Look at me, but not at my face

2751

I don’t get the flares thing. It’s not a part of my going-to-see-Celtic tradition. But if it was my thing, I’d have the courage of my convictions, I wouldn’t hide the fact.

There are consequences of bringing flares to football games, always has been. By not having the courage to openly ignite them, those consequences are not personalised to the individuals who regard this as an integral part of what they do at a football game, they are visited upon everyone in the vicinity, as well as the club.

The problem with flares at Celtic games is those who bring them hide the fact – as they clearly know there are consequences, and presumably aren’t too interested in taking responsibility for them. ‘Keen on flares, not keen enough to stand up for them’, is why the issue persists.

I get the attraction to bright, shiny, things, but this isn’t a campaign to bring the vote to disenfranchised people against a force who will execute the offender on sight. It’s about bringing a flare to a football game. If it’s so important, do it openly. If you think Health and Safety are simply wrong, find the evidence and use it in court. Have the courage to change something.  I know lots of Celtic fans who have had the courage to put their name to something they believed in, in recent years.  It’s seldom easy, but it has been done.

But in the years of this debate no one has ever pointed to evidence that igniting flares in a football ground is a clever thing to do. It’s just a ‘look at me’ exercise, ‘But don’t look at my face’, of course.

I have said very little on the GB apart from their disinterest in tackling the corruption in the game and only because they accused the club of the same.

However I have a long memory and I recall an Open Meeting at the Celtic Supporters Club where again the issue was a banner at a CL game and a GB spokesman attempted to justify it to the large audience.

He was rounded upon because he acknowledged they knew it would cost the club money and he was reminded that ultimately it was those at the meeting who paid it and what right did GB have to make such a decision?

As I recall sentiment that was then strongly in favour of the GB switched, and the benefit of that switch has by and large been felt by both the GB and the support in general in the form of good GB behaviour that is manifest at games.

However what I am seeing across the years of personal perspective is an incorrigible group, led by faceless men ,who take decisions by a method unknown, some that are good and some that are bad. The good ones reflect well on both the GB and Celtic just as the bad ones reflect on both.

the question for me is who takes the banner decisions who do they discuss them with and why is the SLO not involved in those discussions.

The CSA and the CST are properly constituted and accountable and its a bit ironic looking for the same from the SFA/SPFL but not looking for it nearer home.

For me, and I recognise my idealism, being Celtic should be about bringing out the best in us, not the worst.

That’ll be the new board with a Sevco representative on it and Peter Lawwell gone?

    Running away?

As long as ALL the evidence is taken into account & questions as to why it was not provided are looked at there can be no complaints at outcome.

The Terms of Reference will be important, its the SPFL’s last chance to do the right thing in the right way.

  8. It would seem reasonable (not to say necessary) to expect SPFL new-guy and Rangers* MD, Stewart Robertson, to excuse himself from consideration of Old Rangers’ use of EBTs …

  9. I want to know a lot more about this review, what it involves timescale wise, who will be doing the reviewing and sanctions available if necessary, the fact they have kept this in house is not a good sign in my opinion.A rigged review is not what the game needs.

I think I anticipated your cynicism in my previous.

The evidence of deliberate deception of the LNS commission is very very persuasive. Its on line at

and any investigation that ignores it is worthless.

RFC had a man on the SPL Board when they were not allowed back into the top tier SPL so I’m not sure what difference he might make.

In fact if he has any sense he will accept that cheating did take place and offer to give up those trophies and get TRFC and the game back on a road to trust.

  12. “allowed back” they were never in it. This is about the dead club and their trophies won through cheating the tax man, this present incarnation has won nothing other than divisional titles. The continuation myth also needs to go and now

That is never going to happen

  14. I am disappointed with the fall out with the club and green brigade on a few points, main one is my son is one of the 900 that are being banned any matches involving Celtic Fc at Celtic park or any other stadium in Scotland or elsewhere .

I get where the club are coming from, the licence was granted by the council for a safe standing section, initially as a trial, and most home games have seen how marvellous the green brigade have shown the rest of Scottish football that it was a step in the right direction for the fan experience on match day , but the club in my opinion are correct when talking about the flares/smoke things, fans could have got hurt, it could not have been safe under they banners, surely that isn’t why it took years to gain the licence for a section of fans standing safely, the linfield game shuffling might look fun ,but again in my opinion I can see why the club and licence grantors are at odds with it, the police standing in the stairs is another matter , hope the club asks questions to the commander while they carry out their investigation .

What I don’t get is the retribution the club have taken on so many, so harshly, I don’t ever remember my son being sent out any warning letter or code of conduct, I would have thought they would have engaged with the green brigade after the hearts game and laid down the law, if they did then I never heard.

I just feel that both the club and green brigade have created a division not only between themselves, but more importantly the greater Celtic support, I see it on here and other bogs, and that saddens me, I just hope that it can be sorted toot sweet, the team is in good shape, we need to be also for them, and that is important .

  15. Good news about this review of the previous farce.

However its Groundhog Day on CQN.

Celtic, The only club to stand up publicly and call for a review, are vindicated by this decision, do they get any credit? Hell no. The one club with the balls to speak out publicly is accused of running away.

I haven’t a clue why Peter Lawwell is standing down, and neither does anyone else but Celtic, but its obviously a sop to Sevco in keeping with their “old firm” agenda. Sheesh give it 5 mins break.
