Look at me, but not at my face

2751

I don’t get the flares thing. It’s not a part of my going-to-see-Celtic tradition. But if it was my thing, I’d have the courage of my convictions, I wouldn’t hide the fact.

There are consequences of bringing flares to football games, always has been. By not having the courage to openly ignite them, those consequences are not personalised to the individuals who regard this as an integral part of what they do at a football game, they are visited upon everyone in the vicinity, as well as the club.

The problem with flares at Celtic games is those who bring them hide the fact – as they clearly know there are consequences, and presumably aren’t too interested in taking responsibility for them. ‘Keen on flares, not keen enough to stand up for them’, is why the issue persists.

I get the attraction to bright, shiny, things, but this isn’t a campaign to bring the vote to disenfranchised people against a force who will execute the offender on sight. It’s about bringing a flare to a football game. If it’s so important, do it openly. If you think Health and Safety are simply wrong, find the evidence and use it in court. Have the courage to change something.  I know lots of Celtic fans who have had the courage to put their name to something they believed in, in recent years.  It’s seldom easy, but it has been done.

But in the years of this debate no one has ever pointed to evidence that igniting flares in a football ground is a clever thing to do. It’s just a ‘look at me’ exercise, ‘But don’t look at my face’, of course.

Celtic PLC .. You need to engage ..

As a club we’re doing brilliant on the football park ..

Commercially we’re doing well off it ..

As a Supporter I passionately believe that we should

be a Democratic One Member One Vote Football Club, owned

100% by Celtic Supporters and not even the 50+1German Model ..

This might take 5, 10 or even 20 years but it will evolve ..

Currently 15% of Celtic is already owned by Venture Capitalists,

who can have a seat on the Celtic Board if they want one ..

Now the Plc have in my opinion done well generally, particularly

in view of the Illegal Cheating that’s gone on for at least the 20 years ..

However, where the Plc have badly let down the Celtic Support,

is in not realising that the Celtic Support is its greatest strength ..

For a Plc to continue to ignore the Celtic Support which has put over

£500 million into the club, and yet there is still no Celtic Supporter

Representative on the Board is absolutely scandalous ..

Not only is it scandalous, but it has held Celtic back in so many ways ..

The club must realise that in 2017, the Support is the Club’s greatest

strength .. There are plenty of incredibly talented Celtic Supporters who

have the skills needed, to help bring the Celtic Board and the

Celtic Support together as one ..

Recent events have highlighted even more, that we need Board Room

level Fan Representation, that can give leadership, strategy, guidance

and direction to unite the Celtic Support against our common enemies ..

Please Celtic its 2017, quickly grab the opportunity and bring a Fans

Representative onto the Board as a matter of priority ..

cheers all good here, hope all is well with you and the family, hope a decent result to nil on Wednesday the CL qualifiers can be a bit worrying even though Brendan has maybe made us more confident, Wednesday is massive the CL group stages gives us a season to look forward too, hopefully our next 4 games will get us there, starting with a Scott Sinclair hat trick on Wednesday :-)

  9. Jordan Speith is a Tim , can’t help hoping he does well.

Frank Skinner tells a story in his autobiography of his whole family watching the F,A cup final . Arsenal are playing and they are supporting the other side, can’t remember who, as they are the underdogs, then Pat Rice blessed himself and his Dad decided they would cheer on Arsenal.

  11. I am somewhat ambivalent in regards to the GB. Sometimes they hit the nail on the head in outing rank hypocrisy and in doing so they have incurred the wrath of officialdom. The William Wallace & Booby Sands banner and The Palestinian flag display I fully supported and applauded their effort but at the same time understood that a lot of our less politically minded supporters viewed these displays as nothing more than a deliberate provocation and an embarrassment to Celtic. Also we should not forget The 4 horsemen display along with numerous fantastic TGB Tiffos that have been used by corporate Celtic to promote the football club globally. Am I correct in stating that Celtic PLC did not make any financial contribution to the cost of these displays?

But last week’s banners, if a product of TGB, were undoubtedly counterproductive an almost seemingly bizarre case of self-harm just for the sake of it. Having been raised in a staunchly Irish Republican family from N.Belfast and having lived through the conflict I winced when I saw the banners. Not because I believe that they were trying to directly link either BR or Celtic to any Irish Republican paramilitary organisation or glorify any such group (as they don’t) rather because I instinctively knew that the banners would be immediately construed as offensive and leapt on by those in Scotland and N.Ireland who have no love for our club or Irish republicanism, and bhoy did they while sadly being ably assisted by sections within our own support which I find almost as disappointing as the banners. There was no need for these banners – nothing was gained apart from a childlike GIUY to the Linfield supporters who imo were given the biggest GIRFUY imaginable when they were confronted by a capacity crowd at Celtic park belting out Sean South with the Tricolour flying overhead.

I am also somewhat surprised at the boards over reaction in this instance. Seems the only time they respond quickly is when they are undertaking some punitive action against the Celtic support. ‘Sledgehammer to crack a nut’ is quite an apt description. I assume that Celtic know who the majority of GB members are? Why not ban them rather than 100s of innocent fans. If only they rapidly responded when a Celtic player is subjected to constant racial abuse or has bottles thrown at him or when our support are subjected to unproportionate police action.

  14. Staying away from the GB debate however I do feel that any publicity helps our opponents.

We have a vital 4 weeks ahead, this could set us up for 10 in a row. The oxygen of publicity that the GB crave need exposure on SKY/BT on the big stage.

Their social media presence is limited, they are a very small player in the Ultra Champions League. Celtic Park on a big European night is well documented as a great venue, well before the lads in the GB upped their game.

Hopefully, they will see how self serving their statement is, Celtic are everything to thousands of people. The Green Brigade are everything to their own wee group, no harm in that, just take a step back and ask what would you be without Celtic FC.

Have a good day everyone, HH

  15. I had thought that, having been largely silent on the issue, I might venture into the GB/Board reaction debate today but I still think too many posters are trying to use this sad event to back up their entrenched positions and are not seeing the nuance, or admitting to the unknowns that need to be evaluated before we make an informed judgement.

However, I have decided against it as I do not see the signs that listening ears are open and receptive as yet.

Therefore, I will restrict myself to repeating the one intervention I have made so far in the debate, which is, please listen carefully to the voices of the Celtic fans from the Occupied 6 counties on this one- they have neem more pertinent and informed, on the whole, than many of the contributions from this side of the Irish Sea, including those of the 2 main protagonists, the GB and the Board.

Sincere apologies if I’m indeed wrong with this one, but ….a hay ma doooots……I’ll attempt an explanation…

From what I’ve seen, the CV imagery had only the adapted roadside warning sign for the Bold Patrick, whereas the recent image at issue re the Brigada Emeralda had alongside it…annurra banner, with a graphical rendition of a war-torn North Of Ireland, historical figure in sunnies an’ beret, redolent of combat gear………Now, historical rights an’ wrongs aside for the mo’, that is the crucial difference in the perspective. In my mind the addition of the freedom fighter imagery was the red rag to the bull(shit) witnessed following the game.

If none of this make sense it is because I’ve had a long lunch in An Sugan.

I was not offended by the banners on Wednesday but I don’t suppose I was being targetted. The man in the beret looked like Captain Sensible and the political connections of the other banner were lost on me as well.

As it happens far more people I spoke with post-game commented on the singing of some tunes not heard at matches in years as opposed to the banners and as pointed out much of that was not started by the Green Brigade at all. No objections to the individual songs but there was far too much of it and for about 15 minutes the atmosphere was unexoectedly unpleasant and did not show our support in a positive light. My opinion.

However you mentioned the Bobby Sands/William Wallace banner of nearly 4 years ago. My objection to that was not because I am not politically minded but because it was a big game with AC Milan- instead of helping the atmosphere people round me at least were muttering ‘what did it say? We’ll be in bother for that? and similar. That night they thought it was more important to make a political point than support Celtic and that annoyed me more than the point made by the banners thenselves

I read the Green Brigade statement and found it far less confrontational than others here have and hope things get sorted – they do add a lot to the atmosphere and their politics are nearer mine than what I would imagine the political beliefs of the individual members of the PLC board are. But if we do have to do without them so be it. I went for 40 years without them being there.
