Look at me, but not at my face

2751

I don’t get the flares thing. It’s not a part of my going-to-see-Celtic tradition. But if it was my thing, I’d have the courage of my convictions, I wouldn’t hide the fact.

There are consequences of bringing flares to football games, always has been. By not having the courage to openly ignite them, those consequences are not personalised to the individuals who regard this as an integral part of what they do at a football game, they are visited upon everyone in the vicinity, as well as the club.

The problem with flares at Celtic games is those who bring them hide the fact – as they clearly know there are consequences, and presumably aren’t too interested in taking responsibility for them. ‘Keen on flares, not keen enough to stand up for them’, is why the issue persists.

I get the attraction to bright, shiny, things, but this isn’t a campaign to bring the vote to disenfranchised people against a force who will execute the offender on sight. It’s about bringing a flare to a football game. If it’s so important, do it openly. If you think Health and Safety are simply wrong, find the evidence and use it in court. Have the courage to change something.  I know lots of Celtic fans who have had the courage to put their name to something they believed in, in recent years.  It’s seldom easy, but it has been done.

But in the years of this debate no one has ever pointed to evidence that igniting flares in a football ground is a clever thing to do. It’s just a ‘look at me’ exercise, ‘But don’t look at my face’, of course.

I see that we still have the auld malcontents on here doing level 5’s work of splitting the Celtic support and making a big issue out of nothing. Some people would sell their granny for a bit of attention.

So if the plod block the passageways on Wednesday could we be faced with another charge from Uefa or would the fact the GB aren’t there mean they won’t be at that section?

  9. Bumping this up since SPFL AGM today.

Taking the UEFA licence and LNS together where evidence of dishonesty by the natonal association which Celtic are part of exists, I would tell the SFA and SPFL clubs that Celtic could not in all conscience ask their supporters to pay into a game until there was clear evidence that Celtic could present to their support that the causes of dishonesty had been addressed and preventative measures introduced.

I’d give the club’s 5 days to think about it privately then say that Celtic would go public with their reasons and copy to UEFA pointing out which of UEFA 11 Values had been violated.

The other clubs might in those 5 day say Celtic are bluffing and are ultimately powerless, but Celtic can say they will continue but leave it to their supporters to decide which away games the will attend knowing that the dishonesty has not been tackled.

If the evidence is enough to give Celtic that strong a hand, that is how I would play it.

The other clubs might not want to lose Rangers but they will not want to make enemies of Celtic either.

That’s the big stick approach but I’m sure some carrots could be dangled as well like asking UEFA to offset a couple million of CL money in a one off to increase the solidarity payment that benefits all clubs.

If the faith in doing the right thing is there it can move mountains.

    The CSA letter is at

    http://www.thecsa.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=1951&p=6143

I’ll repeat my point from post to Burnley 78.

If Celtic are aware that Rangers lied to obtain the 2011 licence and have sufficient reason to believe SFA complicit in covering the lie which allowed SFS to grant, and if SFA had in 2011 one of the letters that was not disclosed in 2012 by Duff and Phelps, how can Celtic or any club ask supporters to pay into a game which is patently corrupt and is allowing the sources of corruption back into the game?

There are very serious issues of honesty at play here as the CSA have articulated and all supporters are going to have to think very carefully about what they are supporting, not who they are supporting but what.

If the SPFL do not agree to a review Celtic’s next steps will be crucial to them and Scottish football. The regime at Hampden has to go.

What most people seem to forget is that had it not been for Chris Froome, Wiggo would not have won his TdF in the first place.

On the critical day, half way up whatever climb it was, Wiggo was a gonner and had Froome been allowed to, he could have gone on to win the tour that year too.

However, being the good team rider he is, he dropped back to nurse his team leader to victory.

Sadly, I find the tour rather boring these days. The way the Sky team dominate has made it all too predictable. A far cry from the swashbuckling days of Cadel Evans.

    ———————————————–

You make an excellent point. It’s a team game and Froome was indeed integral to Wiggins’ TdF win. I guess the radio discussion was around why, despite his achievements, Froome was rather unrecognised – didn;t even make Sports Personality of the Year list for example. It’s probably just good ole British racism. :-)

Somewhat echoes what the majority of us hailing from the occupied Northern counties have said on here about TGBs display last week.

Honour those who have given their all for Irish Freedom if you will but don’t dilute their sacrifice and the suffering of the people of the North of Ireland with petulant pointless symbols lifted from a sad period in Irish History

  23. TURKEYBHOY on 24TH JULY 2017 1:27 PM

Chill. Celtic typically don’t announce coverage of home games until tickets have sold out. Tickets only went on general sale today, so it may be tomorrow or even Wednesday before it’s announced. If the game is sold out it will likely be on Celtic TV for UK and Overseas. If it doesn’t sell out, it will likely just be on for Overseas. I’m 99.99% sure there will be live coverage of the game.

  24. The GB were in the wrong. Flares and unsafe behaviour and a pointless banner. All wrong.

BUT the criticism by prominent Celtic bloggers has been too much. It is right to point out why certain things were wrong. However the level and tone of criticism needs to be different when dealing with ‘in house’ matters. And I think some of our favourite bloggers (the host of this site excepted) have been unable to find a different tone from the one they use to tear strips off Sevco, media apologists and the SFA.

No Celtic supporter is beyond reproach and it is healthy for us to air differences and hold each other to account. It certainly makes us different from most but there is something everyone in a domestic dispute needs to remember if you want to settle it and remain on good terms – always leave room for the other party to get out of any corner they may have backed themselves in to. Leave their dignity in tact. Give them space to think and reflect.

The GB or some associated with them have made a mistake. If people stop ripping the p£& out of them and give them room to draw back then they will have a chance to sort things out internally.

    Froome .?.

Team Sky have turned things like the Tour into a 2 wheeled version of cattenacio.. A cycle race with next to no racing . An event where settling for a top 10 place is a better bet than going for the win . An event where a Team Sky cyclist gets 1 million euros for pacing Froome up the hills while another Team Sky cyclist gets 750K euros for ensuring that anybody who fancies having a go at Froome has to do it at a faster pace than they would want . . Boring Boring Boring.
