Look at me, but not at my face

2751

I don’t get the flares thing. It’s not a part of my going-to-see-Celtic tradition. But if it was my thing, I’d have the courage of my convictions, I wouldn’t hide the fact.

There are consequences of bringing flares to football games, always has been. By not having the courage to openly ignite them, those consequences are not personalised to the individuals who regard this as an integral part of what they do at a football game, they are visited upon everyone in the vicinity, as well as the club.

The problem with flares at Celtic games is those who bring them hide the fact – as they clearly know there are consequences, and presumably aren’t too interested in taking responsibility for them. ‘Keen on flares, not keen enough to stand up for them’, is why the issue persists.

I get the attraction to bright, shiny, things, but this isn’t a campaign to bring the vote to disenfranchised people against a force who will execute the offender on sight. It’s about bringing a flare to a football game. If it’s so important, do it openly. If you think Health and Safety are simply wrong, find the evidence and use it in court. Have the courage to change something.  I know lots of Celtic fans who have had the courage to put their name to something they believed in, in recent years.  It’s seldom easy, but it has been done.

But in the years of this debate no one has ever pointed to evidence that igniting flares in a football ground is a clever thing to do. It’s just a ‘look at me’ exercise, ‘But don’t look at my face’, of course.

Agreed. Seem s to me that many on here have either forgotten or ignored the fact that Celtic were the only Club to make a comment.

Rangers’ EBT ruling will be reviewed by SPFL, says Hibernian chairman Rod Petrie

    By Chris McLaughlin

    BBC Sport

Rangers lost their recent tax case with HMRC

Rangers’ use of a controversial tax scheme will be reviewed by the Scottish Professional Football League, Hibernian chairman Rod Petrie has told the BBC.

It follows a Supreme Court ruling in favour of HM Revenue and Customs over the club’s use of Employee Benefit Trusts between 2001 and 2010.

The SPFL’s new board was meeting on Monday following its annual elections.

But it is unlikely to make a decision about the Supreme Court ruling that deemed the EBT scheme unlawful.

A Scottish Premier League commission into the club’s use of the scheme, headed by Lord Nimmo-Smith, found Rangers to be in breach of player registration rules.

But it resisted calls for Rangers to be stripped of titles won in the period of EBT use.

However, following the Supreme Court ruling, Celtic said they expected the SPFL to review the 2013 decision that their city rivals “did not gain any unfair competitive advantage”.

That judgement was made at a time when the scheme was deemed acceptable by a 2012 tax tribunal.

Peter must a crafty ‘dude’. Rangers Media are absolutely confident that we are being conned. A couple of examples,

“Lawwell’s stepping down from the SPFL board also isn’t coincidence. He’s trying to play with both sides of the bat. (As my blog (Record) you mentioned the other day alluded to) so he can say he had no part in the decision and can appease the moonhowlers in his own support.

1 hour ago, The Dude said:

They have their position set, certain individuals didn’t want to be attached to it being made public (Hi Peter) so they can save face with their own mob.,

Q)Rod Petrie has just said the new board will review Rangers’ use of EBTs.

A)They’ll soon release a statement saying it’s been looked at and they are happy with the action taken previously.

EDIT: Should also add, Petrie isn’t actually on the board.

We’ll see. I do seem to recall reading here that little was to be expected from the SPFL.

Who is to conduct this review and it’s Terms of Reference will be critical. Another sham will not be tolerated.

  5. Surprising announcement from Rod Petrie, but sadly we smell fudge.

We already heard Chairman Milne pronounce his innermost feelings

Add darkest Kilmarnock deepest Motherwell lob in Ann Budge and the review findings are pretty much an open and shut case.

    First small step.

    We keep pushing.

  8. I’d just like to make a simple point regarding the GB. It’s possible to appreciate the colour and atmosphere they add to games at Celtic Park but have an issue with the banner and the statement.

The main purpose of the Green Brigade should be supporting the team on the field and improving the match day experience for all the fans. They have been successful in doing so and they’d be missed if they were gone.

As for the banner: It wasn’t in any ‘ambiguous’ or clever. It was an attempt to wind up the loathsome Linfield fans and it did just that. It didn’t serve any higher political purpose.

It’s easy to be a Castlemilk provo. You didn’t have to live through the troubles like others did but you can bask in the violent history and pretend you are some sort of foot soldier.

There is peace in Northern Ireland now. If you believe in a united Ireland then that can only be achieved via political means. Constantly harping on about past battles isn’t actually an effective thing for the nationalist movement.

The statement was a mudslinging exercise that did nobody any favours. There is a lot at stake in the coming years.

  9. Sevco Media can be as dismissive as they please.

The best hope – the only hope – that they had was that this matter would be interred in a shallow, unmarked grave and that the governing bodies would hope nobody got out the shovels.

It was always going to happen, but they would have bought time.

To have an investigation even look at the issue, impartially, and without fear or favour, can only end in one conclusion. One. And it’s not the one they’ve convinced themselves of.

Petrie announcing this is no coincidence. As guys here have pointed out, he’s not even on the board there. That guy has been at the heart of every reform agenda though and it’s clear that he and Peter Lawwell were able to convince the clubs this needed a proper look.

Lawwell is now on the SFA board. His first recommendation should be that this issue be handled by an agency outside of football, with the ability to set its own frame of reference.

Not to accuse anyone of dishonesty … but to combat the mere appearance of impropriety and interference.

It’s good politics. The logic is unarguable.

And because LNS was such an OBVIOUS whitewash they can’t repeat the trick.

Sevco fans are celebrating way too early for their own good, as usual.

I’m not cracking the champagne corks myself yet, but this is a better day for us than it is for them.

  10. You are all missing the point here, whether or not the ” New Review ” has new terms of reference or not, the huns have already admitted they were due tax for Flo, De Boor and the other bloke from Oz, they admitted their guilt yet nobody even mentions it.

I will wager now that they will find nothing new and they will tell us all to move on.

  15. !!Bada Bing!! on

We have never had support from Scottish clubs or Committees, no change there…

  16. So, the SPFL Board is now made up of:

Rangers*’ Stewart Robertson, Hamilton’s Les Gray, Hearts’ Ann Budge (as the top division’s club reps), plus SPFL chief executive, Neil Doncaster, new/incoming SPFL chairman Murdoch MacLennan and independent non-executive Karyn McCluskey, together with Falkirk’s Martin Ritchie and Morton’s Warren Hawke, (serving the Championship clubs) and Stranraer’s Iain Dougan (representing League One and Two clubs).

How many of that lot do you think are knuckle crunchers … ?

  17. Now that the Linfield ties are over can we expect any clarification from the board and the psni over their respective, at variance statements made in the days preceding the first leg? If there is none forthcoming, how can we know who was telling the truth? We know the SFA SPFL et al are liars, is that the standard then in scottish football or are our board up front and honest with their own fans?

  18. Imatim wants justice and the titles to be stripped from the cheats on

Nothing…….and I mean nothing…..will steel our resolve more to see justice done than another kangaroo court.

A part of me hopes they try it as the backlash will be truly nuclear

  19. Funny.Just came back from hospital after getting the stitches out,and I have 5 messages from Celtic TV,telling me the game is on Wednesday.

Has that made my day,or whit.

  20. My friends in Celtic,

I haven’t been to an away game for a number of years. When I can, I go to the home games and watch away games in Mcchuills.

In that respect I already “boycott ” away games. IMO, the only supporters who should be canvassed is the die hards that attend every game. Their opinions must be paramount in regards to any possible boycott.

    HH.

  21. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

Good that this is happening, although I fear it will be largely symbolic.

Will probably say that they DID gain a competitive advantage, but find some fudge that says the titles will stand.

  22. JPT has confirmed on twitter that those banned from CP who have tickets for Sunderland this Saturday should return their tickets to the TO and get a refund.

So probably hundred of banned supporters who have made travel and accommodation arrangements will now not get in to Stadium of LIght with their tickets. Are the board that stupid to think they’ll all just say ‘fair enough’ and wont travel. They haven’t really thought this through. They’ll buy tickets for Sunderland end, that’ll be interesting!!

  23. returning to matters on the field , anybody any updates on the steve caulker transfer or any transfer for that matter? seems to have gone very quiet.

The new SPFL Board, Karyn McCluskey, would this be the Director of the Violence Reduction Unit?

If so I know her and not a knucklecruncher, rather not go in to it on here but a fair person and someone I suspect that has been co-opted to tackle the issues off field, Spectator related. I also know that she has the ear of another objective person but again not for here.

Some of those affected by the ban were asking for legal advice about the ban and it’s scope on Twitter.

Who knows if the Board have thought this through,

    the ban states…

“you are hereby suspended from attending…

    2) Any football matches involving Celtic FC at any other stadium in Scotland or elsewhere.”

A really poor show when it supposedly about a Safety Cert in Sect 111 and actions allegedly involving a couple of incidents.

Friday’s statement makes it clear that the Sect 111 had been operating well prior to the flares and banners…

“The safe standing area of the stadium had been working very well until the final game of last season against Hearts, when large numbers of flares were smuggled into and set off under banners within the Green Brigade section…”
