Maley, Stein, McNeill, O’Neill, Strachan and now Lennon

913

Good afternoon, champions!  If you enjoy your history……….

Yesterday, Celtic retained the league title, which has been a rare achievement for much of our history.  We won six in a row during the first decade of the 20th century, then won four in a row (1914-17) during the Great War, but it would be another 50 years before Celtic retained the league title, on 6th May 1967.

Jock Stein re-wrote all the rules during his nine in a row era but after that ended in 1974,  Billy McNeill retained the tile in 1982 and it would be another 20 years before Martin O’Neill retained it, the only time he did so.

Gordon Strachan then set about writing his own chapter in our history, retaining the league in 2007 and 2008, while becoming only the third manager in our history, after Willie Maley and Stein, to win three in a row (history awaits you, Neil).

Neil Lennon now joins a select band of Celtic managers, Maley, Stein, McNeill, O’Neill and Strachan, who have retained the league title.

In total Celtic have retained the league title 22 times but yesterday was only the fourth time since nine in a row.  It was the sixth time in total we have won two in a row.

Remarkably, of the 13 times Celtic have retained the league since 1919, this is only the third time it has been achieved at Celtic Park, the other occasions being when we beat St Mirren in 1982 (remember unwelcome half time news from Pittodrie over the PA?), and Livingston, to win the 2002 title.  Lazy journalism prevents me from confirming which of the pre-1920 titles were won at Celtic Park.

This is your history, I hope you enjoy the memories as much as I do.

The Andrea Kearney Fund, which supports women diagnosed with cancer during pregnancy, is holding its annual dinner at the Radisson Hotel in Glasgow on Saturday 1 June.  The event is excellent value with a cracking line up of entertainment, including Ricky Ross, Michelle McManus and Lou Hickey.  The fight against this disease goes on….

You can book a table here.  Look forward to seeing you at the dinner.

Enjoying the incredulous Sevco 5088 events, more on that later.

I’m sure the Catania fans will be underwhelmed, but do you agree that a couple of seasons at Catania would be a great chance for Russell to learn to be a much better, cleverer, more tactically aware player?

A lot of people agree, and STEVEBHOY is drafting an excellent précis of the problem with that particular journo to send to The Herald.

Not trying to get someone the bullet, simply encouraging them to do their jobs properly.

Impartial and diligent reporting should be a given, not a minor miracle!

  5. True Livibhoy but i think another factor is we don’t move the ball fast enough sometimes (usually when Sammy isn’t on) and we lack a bit of creativity and can’t find gaps so it comes down to it, you can have 100% of the ball and still cant get a shot on target, Arsenal and Barca both can have lots of the ball and not break down the opposition. Also Livibhoy the refs up here tend to turn a blind eye to the ole rough housing, holding back and bad offside calls, This season alone i have no idea how many times we got wrong calls for offside especially at the start of the season.

Totally agree. It often appears that the limit of a young Scots player’s ambition is to play in England. There’s a broader horizon than due south, and our kids should be encouraged to go and discover.

I don’t think the bad offside call is a new thing. I remember Tommy Coyne being flagged regularly. The guy was almost destroyed by it. He scored a rake of goals for Dundee playing on the shoulder of the last defender. When he signed for Celtic he had to change his style because he was continually flagged offside.

We need players who are hungry for success and the two lads from United fit the bill. The players stay in the Scottish game which is great for the league and Dundee United get some money from Celtic which in turn they may spend on other Scottish players. It’s good for the league.

What doesn’t help our league is these two guys going to a Derby, Forest or Wolves and siting on the bench.

It’s a total no brainer for me. I would also like to see a few players loaned out to fellow SPL clubs to help with their development.

The strikeforce is a few years time could be Russell & Watt with GMS and Forrest on the wings. That would be excellent for Celtic to have 4 Scotsman playing in the forward areas and great for the national side.

Phone Catania and tell them to add to their offer the services of a seasoned mentor for the lad, someone who can help him acclimatise and learn to appreciate the local culture. You.

Then get word to Johnny Russell and tell him that thing you told us about being in a queue to get onto the steps to get off the beach behind the young local women with the micro-bikinis and the micro flip-flops. Johnny will be on the first plane.

    Ten men

Must admit, after seeing Russell & mackay-Steven this season, 3m for both night be good business. But then I’m sure our scouts will know if we can get better for that cash abroad.

  16. Ten Men Won The League

Celtic will be looking for £10m plus for Hooper. I’m not sure we will get it though. United are skint and we can get a deal done. Every player has their price and when you are offered the cash it’s hard to resist. I would expect Hooper to go for around £8m. I would also expect £2m would be enough to buy both Russell and GMS. If Russell was worth £1m in the last transfer window he will be worth less now. Same goes for GMS.

Depends on the deal. I think Russell would be the one you would want in the door now and if GMS wants to stay another year then so be it.

Jackie and Simon are two guys you would want your youngsters playing under I would hope a loan deal for a few of our players could be worked out too to give them match time in the SPL. Twardzik would be one who would benefit from a loan move to get games.

    Celtic First .@ 9 .57 .

Serie A is certainly tactical.. Russell would have the opportunity to learn a lot… He would be exposed to the demand that a professional football player leads the life of a professional athlete.

Current Catania first pick team is predominantly South American [ Argentina / Uruguay ]].

Had a chat with a Catania supporter on Sunday night re Russell —- he was surprised re the interest in a Scottish player but admitted he knew nothing about Russell and that his view was clouded by having a very negative view re the technical abilities of Scottish players. ..

He jokingly added that if Russell truly was a prospect then Udinese would have signed him by now ——-

  22. Spain’s second division, la Liga Adelante, is a hard slog, with 42 games in the competition and a lot of good teams.

Villarreal are still in with a great chance of going up. With seven games to go they lie fourth, but are only two points behind Girona in the second direct promotion spot (Elche look well clear at the top). The four teams after that vie against each other for the third and final promotion slot in a play-off competition.

I like Villarreal and hope they go up. But if they don’t, it would be brilliant for three or four Celtic bhoys to go there next season, even for half of the season. We know they would be well looked after and it would be great for their education as footballers. Much better than having a colts team in the Scottish league.

It’s an internal enquiry. They can appoint whoever they like. Outcome means nothing to us.

Nothing going on at the Big Hoose should let PL an DD lose sight of the ball.

The price for Hooper (if he goes) will be circa £5m and that would be in the last few days of the August window unless someone offers silly money beforehand, which is unlikely.

DU hold the aces regards both players if we are interested. Clubs know we need to get our squad together before the CL qualifiers begin in mid July.

I think your spot on. I think business has to be done very early as you have said. I would also like to see us buy before we sell. If we sell for decent profits everyone’s value will go up as they know we have plenty to sell. Get them in early and get off to a flyer.

£5m with 20% going to Scunthorpe. Hardly any point selling him is there? We will make back roughly what we paid for him. I think Celtic are holding out for a bigger transfer fee. I reckon it will be just under £8m. If Carroll can go for £35m then the least we should be askking is a quarter of that!

  30. An article in the Sun today suggests that the SFA demanded that sevco carry out an internal investigation into the whyte/green fiasco.

Damned if I remember the SFA making any comment at all on this. An internal investigation at sevco would be about as much use to the SFA as t!ts on a chicken.

If Hooper wants to leave then he (& his agent) should be told he can go once the CL qualifies are completed (last 4 days of the window). That would then give us more time to sign a replacement and integrate him into squad.
