Maley, Stein, McNeill, O’Neill, Strachan and now Lennon

913

Good afternoon, champions!  If you enjoy your history……….

Yesterday, Celtic retained the league title, which has been a rare achievement for much of our history.  We won six in a row during the first decade of the 20th century, then won four in a row (1914-17) during the Great War, but it would be another 50 years before Celtic retained the league title, on 6th May 1967.

Jock Stein re-wrote all the rules during his nine in a row era but after that ended in 1974,  Billy McNeill retained the tile in 1982 and it would be another 20 years before Martin O’Neill retained it, the only time he did so.

Gordon Strachan then set about writing his own chapter in our history, retaining the league in 2007 and 2008, while becoming only the third manager in our history, after Willie Maley and Stein, to win three in a row (history awaits you, Neil).

Neil Lennon now joins a select band of Celtic managers, Maley, Stein, McNeill, O’Neill and Strachan, who have retained the league title.

In total Celtic have retained the league title 22 times but yesterday was only the fourth time since nine in a row.  It was the sixth time in total we have won two in a row.

Remarkably, of the 13 times Celtic have retained the league since 1919, this is only the third time it has been achieved at Celtic Park, the other occasions being when we beat St Mirren in 1982 (remember unwelcome half time news from Pittodrie over the PA?), and Livingston, to win the 2002 title.  Lazy journalism prevents me from confirming which of the pre-1920 titles were won at Celtic Park.

This is your history, I hope you enjoy the memories as much as I do.

The Andrea Kearney Fund, which supports women diagnosed with cancer during pregnancy, is holding its annual dinner at the Radisson Hotel in Glasgow on Saturday 1 June.  The event is excellent value with a cracking line up of entertainment, including Ricky Ross, Michelle McManus and Lou Hickey.  The fight against this disease goes on….

You can book a table here.  Look forward to seeing you at the dinner.

Enjoying the incredulous Sevco 5088 events, more on that later.

I like KC and Forrest but I’m talking about a player who does the unexpected… The type of player who you turn th the person next to you and say ” did you see that” Aiden could do it until he got three defenders on him.

Gary Mackay-Steven can be worth the admission money alone. A throwback to the mythical Scottish tanner ba’ players, who puts in a shift for the team as well. Him on one wing, Forrest on the other and a striker who can head the ball (as well as the obvious other attributes required), that would light up a grey November day at paradise.

Always have a concern about SPL players as most times they don’t have to play against 11 behind the ball, but I suppose most players don’t.

GMS is worth a punt, I saw one of the rags has Russell going to Italy in the summer, If we can clear out miku and Lassad JR would fit right in, big, ball winner and can hold it up all fit Neils game plan.

He looks the type who would relish the challenge. More opportunity to show off his ability and perform his flicks and tricks. Playing with us would also give him more possession of the ball. Given he would only cost around £1m, not a massive gamble either.

Not many of our greatest strikers have been signed out with Scotland. Probably only two or three fit the bill as great Celtic strikers. We have a great record at signing Scottish strikers and getting the best from them. I would see Jonny Russell as a must buy in the summer. GMS would be a nice luxury to have but Russell looks the full package for me and would only get better playing with better players. Dundee United shouldn’t be too hard to deal with as they are skint. £2m should secure both players and maybe throwing a player in going the other way would sweeten the deal. There is also the option of loaning them a player or two for a year which would give them good experience with guys we know are going to play good football and not adopt hammer thrower tactics.

Toshney who is on loan at Dundee hopefully will come back a better player from his loan spell playing in the SPL. Is he ready to stake a claim in the first team squad?

I always like to see home grown players given a decent crack at it.

Exciting times ahead for the club. We will lose players but that is inevitable when you are a success in Europe. It’s all about buying wisely not spending rakes of cash of big names. It’s about moulding a team. I still would like to see an experienced head in the holding midfield role and/or at Centre Back. I think it would benefit the youngsters to have some experience in there especially in Europe. Ball retention is key and we gave the ball away far too much in some European games.

It’s up to Neil Lennon and his coaching team to find the right players and slot them in. I’m sure they will.

With respect, struggling to think of a decent striker for us in the last 25 years who signed from a Scottish side.

    And,yes,that includes McDonald.

  11. Jonny Russell is a good player and could be a usful addition to the squad but I think he’s a bit light-weight to make a huge impact. What is his position? He’s not an out and out striker(too small). He’s not a winger. And he’s not a mid-fielder. Maybe he is one of those “in-the-hole” players.

  12. kevinlasvegas on

Skippy, Stokes have been decent in the spl. Lots of bad ones though and there is an argument for players in scotland being out their depth at CP. We’ve saw it too often.

Maybe that is where we have been going wrong. We have bought some costly strikers who have picked up big salaries and delivered little. Any striker from any level should be able to play at Celtic park with the players we have and bag a couple of goals.

Russell fits the bill as a hard wroking striker who scores and creates goals. he can header a ball which is a rarity in our team these days.

Plus all credit to Neil ,the Celtic squad and backroom staff for all there hard work during the season and delivering the title, let’s hope we can win the double and end the season on a high with another Cup in the trophy cabinet

We have been spoiled over the years by the quality of our strikers,no denying it.

    Some real belters and hunskelpers.

As a result, those who are merely decent pale by comparison.

POTY for me is KC. He’s been up and down i know but up more then most of his team mates. Scored some important goals and great return for a midfielder, Stan i think was our last consistant goal scorer from Middle of the park. weird because Brown, Kayal, Vic,Charlie and Joe all have a right good dig on them and don’t shoot.

  21. I think it would be a great move for Johnny Russell to go to Italy for a couple of years and then sign for Celtic. He will be more affordable for us at that point than lads who went to England, such as James McCarthy, and he will be a much better player.

It’s a very exciting prospect, a lad from Dundee United signing for a top 10 Italian league club.

  22. BOBBY MURDOCH’S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS

No offence to the current strikers but a league without deidco and they should be getting 20-25 league goals as a minimum.

I have been disappointed that a goal scoring record hasn’t been broken this season.

    Maybe next year.

Fear not, Mr Wilson ( describes himself as freelance) but writes his Sevco bulletins mainly for the Herald.. Many CQNers and beyond have him well sussed. His relentless denial and PR have stopped many on here, myself included( after 40 yrs or so) from reading the Herald.

The more players in the defence the more we have the ball. I don’t think that’s an excuse. Aberdeen came to Celtic Park a few years ago and played almost 8 at the back and we beat them 9-0!

    Jonny Russell ?

Catania media outlets are claiming that Catania have made 3 bids for Johnny Russell in the past 4 weeks. .

Catania media outlets are claiming that Catania are refusing to pay more than 750 k euros for Russell..

Catania media outlets are claiming that Russell , Catania and Dundee Utd are all very aware that his contract is running down and that if the man really wants to play for Catania all he has to do is wait..

The typical Catania fan seems to be underwhelmed at the prospect .

Both Russell and Mackay-Steven are good players, and I would be pleased were Celtic to sign either of them.

Russell is the more productive of the two, and with 20 goals in 34 this season, is starting to gain the consistency that comes with experience. Strong, fast, a good footballer and a good finisher.

Mackay-Steven is less consistent at the moment, which perhaps comes with the position he plays, but has a unique talent that is worth the punt.

One of the positives about signing them is that the money stays in the Scottish game, but we perhaps forget that neither of them are particularly young, Russell being 23 and GMS 5 months younger. Their development will accelerate in the coming 24 months but whether that will be enough to bring them up into European level is the unknown.

For me, Russell would be a replacement for Stokes, while GMS might be good cover for the younger James Forrest. Neither though will improve the team in the short term. They represent a punt along the same lines as Hooper did 3 years ago and Bangura the following, for less outlay.

    That’s a fair spread imo.
