Look at me, but not at my face

2751

I don’t get the flares thing. It’s not a part of my going-to-see-Celtic tradition. But if it was my thing, I’d have the courage of my convictions, I wouldn’t hide the fact.

There are consequences of bringing flares to football games, always has been. By not having the courage to openly ignite them, those consequences are not personalised to the individuals who regard this as an integral part of what they do at a football game, they are visited upon everyone in the vicinity, as well as the club.

The problem with flares at Celtic games is those who bring them hide the fact – as they clearly know there are consequences, and presumably aren’t too interested in taking responsibility for them. ‘Keen on flares, not keen enough to stand up for them’, is why the issue persists.

I get the attraction to bright, shiny, things, but this isn’t a campaign to bring the vote to disenfranchised people against a force who will execute the offender on sight. It’s about bringing a flare to a football game. If it’s so important, do it openly. If you think Health and Safety are simply wrong, find the evidence and use it in court. Have the courage to change something.  I know lots of Celtic fans who have had the courage to put their name to something they believed in, in recent years.  It’s seldom easy, but it has been done.

But in the years of this debate no one has ever pointed to evidence that igniting flares in a football ground is a clever thing to do. It’s just a ‘look at me’ exercise, ‘But don’t look at my face’, of course.

  1. Wow, 34 pages and counting without Celtic playing.

There’s always a bright side to everything.

Yes Tony, 4 matches, all were won with clean sheets. Either Sinclair or Paddy played through the middle.

    That was a surprise !

Maybe best goalscorer at a push, but best player ?

Think KC is still laughing at Neil Alexander saying one of his old clubs was a “great family Klub” :-)

  5. It’s good to have options. My own feeling is we are short at the back , in height and numbers. It will be a real bonus if we get a fit and healthy Steven Caulker.

Doesn’t seem to bother Brendan too much so that’s good enough for me .

Some outstanding reading on the blog these past few days or so.

    Therapeutic.

Obviously not partial to the fighting and arguing, however it is good education reading all the different opinions.

Fantastic also to see James Forrest taking the time to contribute.

Celtic is a Scottish club, with an unbreakable connection to Ireland.

Open to all – Catholic, Protestant & dissenter.

It’s a beautiful thing, unique and beautiful.

    Best times indeed.

Gerry- a case of what might have been with Hooper, instead he chased the money.

Really enjoyed listening to Kris, brilliant to hear about him & Lenny being so close, they were good fun at the legends game, looks like if he gets the all clear he will be strutting his stuff at Easter Road all things being well with his back

ANy reason why you would single me out on an article in the Scotsman?

It was a wee joke.Stop getting too crabbit.I agree with you on many things.

Not on the GB right enough.

Gerry,I thought Gary was a fantastic wee player for us.Maybe KC just loved partnering him.I agree with what another poster said,”What might have been”.He could have been a legend, and probably all time top scorer against teams playing out of Ibrox.A right wee hun Skelper.

  14. If Dembele is injured that just makes Griffiths act of stupidity even more gauling. In saying that one our best performances last season, 5-0 at Tynecastle to clinch the league, was done without Dembele, Griffiths and Rogic.

Big Tam as false 9, like Roberts played a few times last season, with Sinclair and Forrest either side.

I thought Hooper could have broke loads of records with us, thought him & Anto Stokes were pretty brilliant together, looked like pals on the park and knew exactly where the other was, with Stokesy supplying the ammunition, but as Bada said Hoops will be a rich footballer, could have been a Celtic great but unfortunately for him he is just a half decent ex-Celt now :-)

  16. Incredible article by James Forrest today.James,I think your best ever.

The bit about the Police with the watches was totally new to me.

    The rest was stunning.

G67- i posted during the week we needed another top stroker in this Window, a lot of Bhoys disagreed…..2 strikers never enough for various reasons

KC just said best player he played with was Hooper…

    ……………

Would love Hooper back at Paradise Bada.

A phenomenal striker and magnificent worker too.

Out of all the players who went to England,I thought he would have went to the very top.

Went totally pear shaped for him.

    Bring him home Brendan.

  21. !!BADA BING!! on 23RD JULY 2017 3:11 PM

I was one of those who disagreed ;-). I still don’t see a player of required quality coming to be third choice striker when we usually only play with one. I still think we need a playmaker/no.10 type who can also move up to striker if required. Rogic may be that man in the meantime, or Sinclair. Pity Christie is at Aberdeen, he has played striker before but keeping him for an occasional appearance would have did his development more harm than good

  22. In the ongoing conflict between the GB and the Plc, there can only be one winner. And it will not be the GB. The reason being that at a time of great on the field success, the Plc holds all the aces. The ultimate of these aces is the power to simply tell the GB that it is time up, refund their ST money and tell them openly that they are not wanted. Furthermore, any attempt to circumvent this sanction could be met with legal action.

  23. Getting a third forward is a tricky one . An older guy looking to reignite his career or even a swan song or a youngster with a bright future, happy not to play every week. As we’ve seen with Leigh these guys are the most difficult to keep happy when they don’t start often.

Although I did not follow it up, was there any reason given for Celtic TV apparently packing in last Wednesday?

Qualify for CL group stage Dembele stays, don’t qualify he goes, probably for almost as much money we would make in CL.
