Maley, Stein, McNeill, O’Neill, Strachan and now Lennon

913

Good afternoon, champions!  If you enjoy your history……….

Yesterday, Celtic retained the league title, which has been a rare achievement for much of our history.  We won six in a row during the first decade of the 20th century, then won four in a row (1914-17) during the Great War, but it would be another 50 years before Celtic retained the league title, on 6th May 1967.

Jock Stein re-wrote all the rules during his nine in a row era but after that ended in 1974,  Billy McNeill retained the tile in 1982 and it would be another 20 years before Martin O’Neill retained it, the only time he did so.

Gordon Strachan then set about writing his own chapter in our history, retaining the league in 2007 and 2008, while becoming only the third manager in our history, after Willie Maley and Stein, to win three in a row (history awaits you, Neil).

Neil Lennon now joins a select band of Celtic managers, Maley, Stein, McNeill, O’Neill and Strachan, who have retained the league title.

In total Celtic have retained the league title 22 times but yesterday was only the fourth time since nine in a row.  It was the sixth time in total we have won two in a row.

Remarkably, of the 13 times Celtic have retained the league since 1919, this is only the third time it has been achieved at Celtic Park, the other occasions being when we beat St Mirren in 1982 (remember unwelcome half time news from Pittodrie over the PA?), and Livingston, to win the 2002 title.  Lazy journalism prevents me from confirming which of the pre-1920 titles were won at Celtic Park.

This is your history, I hope you enjoy the memories as much as I do.

The Andrea Kearney Fund, which supports women diagnosed with cancer during pregnancy, is holding its annual dinner at the Radisson Hotel in Glasgow on Saturday 1 June.  The event is excellent value with a cracking line up of entertainment, including Ricky Ross, Michelle McManus and Lou Hickey.  The fight against this disease goes on….

You can book a table here.  Look forward to seeing you at the dinner.

Enjoying the incredulous Sevco 5088 events, more on that later.

I’ve caught up a bit on the goings on at ibrokes, they are done, gone and dead…

Offer them £750k plus 2 of our youngsters season long loans. They are in need of cash now, especially as they have been ordered to pay circa £200k for Castellano (though they are appealing it).

United will lose Daly for nothing in the summer. They can’t afford for that to happen again. Russell will leave this summer.

Fair play to Dundee Utd highlighting the role played by the agent on this and also making clear that their players are available at the right price. They have some great young talent up there but obviously need to sell to survive. I would like to think if we do approach them we would do the right thing and pay them a decent fee. At the end of the day you can only compete if there are competitors in existence, except the zombies of course, they just cheat – always did, always do and always will.

  7. DU statement a clear “come and get him” message to interested clubs for Johnny Russell, going as far as to quote the value of a rejected bid.

I reckon £700k to £900k would do it.

Good price and good prospect, what’s not to like.

That is the plan regards Hooper. He won’t leave (if he goes) until the CL qualifiers are completed.

Do not be surprised to see Hooper sign a new deal and leave in 12 months time for a much higher fee than we would get this summer.

I’d love to see someone prove otherwise but terminology is vital. They are playing because they were given Rangers’SFA (IL) MEMBERSHIP.

The Sevco prospectus stated that they were given a licence to play Scottish Football by the SFA but it also says they are playing in SPL3

I would be delighted if Hooper done a Stan Petrov and signed a new deal and then departed soon after leaving us £8m richer. A win win deal all round.

  12. Last week I thought Johnny Russell would cost around 2m and was debating if we should buy him.

If he’s available for 1m or less it’s a no brainer!!

He’s a better player than Stokes

  13. Livibhoy,

There are a few decent young players at Celtic right now who could with a season or two of first team football.

Players like Twardzik, George, Irvine, Chalmers and Herron. I think they are all in their final year under 20.

    Russell for a million is a must-have,IMO

At that price I would even give them a 20% sell-on clause.

And a couple of our youngsters to ‘bring on’ on loan.

It would be good for Jackie as well as for both clubs.

Not the usual anecdotes and interesting tales. He was a very good fit at Liverpool. Unless you immerse yourself in the culture of the country you live in it can be a very lonely place. Learning the language is a must. I see that Pep will give his first press conference for bayern Munich in German. This is the standard that supporters expect and deserve. British players IF they are to make it abroad must change their ways when they get there to succeed. Our culture is vastly different to that of most if not all continental countries.

Rush was one of the countries great strikers BTW. Just had no chance of making it outsuide the UK.

I often think success for a player in a foreign country is due to their own level of intelligence. Brian and Michael Laudrup are more articulate in English than very many British footballers. They can also speak other languages fluently.

Ian Rush knew a year in advance that he was moving to Juve. He did nothing to learn Italian in that year and cited language difficulties as part of the reason for his difficulties in Italy. Rudd Gullit moved to Italy under the same circumstances, knowing a year in advance of the move where he was going. He used the time to learn to speak Italian. Gullit, I would say, is also more proficient in English than Rushie.

  27. Peter houston today spoke out today in defence of nfl.

I’d expect more to back Neil, I won’t hold my breath.

I still think we are crying out for a midfield forward passing playmaker.

A vociferous captain in the mould of Roy Aitken.

    Here’s hoping.

  28. If by CL you mean Champion’s League I should be gone by then. In which case I might have yo up for a Ross County or InverCaley game. Sneckie’s a great town.

If not there’s room at mine.

Option 3 until end of May is big Rangers supporting pal’s flat in Farringdon.

    HH.

  29. I reckon Johnny Russell would be a great purchase for us and I think he would move up to the next level playing in a better team. I was glad he didn’t play in the cup semi if the truth was to be told.

    Off tangent here:

Today, 23rd April, is St George’s Day, I am prepared to bet, having spent several years in England, that large swathes of the English population would not be able to tell you the feast day of their patron saint. For those of you living in England wait a few months then ask English friends and colleagues what date St George’s Day is you’d be surprised how many don’t know.

  30. If I could return to an earlier discussion:

    Celtic and strikers.

During the 60s, 70s and 80s Celtic’s top strikers were exclusively Scottish born and bred.

Bobby Lennox, Stevie Chalmers, John Hughes, Joe McBride, Willie Wallace, Lou Macari, Dixie Deans, Kenny Dalglish, Brian McClair, Frank McGarvey, Charlie Nick, Judas, Walker, Frank Macca, Tommy Coyne… Apologies for any omissions.

Things started to change in the 90s with the arrival of players like Pierre van Hooijdonk, Jorge Cadete, Di Canio, Tommy Johnson, Harald Brattbakk, Mark Viduka and a certain Henrik Larsson.

The MON era saw the arrival of Chris Sutton and John Hartson, and the WGS one the arrival of JVH, Skippy and Maciej Jurawski.

NFL has since signed Anthony Stokes and Gary Hooper.

Seems to be a dearth of quality Scottish born strikers!

Hopeful that Tony Watt will rectify that in the years to come.

    HH!!

  31. Best football autobiography I have read was Peter Marinellos….Now that boy has lived a full life…..highly recommended

  32. TheOriginalSadiesBhoy @11:53 I taught English to professional basket ball players for whom the lessons were a bonus for progress on the court. Keen as mustard they were. I always insisted they remained seated.

If I had any say at Parkhead I’d encourage the youngsters to learn Spanish. It would do no harm for sell on values and be good for them as people. Possibly German too given the way things are going.
