A penalty involves kicking a ball a set distance to hit a set target. That’s where the muscle memory comes in.

Would be interesting to see stats on success rate of penalties when drawing or losing v 2 or 3 goals up. Pressure forces mistakes in most sports. Having said that the one thing that gets me is missing the target. If you arent confident you can hit the corner with accuracy it has to be a smash down the middle.

All these people who say penalty taking is easy have never taken one against a keeper who’s 6 ft 5 or so with longer arms as well.
And who has studied every one you’ve taken in the last few years.

While I’m on, another thing about penalty shoot outs is that the first team to miss one, often goes onto win.
It’s like that the miss takes the pressure off the subsequent kickers in that they’re not the only person to blame if they lose.
Conversely, it piles the anxiety onto the opposing side – if they miss, they’ve blown the win.
Celtic against Spartak was a perfect example – I think Naka missed first.

A penalty involves kicking a ball a set distance to hit a set target.
That covers every time someone kicks a football.
Perhaps you’re suggesting that kicking a football specifically 12 yards involves some sort of muscle memory that isn’t learned over the course of years of training to kick the ball many different distances, 12 yards included in the desired direction
I think the muscle memory is there
The difference is pressure, which can’t be practiced. Unless they get sent to the cupboard.
celtic40me on
It’s not like 12yards is the specific distance anyway. They aren’t kicking it to stop on the line

I believe taking a penalty is a matter of muscle memory and an exercise in dealing with pressure.
Constant repetitive taking of penalties,
Shooting into different parts of the goal, creates both muscle memory and confidence.
Many years ago I read about Italian players spending hours per week, after normal training, practising nothing but penalties and free kicks.
Not having 7 or 8 players at the top of their game, when taking penalties, can be the difference between progressing in a cup competition or not. As in any professional sport, the less you have to leave to chance, the better.

Quite. In this case it’s the specific task of kicking a football in the desired direction with the desired force. Something which Calmac would have done enough times before now to have the muscle memory.
The only difference is the change in situation, not the action of kicking.
I can understand the argument fir practicing free kicks, it’s a specific skill which needs different mechanics to a “normal” shot or pass. But not a penalty. Pass it in, smash it down the middle, high into the roof, all part of the same movements used everyday as a pro footballer.

Hi Bhoys
How can it be muscle memory taking penalties not every penalty is hit in the same direction with the same force with the same size obstacle in the way or said obstacles movements. Tke Tommy Gemmells penalties almost all hit with a lot of power then contrast with Jossips recent panenka how are they the same penalties. Even the rules for the obstacles (goalkeepers) are different now. Not looking for a debate just can’t see how it could be down to muscle memory with so many variables involved.
By the way great performance from the bhoys today. Who says Ange doesn’t know how to mix up our playing style. Loved the hunting in packs and snapping into tackles. We should fight fire with fire more often.

Loved every minute of it today. Even the half hour queue to get into the stadium.
The crowd were good and well behind the team. The energy was great between both.
At the game it felt Walsh and officials favoured the home team and their physical approach. It seems the BBC and Sky saw it differently.
That aside it was a really great day to be a Celtic supporter. The strength of the bench plus Julian and Kyogo and Turnbull shows how good a place we are at.
2 nicely spaced out games in 4 weeks before Ibrox should see us in great condition for what should be a title winning game.
6 points ahead with 6 games to go after that and the goal difference advantage should have even the biggest bedwetters on here relaxing a bit.

Of course there is. Bad practice achieves nothing, but wastes time and energy, it can even make things worse
All you’re doing is suggesting practicing what every pro has done all day every day throughout their career. Without trying to recreate the pressure, it’s pointless
Answer my question. How long would it take for a pro footballer to learn the muscle memory necessary to make a penalty a certain goal (as you’ve said should be possible for any pro?)
How many in the penalty team will have to stay back after training for how long? 5 players, 8? The whole team in case of shootouts? Does the whole team have to build the muscle memory to ensure we’re ready for shootouts, or do we just “wing it”
Will it fade?
Muscle memory always struck me as a bit of pseudo-science, but I’m interested to know from someone who knows how it would work
