Magic money, Longmuir, Ahmad

BDO’s survey of British football clubs suggests control, if not complete sanity, has descended on Scottish football.  Most Premiership clubs surveyed predicted they would return to profitability over the next year.

On the back of Phil Mac Giolla Bhain’s article on former Scottish Football League chief exec David Longmuir’s bonuses, which are no longer payable, these are heady days for some clubs who have lived hand-to-mouth stuffing pork into Longmuir’s trough.  You better believe it’s financial Armageddon, for the former SFL man. The SFA will surely insist on inappropriate financial stain is left on our game.

Anyway………. It seems if I explain the structural gap between Rangers International’s earnings through season ticket sales and the costs of operating a football club which can facilitate circa 40,000 spectators on a regular basis, we can all figure why the gap cannot be bridged.  We are different because despite having enormously higher football costs, we can access enormously higher revenue streams.

On the other hand, explaining that Celtic’s operational costs need to be augmented by player sales and/or Champions League income, just to break even, and that player sales and/or Champions League income cannot exclusively be used for player purchases, amounts to a heresy against deeply held orthodox views.

Add in a reminder about the strategy which has made all the difference to Celtic – buying wisely, selling wisely, and sit back to watch a secular belief structure ignore the ‘every penny to be spent’ prediction and vent as though their deity has just been denied.

This stuff’s complicated, apparently, but paying attention to financial detail is not a required Obligation to support Celtic, so if it doesn’t float your boat, I’d start by demanding to know where all the Seville money went to….

I hear the Daily Record accompanied their – Imran Ahmad to sue Rangers International for £3.4m – story with a completely baseless story about Celtic losing out on the only transfer target they know about.  They were wrong on some of the Ahmad story (Charles Green may have produced the documents Ahmad would rely on in court, but suggestions they are in concert on this claim are wildly inappropriate).  Still, it plays into current orthodoxy on Charles Green.

Going on what they’ve written, they know nothing about Celtic’s transfer negotiations either.  Absolutely squat.  Percentage of Celtic fans who know the media’s game: 100%.  Percentage of Celtic fans who allow themselves to be influenced despite knowing the above……?

If these people have you panicking, look elsewhere for sympathy.  We have a team building strategy, it has delivered well thus far and it will continue to do so.  Buy wisely, sell wisely, spend every penny over a given business cycle.  Pretty straightforward, really.

Given that the economy has been in the doldrums since 2008, (Hourly earnings down by 5.5% since 2010) we have done well to be where we are today. The Board deserve some credit for that but far more than with comparable clubs ( Nonpareil I hear you say), we depend on the direct input of our supporters. Rangers as was were subsidised, during the Murray years to the tune, (in total) of £250 million and yet we still came out on top and they were liquidated, or to be more accurate are in the process of being liquidated by BDO. Absent that competition we really need to entertain, and in football that usually involves scoring goals and if Neil Lennon believes that we are still short in that department, then it is the Boards’ job to resolve that problem. Finnbogasson could be that man, his club are desperate to sell him, ergo we should not appear desperate to buy him. Still hope we get him though.

  2. How easily myths are created.

    The spine of our team?

    Geezabreak.

If Kevin Wilson is not replaceable by any other existing player who can play central defense Lutzig, Mulgrew, Ambrose, The Dutch lad Van wossname, or Molyouko (sp) some folk know sfa about football.

Then there is the goalie. Oh haud oan he has not left.

That leaves Hooper whom many accused of switching off from January.

A spine gives you backbone, strength. One replacement for Hooper, whom we are obviously looking for fixes that and has us no worse and probably better than last season.

Now had we sold a Big Billy class of CB I’d buy the spine myth, but Wilson?

    As I said geezeabrek.

Excuse my err, lack of understanding.

Did we not sign Balde as a striker albeit from the second tier in Portugal?

Also, did we not sign Hooper from the lower echelons of the English leagues?

    There is a parallel.

Anyway i hope the big guy scores 50 goals and all you doubting Thomas’s get yer apologies typed up and posted.

HAIL HAIL THE CELTS ARE HERE!!!!!!!!………well, some of them are!!!!

  4. Honestly there are some in here just waiting like hooded craws for us to fall flat on our face to say I told you this would happen, does my nut in, can you not at least wish the team one little bit of well done, we go with what we have and that is it, no this no that, what we have is what we have, no speculating we should have done this, done that, where we are at is trying to win our way into the CL proper, I honestly hope and pray that none of the Celtic Squad come in here because it is becoming a joke, I will get the usual answers well if you don’t like it go away, why should I go away when I talk positive about my team, time the Hun lurkers where weeded out of here.

Quite difficult to gauge just how good bad or indifferent Shaktar will be. The best “form” line I can offer is through St Johnstone!

We all know Shaktar disposed of Bate in the previous round. I was trying to establish if Bate were the same side as the were in the past few seasons, and I noted that in July, they won 1 -0 away at Minsk, who of course went on to beat the Saints on spot kicks in the last round of the EL.

So in a nutshell, that is probably about their level, similar to that of St Johnstone.

  6. Summa of Sammi….

Totally agree. You can’t always directly replace a player. With the signing of Boerigter I think we might be playing a different style this season.

  8. Now that West Brom have signed Vydra to go with earlier summer signing Anelka, and given they already have Odemwingie and Rosenborg, what chance Lenny will try to sign Shane Long. He tried two summers ago and the player now only has 1 year to go on his contract. Better option than Kevin Doyle if we are looking for a hard working lone striker/targetman type.

  9. Starry

The ball was in our court, the players were contracted to Celtic. If you can’t get in the players to replace those leaving then don’t let them leave until you do.

For the record, I think the Board are doing a cracking (although not faultless) job of running the Club in the circumstances in which we operate.

Remember, these are the guys who brought us Wanyama and Hooper in the first place.

Of more immediate concern to is that a way can be found to resolve the Green Brigade stuation.I’ve just reolcated to 112 and was looking forward to seeing them at close quarters all season.

  13. one thing we can all agree- the SPFL is one of the worst leagues in Europe run by amateurs with minimal media exposure which is inherently biased against you, tiny attendances at poor stadia, desperate quality of football in a country that rains incessantly, playing for a club where the manager needs 24/7 security protection from head cases, the same nutters that could make life miserable for your wife and family, at the same time getting half the money that could be earned in one of Europe’s elite leagues.

Oh and you might get Champions League football where you will be pot 4 cannon fodder.

So what makes this package so attractive to European footballs big names??

  14. Happy with our additions and looking for a new striker….that would do me…..if we had signed Russell, I would have been reasonably happy…..the good point made earlier, that if we sign a striker for £4-5m we are no worse off than had Hooper stayed.

Our opponents are no mugs and will be difficult to beat over two legs….the first game is on a synthetic surface….so lets treat them as we would a bigger name….with our fitness and game time progressing I expect us to qualify but I would be happier with a striker for the home tie.

Given our league record against St Johnstone last season was won 1, lost 1 & drew 2, doesn’t fill me with confidence given we are currently a weaker team than we were last season.

Spot on. We are on the verge of qualifying for the CL group stage for a second consecutive season. Pretty sure we have never done that before. Why all the doom and gloom?

  18. twists n turns on

….however, Hun posters, pretending to be tims, they are a different story. Normally they out themselves …..by constantly referring to “huns”.

    Hmmm…maybe I better be careful…..

  19. Buying players especially Quality international players with good stats early in the transfer window is difficult, clubs play the waiting game hoping for competing clubs to enter a bidding war to get maximum price, with 20 days to go in the transfer window, it is still to early to judge

However i do agree we are light in the striker department at C/L level with Sammi being our only one genuine option at that level, Stokes is out of his depth at C/L and Balde has no great C/L experience and is a long term project, i do agree we could do with a quality striker sooner rather than later, no idea if Alfreð Finnbogason is the guy we need, havent seen him play, i do believe Neil, PL and JP work closely together and are at present doing their best to secure signing targets, admittedly it will be within budget restraints, Liverpool had some very expensive recruits on display in Dublin just as well their shooting ability did not match the price tags, money doesn’t always translate to goals

Not concerned at all ref Wilson leaving vastly overrated IMO and if we got 2.5 mill, we did spectacular business there, well done Celtic, If Mulgrew, Ambrose, Lustig, Virgil van Dijk and Mouyokolo being 4 C/B’s at the club are not good enough, why have we signed the 2 new C/B’s, i will wait and see how the new recruits settle in

Midfield for me is a concern, Wanyama was a great find, despite David shiels brents opinions, IMO we undersold our best asset early in the window, we didn’t need the cash surely, why sell early? would love to see some talented midfielders in the Mcstay, Collins, Naka and Lubo mould, more quality if possible

Very unhappy with the club’s handling of the GB situation and TBH do not trust PL and the board in relation to the whole GB saga, get it sorted ASAP get these guys back where they belong

C/L is a must all details of the up and coming tie must not be overlooked, 100% of the clubs resources used to get us into the C/L group stages, not interested in the Aberdeen game and the development/20’s squad should play, very confident we will win the league comfortably, will be good for the league if the Dons have an early lead

I’m not usually a moaner on here but I’m becoming increasingly frustrated at our lack of planning.

I am now scared to pick up a newspaper every morning to read the latest revelation. I am not the most intelligent person in the world (not that your surprised) I backed Green from day one – I thought he was the saviour and could do no wrong. I gave him my money. I don’t understand business as I am not business minded. I am just a guy who supports his team. But I was thinking, that maybe I deserve to feel like this? Am I that naïve that I didn’t see this coming?? I knew nothing about Green but yet I backed him to the hilt? It’s left me feeling silly and you know what? I done the same with Whyte? I believed the Billionaire tripe and bought into it. Been trying to analyse this situation all morning. It’s a salesmans Job to sell you a Lie. They have every right. I think a detailed analysis of the accounts are required… maybe this isn’t possible until the most recent accounts are released.

I think what people have a problem with is being told we were working to a Europa League budget. e.g. Europa League participation would allow us to break even without transfers and now we’re being told Champions League runs are needed. That’s a sorry state to be in if true.
