadpatriot on

    Ernie Lynch

Honestly the most penalties missed is because the taker is thinking more of the goalkeeper than hitting the ball .

Concentrate on hitting the ball ,head down then strike .

Don’t listen to the noise round about you

  20. Awe Naw, he’s tryin to tell us how to take a penalty an aw noo….

“Talking about taking penalties,my son took them in school ,juvenile and junior level never missed one ,all in the same corner.

He always said if he hit them hard enough no goalkeeper would safe them”

    —————————————-

I believe that, because that is what I used to do. However, here is the key point – no one was keeping records on my penalties, or your son’s, and then advising the goalkeeper. That is what makes McGregor’s hopeless performance even more inexplicable. Teams do their homework, Callum!

  22. Ernie

At what age do you think a professional footballer has the muscle memory to kick a static ball 12yards, unchallenged in the right direction. That’s all the muscle memory is, after all: a kicking movement to kick the ball hard in the direction they want to.

I reckon by the time they’re adults

What’s so different about taking a penalty?
