Magic money, Longmuir, Ahmad

BDO’s survey of British football clubs suggests control, if not complete sanity, has descended on Scottish football.  Most Premiership clubs surveyed predicted they would return to profitability over the next year.

On the back of Phil Mac Giolla Bhain’s article on former Scottish Football League chief exec David Longmuir’s bonuses, which are no longer payable, these are heady days for some clubs who have lived hand-to-mouth stuffing pork into Longmuir’s trough.  You better believe it’s financial Armageddon, for the former SFL man. The SFA will surely insist on inappropriate financial stain is left on our game.

Anyway………. It seems if I explain the structural gap between Rangers International’s earnings through season ticket sales and the costs of operating a football club which can facilitate circa 40,000 spectators on a regular basis, we can all figure why the gap cannot be bridged.  We are different because despite having enormously higher football costs, we can access enormously higher revenue streams.

On the other hand, explaining that Celtic’s operational costs need to be augmented by player sales and/or Champions League income, just to break even, and that player sales and/or Champions League income cannot exclusively be used for player purchases, amounts to a heresy against deeply held orthodox views.

Add in a reminder about the strategy which has made all the difference to Celtic – buying wisely, selling wisely, and sit back to watch a secular belief structure ignore the ‘every penny to be spent’ prediction and vent as though their deity has just been denied.

This stuff’s complicated, apparently, but paying attention to financial detail is not a required Obligation to support Celtic, so if it doesn’t float your boat, I’d start by demanding to know where all the Seville money went to….

I hear the Daily Record accompanied their – Imran Ahmad to sue Rangers International for £3.4m – story with a completely baseless story about Celtic losing out on the only transfer target they know about.  They were wrong on some of the Ahmad story (Charles Green may have produced the documents Ahmad would rely on in court, but suggestions they are in concert on this claim are wildly inappropriate).  Still, it plays into current orthodoxy on Charles Green.

Going on what they’ve written, they know nothing about Celtic’s transfer negotiations either.  Absolutely squat.  Percentage of Celtic fans who know the media’s game: 100%.  Percentage of Celtic fans who allow themselves to be influenced despite knowing the above……?

If these people have you panicking, look elsewhere for sympathy.  We have a team building strategy, it has delivered well thus far and it will continue to do so.  Buy wisely, sell wisely, spend every penny over a given business cycle.  Pretty straightforward, really.

  1. time for change on

Maybe it’s me but even if we had been successful in getting Finboggson in last nif=ght would we have had time to get all the requisite visa paperwork completed in order for him to sit on the bench. I think Shakthar would have been a game too soon. If we can sign a player before the squad deadline good.

If sources are true Heerenverren (spelling sorry)bought him last year for 300,000 and now want 5m+ that’s a mark up payday lenders get a bad name for…. it’s not easy to negotiate player purchases and in the emotional frenzy that follows the transfer windows it’s some evidence why fans should not be taking all the decisions.

The story about the Dortmund defenders fall from grace in the eyes of his fans should be a stark reminder to what can be done to those who represent our dreams….supporters?

I’m old enough to have seen good, bad and ever worse times at Celtic Park so I’m enjoying the good times now. I’ve been cheated during the bad times and despite this my team is prospering the ones who cheated have died once and their spawn are fast spirraling in the same direction.

I think that we will be one of the main beneficiaries of the Fair Play Rules indeed one team in Russsia has put all their players up for sale to meet these rules, more will follow.

Keep up the good work Paul and roll on both Saturday and next Tuesday (touch wood for no new injuries midweek). Any more news on Joe Ledley (appendix?)

Everyone is entitled to there opinion, and I never got personnel with any one, if people take it personnel that’s nothing to do with me, I NEVER mentioned one name in my posts, just my opinion, nothing personnel, if I think there are Huns in here I am saying it, if that is not on in here then I will back off, but I am sure I have seen it many times, so if that is why you are saying I am getting personnel , then someone had better prove I got personnel seems silly actually, any way HO HUM…..NOT HUN…HUM.

Amongst all the “what if we don’t qualify for the CL” and there are many on here, how about this.

What if we qualify, win our section then go on to win the trophy!

What if we win the treble here as well!

What if the mankies mark2 go bust again!

What if bid Balde scores 40 goals!

What if……………………….ach I could go on.

At least I’m thinking in a positive kind of way.

  5. Bill McMurdo explains that Ahmad’s legal action is a matter of principle and states:

“However, he [Ahmad] has vowed that, whether the matter goes to court or whether there is an out of court settlement, he will plough whatever he gets back into the club.”

  6. What is the Stars

In all honesty I think the suits are doing a bloody good job re the finances, considering the league we are in, the lack of TV money etc, they have got us to a place where we are well punching above our weight.

Now I would have thought that the suits want to keep us there, keep the CL money pouring in, expose us to a world wide TV audience, they would not be doing their jobs if they didn’t.

And yet they are taking a massive gamble with that, a gamble that they IMO shouldn’t be taking, if it pays off, they will be heroes, I dread to think what it will be like if it fails.

We have the cash, we have had plenty of time to source replacements.

Just to correct one aspect of your post, please…….the last share issue was guaranteed by DD to the tune of £15m (for Lennoxtown etc) ……the Celtic fans came up with £11m, so DD only had to contribute £4m…….BUT…….. If the Celtic fans hadn’t bought the shares, DD would have had to pay £15m …… Just one example of where he has contributed…. HH

  8. Replacement for Hooper………..Was that not Balde (he was awesome on Saturday against quality) ? Derk is also a cracking looking addition.

Replacement for Wilson………..We have one but he’s broken at the moment

I think we have more than enough (over 2 games) to deal with qualifying, we then can offer CL football as a carrot.

We need to be bringing through our own too, we have a good pool of talent trying to make the grade.

The Dublin match was so incredibly uplifting to see these kids play with a gallus swagger when they could.

I love to see us signing talent but get more, or at least as much, pleasure watching our own break through

  9. tonydonnelly67

you have to do better than that…name names….who are these huns?

  10. Surely the signing options once qualified for the CL will offer greater choice and hopefully value. Not sure if the play-off tie we have (albeit easy) would be seen as attractive to potential signings.

Always a risk, but ending up with players who wont cut it once we get to the CL isn’t going to please anyone. A risk worth taking i think.

In terms of players gelling – we have the SPL or whatever its called for that.

  11. The 21-year-old Czech international who scored 20 goals at Watford (Championship) last season on loan from Udinese has now joined West Brom on a one-year loan.

Sounds like his profile would have fit us.

  14. So the world is, or at least certain Celtic blogs are ,according to some full of Celtic supporting moaning faced eejits who can’t or won’t comprehend simple economics. Well I disagree personally i find there are equal numbers of forelock tugging PLC supporting sycophantic Celtic supporters as those who enjoy a wee moan at our signing policy.

For those who continually ask ‘where did all the Seville money go/’, I can put them out of their misery. I have it on good authority from someone who knows and someone I trust, that the Seville money went to the players and that there was no profit to ‘the club’.

    Modern Diddly Squat is rubbish.

Disagree in the strongest possible terms! Diddly (as I’m sure you must already know!!!!) was a genius who, despite having only 3 digits, could finger some hairy passages. Without the bionic advantages of guys like Oscar Pistorius both he and Brother Bru-Bru revolutionized guitar playing. Bru was (as I’m sure you must already know!!!!) the Tambourine Man referred in Bob Dyl’s song and provided the picked guitar on Don’t Think Twice.

    Hi Ghuys, Salve salve ;-

Watched some of the Liverpool game and whilst the result was indeed pleasing, I think optimism has clouded some posters judgement. We do indeed have some young players with great potential but there is no doubt in my mind Liverpool players were better at holding, receiving and passing the ball. This demonstrates to me that our coaching is really no very good. As for Amido Balde playing against Shacktar , really I mean really?.

I keep hoping that our manager will have an epiphany and decide to play young Tony Watt in his proper position ie through the middle as by doing this, the midfielders and wide players would be able to put the ball in the box in the secure knowledge that someone will be making runs there. Hope it all ends well.

PS Paulus LXVII whilst I found your article yesterday to be most illuminating and in no way trying to disparage your views, it would not surprise me in the least that if Dermott was trying to sell us then an entirely different and more optimistic accounting would find its way into the public domain.

A guy on KDS has had us linked with him from about a month ago. Looks a good player, tall, can tackle and a good passer (something we desperately need).
