Maley, Stein, McNeill, O’Neill, Strachan and now Lennon

913

Good afternoon, champions!  If you enjoy your history……….

Yesterday, Celtic retained the league title, which has been a rare achievement for much of our history.  We won six in a row during the first decade of the 20th century, then won four in a row (1914-17) during the Great War, but it would be another 50 years before Celtic retained the league title, on 6th May 1967.

Jock Stein re-wrote all the rules during his nine in a row era but after that ended in 1974,  Billy McNeill retained the tile in 1982 and it would be another 20 years before Martin O’Neill retained it, the only time he did so.

Gordon Strachan then set about writing his own chapter in our history, retaining the league in 2007 and 2008, while becoming only the third manager in our history, after Willie Maley and Stein, to win three in a row (history awaits you, Neil).

Neil Lennon now joins a select band of Celtic managers, Maley, Stein, McNeill, O’Neill and Strachan, who have retained the league title.

In total Celtic have retained the league title 22 times but yesterday was only the fourth time since nine in a row.  It was the sixth time in total we have won two in a row.

Remarkably, of the 13 times Celtic have retained the league since 1919, this is only the third time it has been achieved at Celtic Park, the other occasions being when we beat St Mirren in 1982 (remember unwelcome half time news from Pittodrie over the PA?), and Livingston, to win the 2002 title.  Lazy journalism prevents me from confirming which of the pre-1920 titles were won at Celtic Park.

This is your history, I hope you enjoy the memories as much as I do.

The Andrea Kearney Fund, which supports women diagnosed with cancer during pregnancy, is holding its annual dinner at the Radisson Hotel in Glasgow on Saturday 1 June.  The event is excellent value with a cracking line up of entertainment, including Ricky Ross, Michelle McManus and Lou Hickey.  The fight against this disease goes on….

You can book a table here.  Look forward to seeing you at the dinner.

Enjoying the incredulous Sevco 5088 events, more on that later.

  1. Evening all,

Not posted for a while but based on the aggro I can see tonight, thought I should add my tuppence worth.

Belated hello to Oldtim and SFTB who I met back in Feb before the Hearts game – cracking fellows both.

Hello to Jimbo67 and his pal who I met in Failte after the Cup Semi, again cracking fellows.

I am in a bit of a quandary as to how I address the latest rammy on here.

I don’t believe in a set of Celtic fan values and have fallen out quick viciously with people who think I should have such a robotic intellect on here in the past(my dislike of Irish terrorists being quite controversial)

At least my views are based on the subject at hand each time.

Bringing prejudice into play at every opportunity is, however, a low skill, easily spotted.

Kojo and Singing Det have made no secret of their monetarist, Christian supremacist views in the past so I don’t think they should be hounded out if the owner of the site allows it.

I have been a paid up member of the British and Irish branches on the Labour Party for many years so clearly disagree with most of what they say but by definition support their right to say it.

There is no standard Celtic View so let us all make our views known.

People talk politics all day long on here these days to a level of boring I did not believe possible.

This is a Celtic site so my view is, keep politics and support/hatred of terrorists out of it.

PS terrrorists killed one of mine but I treat all terrorists the same, hence my dislike of the Irish type now that I live there.

PPS if it does come to a scrap(doubt it) I’m on SFTB side and so is ma Da!

    Hail hail

  2. Mahe the Madman on

Doesnt matter who you are or where you live, if your political views upset the blog and you consistently post them then you just want your name mentioned and/or to be a stirrer. If they had any respect for the family that inhabits this blog then they would cease posting politics.

Kojo and TSD could both of you please keep your politics for another place? If you had any decency you both would.

  3. Not a good night.

  4. In my VERY early years, 50s, I lived in a predominantly staunchly Protestant village in North Lanarkshire. There are more than a few.

During the long summer evenings we would occasionally have a stone fight, an ecumenical division with the Progress Drive boys lined up against the guys from Hill Street and Mill Street.

When I say lined up we were close enough to exchange threats and insults but not so close that we could be hit by the thrown stones.

Seems like you guys tonight have brought those memories flooding back.

  9. The Singing Detective (Dennis Potter), Potty Mouth, has a history of being consistently like his favorite author, Pinteresque… Which means to be confrontational/aggressive in style.

It is however not simply a literary device he/she is paying tribute to, it could be also, possibly, be a simple algorithm …

They are everywhere in this Information Age (@Daniel Bell) where people think a human individual constructs, when it is simply a program…

People were outraged by Amazons T-Shirt stating Keep Calm and Carry on Raping. It was produced by a computer program. An Algorithm that forgot to omit such an offensive verb from its list of verbs.

They are all around us… Everywhere.

Stock exchange, banking, advertising, TV, algorithms shape our world..

Not being paranoid by the way. Just amazed at the speed of change in the world, and the extent to which people cannot keep up.

Early night as usual means waking up at the crack of dawn…. ; (

A quick lurk back ( not lurpack) scunners me. Ive previously commented on the source of so much aggro in cqn and how it pees me off that a very good celt and intelligent gentleman gets dragged into the mire with the muppets he argues with.

In the next month I plan on meeting up with that gentleman and many other fine cqnrs again …. paul 67 too. At that point I am gonna have a serious word with our host – continuous improvement is a must in any walk of life – this great site has lost its mojo and hopefully mr 67 listens to his flock here.

Failure to react to the voices of reason will result in further losses of good guys and allow the bigots and racists to win. That … would be a great shame and a sad demise for this site.

  16. KOKO & TSD

Can you please explain why both of you cannot use the same line spacing as most other posters on CQN?

Is it an ego thing like that failed journalist on Leggoland who puts everything he spouts in BOLD to make it seem important.

Only asking like as I don’t read your posts because of the layout

  17. Murdochbhoy, yermanfromMK on

    Good morning CQNers,

I couldn’t sleep so I thought I’d catch up on CQN as I’ve been busy over the weekend and didn’t get a chance to record my appreciation to the manager and team on winning the SPL.

Then I read this written and posted by The Singing Detective…….

    The Lotta Them….

……I never thought I’d see the day when we’d be targeted with such loathing and resentment by a Celtic supporter (?) on a Celtic blog.

I respect everybody’s right to express their opinion and I defend that right, but I was shocked by the unexpectedness of the sentiments expressed. Obviously there is some latent rancour in this individual which doesn’t sit well on this blog.

Anyway, not to be distracted, I’m so pleased to read the good news about Oscar, may God bless him and his family.

  18. Going to be a scorcher on the Black-Sea today (8:31am)

Just reading through the night shift stuff there and i think being the only member who actually has his home in a muslim country(turkiye 14 yrs) (burgas is my holiday home if anyone is wondering) i was tempted to type my own thoughts and experience’s throughout the years living with muslims.

Maybe for another day, but dont for one minute think your 2 week holiday excursion is a true picture of living in a muslim country.

  19. Morning all!

Fantastic news about wee Oscar! Hope to see you at Celtic Park in the near future.
