Lots to do before September

186

After two significant departures in the form of Aaron Mooy and Jota, Celtic’s incoming transfers rose to four yesterday with confirmation of five-year deals for Koreans Kwon Hyeok-kyu (22) and Yang Hyun-jun (21).  Marco Tilio (21) and Odin Thiago Holm (20) arrived earlier this month.  German-born Polish defender Maik Nawrocki (22) is in town and will hopefully be confirmed soon.

That’s two nailed-on starters out the door and soon-to-be five players whom none of us can vouch for in.  Anyone outside of Celtic who tells you we are either stronger or weaker than last season is betraying their secret desires.  Those involved in the transfer decision making process will have at least a modicum of doubt.  Most of us just trust the process and hope.

The most I’ll say is that we are in good shape for next month’s home games against Ross County and St Johnstone and the trip to Aberdeen.  September brings three away games and our first Champions League group stage match.  We have a lot of work to do between now and then, not necessarily in the transfer market.  All of the new arrivals have a significant amount of settling into Celtic to get through between now and then.

    On the transfer front

I think Paul67 is spot on with our position

    2 gone 5 unknown

Although after the last couple of windows I feel a bit more excited about the unknowns

Having said that I just sense there is one or two more ‘established proven quality” to come in

I don’t think our board and Brendan announced a charge into Europe on the hope of a few unknowns

    BTW

The most outrageous piece of reporting that I can remember is Starfelt is wanted by Spartak Moscow – who in their right mind is going to go and play in Moscow FFS

The most sensible piece of reporting I can remember is on here (can’t remember who) saying Starfelt may go to Portugal (have you seen Jacynta)

    All the best Osaze Urhoghide.

The young man came in, had a go and didn’t do anything wrong.

Just didn’t work out for him.

I hope he has a fulfilling career.

  5. Went to see Oppenheimer last night and I found it much better than I had expected given Christopher Nolan’s propensity to tear the arse out of things.

    Some caveats –

It glosses over the huge damage in Japan.

Nolan has previous for muffling dialogue with background noise.

It is quite long at 3 hours.

You would need to read up a little about his story especially post WW 2.

And get back up to speed with that Theoretical Physics dissertation you did many years ago :-)

The match also marks the beginning of a new season under Brendan Rodgers, who’ll be hoping to build on the success of last season.

Meanwhile County will bring 3 bus loads, and there will be about 800 empty seats in their corner and with segregation.

SS- agree, particularly with allocations being cut at certain grounds, only issue will be segregation

  8. If there is a waiting list ,then why is a billionaire like Dermot Desmond not addressing it ,he could have plenty of change back if he upgraded the 2 ends of the main stand ,then upgrade the main stand were the old press box and the tv gantry ,why doesn’t he do it ?.

Those Ross County tickets have been on general sale for a few weeks. They didn’t suddenly go on sale today following the club announcement, which was merely a reminder that there were still tickets available.

You say ‘Joseph Public has no chance ever again of attending Celtic Park’. Celtic currently have 54,000+ ST holders. So who bought the 5,000+ general sale tickets if not joseph Public Celtic supporters?

  10. Tom I have been on the ticket site every few days. I did not see county tickets on general sale.

I get regular bulletins for woman’s games. The testimonial wolves in Dublin. I got nothing for county .

  11. And as if by magic as I type I get an email with pat Bonner reminder to get tickets for the Bilbao game

    SAINT STIVS on 25TH JULY 2023 4:03 PM….

Spot on. I have been on that site multiple times a day. They had no tickets available since I started looking (a couple of weeks ago). There may have been some hospitality ones, as a friend grabbed a couple yesterday.

I doubt very much that there were ‘4,000’ tickets available at any time. Celtic seem to prefer selling extra tickets to ST holders, rather than to those who need them.

I mean, what’s the point of me coming all the way from Canada? Family? Friends? Weather? Nope….

My son bought 2 tickets for Ross County game for him and his son soon after fixtures were released. He’s not a ST holder.

However, I’ve just been told that the tickets that went on sale today were as a result of Ross County returning part of their allocation, so on that basis I owe you an apology.

At least we know that when that happens, the unsold tickets are made available to Celtic supporters.

  14. Timbhoy

There needs to be an assurance of long term demand before any additional expense could be undertaken to increase capacity. Keeping demand ahead of supply is how it has worked really well for the club this past 30 years since Fergus rode into town.

The work to upgrade the corners / main stand would be astronomical in price. My understanding is that it is not just a question of adding another tier to the stand. The foundations and base structure would need to also be addressed.

The short term limitations for the 7000 current fans in that old main stand would be significant also if construction started. It may mean 2 years in another part of the stadium for perhaps only 50% of the matches. Similar issues for the corporate guests who do provide a lot of revenue.

It’s not as simple as you suggest.

As for Dermott personally funding this. I doubt the other shareholders of the club would allow a separate venture to break the club up in that way. It would limit Celtic’s long term revenue potential, there would be little benefit to the club. I am sure it would be almost impossible to provide a workable business model to break out revenue from a new main stand from the rest of the business to allow him to do this even if he wanted to. Unless he leased it back to the club and took a rent that way….. but he doesn’t own the land anyway so even that might be tricky.

  15. St Stivs / Tom Mc

I think that tickets do get offered to corporate and premium ticket holders and then possibly existing ticket holders first.

It is harder to get tickets for ordinary fans. That is for sure. Great if Ross Co have returned some. That’s good news.

I do really hope those who don’t regularly get along so snap up tickets for Bilbao. I am genuinely surprised to see Rangers sell out 2 friendlies and sell well on another pre season when their loyal have 2 further qualifiers to pay for also…..yet we appear to have limited interest in seeing our new team and manager after winning a treble last season. Even more damning that we are not even interested in supporting the charities espoused by James F in his testimonial season.

  16. If you bring in 8 get 4 quality regular first team players, 2 others OK but not brilliant and 2 flops that is as much as you can expect.

We have 4 in, soon to be 5,

From video clips the Korean Bhoy Kwon grabbed my attention, our esteemed Polish friend MR.Z says we have a right good one in Nawrocki .

Our scouting Department has improved, the hit ratio in last 2 years has been impressive, would still like a marquee signing but overall I think we will be pleasantly surprised when the real Football kicks off.

  17. Dilly Dally is the best signing so far for Celtic – plenty of players with potential and promise. I find that intriguing and concerning ……….so far.

Rangers mean business, their signings have been good under Beale and the additions add physicality and experience from European leagues. They have a spine and plenty pace and cover. Including Dilly Dalio

Sure, we will see how they gel but I get the feeling we have a serious challenge to retain Scottish dominance, let alone impact champs league.

They have a major financial problem if they dont qual for champs league – we on the other hand have spectacular financial advantage.

NOW LETS SHOW IT! by signing players of experience and calibre.

  18. garygillespieshamstring on

While seats are at a premium, we can sell over 50000 season tickets as it is the only way to be sure of seeing the bigger games.

An increase in capacity reduces the need to buy a season ticket as you can then buy on a game by game basis. This might well lead us back to the days of 25-30 thousand regular attendees.

  19. !!Bada Bing!! on

Stadium capacity is fine, we’re Ronny Deila away from closing the top tier…..

  20. I have my tickets for next Tuesday, it’s one of the few occasions I can take my son to a game but can see why others wouldn’t choose to go, it will be tight enough for me as I’m in the office but wee guy doesn’t get many chances.

B78, I hear that there were 8,000 Newcastle fans at the game against Sevco not that I’m particularly bothered if they win the most supporters to a testimonial cup 😀

  21. Anyways.

I confess I gave up my season book. I was struggling in particular with the walk from the car in the forge Tesco car park. Being over taken by older fellas on the way knees sore knackered I often got in late. Winter games were killing seriously sore in the old wounds.

I got offers from csc around here but I know I will end up bevvied.

    Regrets now with season pending.

I can’t even get on the waiting list yet.

I will live off the scraps from family and friends.

As well as financial impact if the Hun fail to qualify for the Cl , is that they will be playing catch-up on league business on Sundays which they regularly bottled last season

  24. For the love of Jaysus, install a ticket exchange scheme and crack the next level of demand that way.

No idea what’s holding that up.

Quite literally fill the ground up every week, let ST holders get some money back, let day trippers sit in different parts of the ground instead of stuck beside angry Billy from Dundee all the time in the away end. The club gets a chance of having more folk buying from the amenities.

“Rangers mean business, their signings have been good under Beale”

Respectfully – what’s the factual or evidential basis for this statement?

Sevco may very well be improved from last season. Time will tell.

But right now? any belief of the above is based on the usual hopeful tripe spouted copiously this time of year.

Genuine question : two teams competed for trophies last year.

    One team swept the board.

    The other swept the floor.

During the summer each team acquired four players no one had ever heard of beforehand.

    Q. Who is stronger?

  26. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Just scanned Fabrizio Romano’s Twitter page.

£50m is the now the going rate for “decent but still a punt”.

    World gone mad.

Against that backdrop, pretty remarkable we can still land credible talent.

  27. A reminder that the league starts in a week and a half !

Enough to beat RC well but our first 11 will likely be a pretty weakened version of last season’s team.

Not panicking but pull yer finger out csc

  28. Beale’s signings cannot be judged as successful or not successful until we see them play.

He arrived as manager in Nov. 22 and in his first signing window brought in Cantrell and Raskin (2 successes) and later an Australian – Williamson from Alloa (who knows?- now on loan at Thistle)

In this window he has brought in

Jack Butland- GK- free Man U- 30 yr old

Dujon Sterling- RB- free Chelsea- 23

    Leon Balogun- CB- free QPR-35

    Kieran Dowell- AM- free Norwich-25

Abdallah Sima- RW – Brighton- loan- 22

Cyrill Dessers- CF- Cremonese- £5m- 28

Sam Lammers- CF- Atalanta- £3.5m- 26

He is additionally in for Cifuentes from LA Galaxy- DM 24 and Danilo CF -24 from Feyenoord.

I am neither gonna write them up or do them down until I see them play in Scotland. Cifuentes is the only one I have seen enough of and he seems a good solid player to me, one I’d be happy to see Celtic buy.

But they’ve lost Colak, Arfield, Kent, Morelos, Tillman, McGregor and Helander, who were all at times first team regulars.

The core of what we have retained is stronger than the core of what they have retained. The question mark is over recruitment.

Are our recruits. Tilio, Yang, Holm, Kwok, and Nawrocki plus the now-signed Iwata (and others to come?) better than the Sevco list above?

You can fear they are or dismiss them over-confidently but no-one really knows. Certainly, before a competitive ball is kicked, there are no grounds for either fear or over-confidence. Rebuilds are difficult for both teams but they have more to rebuild than we have and they have to do it on the back of a whitewash losing season in all competitions.

I will keep my faith in the process

  29. I’m expecting the following for next season

    – A more structured team set-up

    – Full backs sticking broadly to their position , no drifting into midfield

    – ball played out from the centre of defence with one CF stepping out

    – Iwata to be holding player

    – Calum pushed on

    – Reo to be switched to right side midfield

    – Forwards rotated but we’ll stick with 2 wingers

We should be able to pass our way through teams without having to run about mental the whole game , I’m expecting that we will have too much for the Hun again
