Manager and team must show stoic unity

1148

You can train to be a football player for years, hone your skills and work on your fitness, but there are situations you can never prepare for until you are in the spotlight.  Yesterday Mark Wilson had to field questions about his team-mates’ performance and his manager’s position, after another abject performance which drew criticisms from Neil Lennon towards the players.

Mark gave a textbook response to the BBC, “I don’t like slagging my team-mates off but we have to do better.

“Football is a result-driven game but we don’t want that [Neil Lennon sacked].  We are firmly behind the manager and we love working with him and the coaching staff.”

We should be in no doubt that harsh words are being spoken in the dressing room and team spirit must be awful, but the outside world need to see stoic unity.

If Neil does not make it to the end of the season which is looking likely given our recent predicament, expect Roy Keane to be on the opposite side of the revolving door. Hope I’m wrong.

  2. Oh and by the way.

Those who did have shoes were belted and condemned to hell if they DID polish them since it meant they could stand near the girls and check the reflection from up their skirts.

Girls also had to have dull shoes on in case the image tempted boys. This is where my ladies shoe fetish came from.

  3. Having read back, some of the posts on here in the last twenty-four hours have been the best I’ve ever seen in such a short period. JF and AH real time debate last night was brilliant, had I seen that coming I‘d have stayed-up and put the extra hour to better use. TBB post earlier was, well, breath-taking.

That’s the difference, the passion, the positive wanting better for our team. As opposed to the negative hatred for their ‘enemy’, and the assumption that they have people who will make it all better when things go wrong. That’s why when the balloon goes up, they will not be outside their stadium en masse demanding a solution. That’s why there is no huns-fur-change campaign.

There is no way HMRC will let them get away with a £10m settlement. Another fantasy island (OK boss) attempt at trying to move the debate into their comfort zone, just like the story of them being re-admitted to the SPL will no more than a 25 point penalty. (Today they now realise no more European football for three years if they try and pull this stunt)

IMO Lenny should have our full support until the end of the season at least. If this means popular players have to go, then so be it. They clearly have the ability to do better, and could just as easily undermine or underperform for any replacement.

Let me say this – because I want to leave my knowledge of the story and its source in the past because it is a lot older than people are now making out – I fully expect Kris to be playing in our first team as soon as fit.

Like I said – squabbles in the dressing room are the least of worries.

There is not just one thing wrong at our club.

There are many things wrong all at once.

And it all crystallises on the pitch – and I for one am not seeing any improvement in a game to game basis.

As I stated earlier there’s a simple question needs answered –

Could another manager get more out of these players.

Now, I know your level head would proffer that that question’s answer is subjective but there comes a point when – no, it’s not

Either the players or the manager are not good enough.

Celtic (Fortunately or unfortunately) doesn’t really have room for inconsistency – Martin O’Neill knew this, Gordon Strachan had to learn this and Tony Mowbray… well enough said there.

But Neil had consistency did he not?

We should have been weeding out the dross and fine tweaking the class this season.

    The rot should have stopped.

It hasn’t – it seems to have come back refreshed – with new levels of ignominy to foist upon managers and fans alike.

Of all I’ve read on here today the one thing that keeps perking and bubbling away in my mind is this – David Hay and Wullie McStay to settle this ship – don’t know who suggested it.

We need some real seasoned campaigners in the dressing room – and that should start with the management team I’m afraid.

Just like Tommy Burns – Neil isn’t finished with Celtic and neither is Celtic finished with Neil but this present experiment has to stop.

  5. Ah think too many of our players crumble when the pressure is on.

Yesterday complacency morphed into fear morphed into cowardice.

Now we are getting to the reeasons, players will be cautious, timid or afraid when they are not confident that they can carry out instructions or they do not trust their colleagues or leaders ( if we have any)

It goes back tae having a spine in yir team.

Should the team wae the third largest season book holding in Europe have

A third choice Newcastle goalkeeper serving his apprenticeship as our Nos 1.

A central defence devoid of quality.

A strike force supplemented with a £2m forward when £4m or £5m should be spent.

A young team needs a sprinkling of experience where better than the spine.

Its like being in a nightmare 12 points behind a bankrup Rangers and falling further behind as time goes on. Then the mention of John yogi Hughes a genuine nice guy but a managerial failure how on earth does anyone believe that is progress ? We must bring in an experienced manager who has had some success and dont tell me no one wants to manage Celtic a club who can attract 60,000 supporters to home games and who should be playing in the Champions league every season.Lets set our sights higher and get some confidence this is the famous Glasgow Celtic we are talking about.H.H.

    Letter in today’s Observer :

DON’T TAX US WITH UNFAIR JIBES

HM Revenue and Customs has taken quite a battering in recent months. The Media (including The Observer last week ” Welcome To Britain, A Haven For Tax Dodgers”), Parliament and pressure groups have variously accused HMRC of dishonesty, incompetence, secrecy and doing dodgy “sweetheart deals” with big business.

As Chairman of HMRC, i feel that i should stand up publicly to defend the competence and integrity of my department. Last year , we brought in a record £486 billion in tax revenue. Included in that was a record £13.9 billion recovered from individuals and businesses who bent or broke the rules – more than twice as much as in 2005.

HMRC does not do “sweetheart deals” with big business. Our job is to get the tax that they owe. Since we can’t talk about the details of these cases we are accused of unnecessary secrecy. The real culprits are those who hide funds in offshore accounts, cheat their VAT and falsify their accounts.

I don’t understand how things have gone wrong so suddenly this season. Last season, the same group of players, and the same management team, were one match away from winning the domestic double, with our highest points total in the league for years.

Something is very obviously wrong, but I’d be loathe to replace the manager just yet, certainly not at this stage in the season.

My own thoughts on what we require are informed by Brian Clough’s Derby County years.

He started out as a manager even younger than Neil Lennon and had a young, promising team at Derby. What turned that promise into success was the signing of Dave MacKay.

I don’t know the name of the player we need, but if I was Neil Lennon, I’d be looking for my Dave MacKay. I’d be looking for someone who has been a really top-class midfielder, someone over 6′ tall, who could put the fear of God into opponents and team-mates alike. Someone in his mid-30’s who might be tempted by a final pay-day, and be able and willing to take a step back into defence. Perhaps most unlikely of all, someone who has EPL experience but is willing to earn that final pay-day in the SPHell.

We desperately need experience in the team, because we are capable of scinitillating football, but are extremely brittle in temperament. We need on-field leadership and we need it very quickly.

  14. Terry O- I think you are spot on, the away fans are generally more patient than the home “customers”, take Wednesday night- the players were simply revelling in it.

At home yesterday they were much more cautious, the trepidation ran right through the team- they take the easy option every time.

If we get an early goal it is different, it calms the nerves and keeps the crowd onside.

You may recall the “MIB strike” game last year, 2-2 v ICT, the players- Dan & Thomas in particular were almost paralysed with fear in the last 10 mins subsequently we lost 2 late goals.

  19. I watched two games over the weekend.

I travelled to Celtic Park yesterday and Casement Park today.

The first game was played by well paid professionals and the latter by amateur sportsmen.

If my football team displayed a 10th of the passion, pride and will to win that was on display today at Casement Park, we would be heading for the treble my friends.

I accept that some of our players acted cowardly yesterday. But what has caused this collapse? I have no idea of anything happenoing behind the scenes. But increasingly this season, apart from occasional glimpses of their reality ability, in most games , since the one at Ibrox, we have performed very poorly.

Why are we so demanding of Celtic ?

We do not criticise OURSELVES so severely.

We don’t expect our friends to constantly satisfy our expectations.

We would not dream of showing our disapproval of our offspring, however they chose to behave.

Why, of all the people that we care for, is it only Celtic who have to match our expectations ?

I would not ever let anybody know if I was unhappy with my friends or my family, for the simple reason that I love them.

For that same reason I will NEVER say anything negative about Celtic.
