Looking for sharpness and formation variations

436

After a solid, if not unapproachable, home win last week, expectations are high that Celtic will qualify for the next round of the Champions League qualifiers in some comfort tonight.  Beyond the result, the area of most interest is the increase in sharpness, particularly in front of goal.

A week is a long time in preseason.  The players will be rested after the first leg and have had more conditioning sessions before leaving for Iceland.  Pay attention to any changes in formation.  Ronny slipped into a 4-4-2 briefly early in the second half last week.  I expect him to experiment a bit like this tonight.

    THE BIG INTERVIEW. MARK WARBURTON

I am well aware of the size of the task….. I relish the challenge

Now,he is trying to lead Rangers back into the Scottish Premiership for the first time since 2012 when the record 54-time champions were dumped into the Third Division after the original club were liquidated.

Despite the poor English ( were liquidated ) , I love the accuracy!

The template adopted by Ronny has plenty of scope for variatiion already built-in:

    The derided 4-2-3-1 template often becomes 3 2 3 2 and regulary 4 2 4

The ongoing call for 2 up top fails to take account of the reality that in phases of the game we see 3 up top with any number of combinations going on behind that.

It’s almost impossible to define and a helicopter snapshot view at any phase would be interesting.

Ronny encourages lots of rotation in different phases of play and there is more movement now than we have seen in recent seasons.

I feel we sometimes confuse ‘formation’ with the ability of players selected to cope with what they are being asked ro do.

The most valid criticism of Ronny last season was asking players to do things they were incapable of.

The best managers learn not to ask for the impossible.

The test of what he has learned will be in the next two rounds.

    Not tonight!

    Remember to bet sensibly..:-)

  11. Ho hooo, just watched a ‘succulent lamb’ interview by Jim Whyte with G&S in South Affrika, as the white Afrikaners call it! First thing, Jim actually still had a bit of shite on his nose at the end of the ‘chat’! Anyway, the gist of the interview was this cracker from G&S “Rangers will never become the biggest club in Scotland until the supporters stop their boycott of merchandise, n start to outspend the Celtic supporters!!!” Wow, he has realised that the ‘peepil’ not buying Mr. Ashley’s strips is actually costing Rangers money! Lol! Not he has decided to come out with this bombshell when he is in SA, n not in Govan! The other two proclamations were quite funny; he is going to meet with Sports Direct officials to try n get a better deal for Rangers! Hahahahaha! N he still doesnt regret losing £20m to David Murray’s Rangers! In that case, why keep going on about if FFS lol! So, no questions then about Nomad’s, Auditors, or when he might actually put some money in himself (this time!) No, dont be silly! One question comes to mind though; why would Sky Sports, a multi billion pound, global sports organisation, send a senior reporter thousands of miles around the globe, at great expense, to interview the chairman of a Scottish CHAMPIONSHIP club with a three year history! Im afraid the tentacles of the deceased Rangers Football Club still manage to extend into areas of football administration!

  12. That Jim White interview, 6mins at the top of the hour, another 2mins at half past.

Every hour. At least during White’s shift.

You can’t buy that kind of publicity.

Thankfully though it was 50% lies, 50% glib and 100% shameless. And that includes the interviewers questions.

    Borderline criminal journalism.

An away goal tonight and they will need to score 4 to beat us and that’s not going to happen.

We can compete with their big forwards with a big back 4 and the front 4 presumably are those that feel most comfortable on the playing surface tonight.
