Many will live the rest fo their days only seeing Celtic win the league

963

I’ve said for a while that very few people realise the enormity of what happened in Scottish football in 2012. Some thought there would be a three-year blip before ‘normality’ was restored. Until very recently prevailing perception is that the current ‘abnormal’ circumstances may last 10 years. The old normal isn’t coming back.

When I talked about how few people realised the permanent consequences of Rangers liquidation on the Scottish football to my brother, he was of the view that the penny wouldn’t drop until Newco were in their second season in the Premiership.

They had all the excuses in the world when they were in the lower leagues, and a genuinely good excuse during their first season in the top flight, but when things don’t improve in the second season, a retrenchment will start.

By then it will be evident that the legendary gap below Celtic is huge, that Newco are effectively cannon fodder, that their fans are a cash cow topping up the coffers of every club they visit (including Celtic), but that no matter what they pay for their season tickets, Newco will always be underfunded.

Season ticket sales at current levels are not sustainable to watch a team fail so miserably. Even this miserable team is not sustainable with the current business model. The retrenchment will be real and painful. Questions are now being asked about how they get themselves out of this mess (16 years too late). There will be no answer.

They will win the odd game against Celtic, and pick up a cup occasionally (if Ross County can do it anyone can), but Newco will only win the league if Celtic get their big move. Many football fans in Scotland will live the rest of their lives only seeing Celtic win the league. Just think of that for a moment.  Buying your losers ticket each season will be a painful business.  Some will find other things to occupy themselves with.

The real question that should be asked, is how sustainable is a Rangers club that’s as much chance of winning the title as St Johnstone? The answer will be evident by this time next season.

I’ve been wondering whether Warburtons mathematical gymnastics are insane ramblings or whether Celtic losing 4 and Sevco winning an extra game was their hypothesis after the league fixtures were ‘randomly generated’?

Did they think that we might lose to Aberdeen, Hearts and St Johnstone – maybe entertaining the hope that they might beat us at Ibrox?

Was 10 points behind in January the best outcome they ever really anticipated?

As I was driving up to Brizzle Airport I was listening to Jeremy Vine on Radio 2 who had a young Scottish couple on who were recounting there awful experience of having a stillborn child (I have first hand experience of this awful event).

They mentioned the SiMBA Ambassador whom they felt had helped them immensely and spoke so highly of her and how she helped them cope with this awful event – Lisa Hague. Another credit to humanity and of course our beloved club. It was quite an emotional story.

  8. GFTB,

Thanks mate, the flight was a dawdle despite the wind, it was the bus journey to Glasgow that was more dangerous! My flight happened to arrive about the same time as the Belfast flight. Sitting on the bus surrounded by dead people and the one in front of me with his “sevco ‘Til I die” wristband when my mate Niall decides to phone me to see if I want to go to the rugby tomorrow. Suddenly the air was filled with my ringtone ”The Celtic Song” – funnily enough they all kept quiet – MIND THE GAP :-))

So for the moment two things first:

    Second:

We approach ever closer to A day — A standing for Analysis.

Analysis — proper business analysis is not spin, it is not hype, it is not farting into the wind on a blog and perpetually predicting the outcome of court cases and what might happen, could happen, or even maybe happened — past tense.

A day, is when it becomes glaringly clear that flushes have been busted and that there will and cannot be a return what many thought was the norm but never really was.

The Quayside court case tells us that what was supposedly normal banking practice for a whole host of people really was a criminal enterprise. Anyone who thinks that this case and the people involved stand alone, acted in isolation and were in any way unique are fans of Hans Christian and the Brothers Grimm.

While I am not keen on Paul’s article saying that only Celtic will win the league in the forseeable future ( and I am not keen because no one knows for sure what is round the corner and because proper sport is meant to throw up surprises ) let there be no doubt that for twenty years Scottish Football witnessed, got used to, became immune to and was dominated by a bloated imposter of a Football Club that did not, could not and should not have existed within the proper rules of football governance.

The existence, the discovery, uncovering and fall from grace of the bloated imposter cannot and will not be swept under the carpet or forgotten about no matter how many wish it were so.

Stand by yer bunks and be prepared to be Janus who both looked forward and back. Look forward to Celtic under Rodgers and the Celtic that is being built at the moment. Look back and understand that there should never have been any commercial partnerships with a business entity that was sham from top to bottom, living on floating credit, massaged accounts, false financials in any real sense of the word and ran by people who admitted that they avoided transparency and disclosure for fear of being sanctioned lest footballing authorities disapproved and punished them for their business practices.

That was and is the reality. The declared champions of Scotland over a prolonged period deliberately and willfully covered up what they were about and who they were about it with.

You will note that in the Quayside case that none of the people involved have ever been sanctioned, sued or pursued by anyone at The Bank of Scotland.

Ask yourself why that should be?

However, when they were uncovered and pursued by the police and the DPP HBOS threw them to the wind — luxury yachts and all.

Proper football Governance complete with transparency and accountability would have avoided all of that and Celtic should be in the vanguard calling for such Governance. To an extent they are but when the time comes they must kick the door in and rather than request it politely they must demand it vehemently.

And as has been pointed out before, investing in proper football management and players is the one sure way of putting bums on seats and increasing revenue.

I am pleased we are doing that these days as all other strategies have proven to be second class and produced second class results.

Look back, learn, don’t repeat the mistakes — and look forward!

    The A day cometh.

  21. Good evening fellow Tims.

I don’t post often, preferring to lurk.

The reason for posting this evening is to recruit new players for the cqn weekly 5 a side game.

A number of CQN luminaries, as well as lurkers, have been playing a Thursday evening game in the south side of Glasgow for the past few years.

We are a friendly ( at least off the pitch) , sociable and hospitable bunch who are very welcoming to new players( even to the token sevconite in the squad).

If anyone is considering giving it a go but are thinking I’m not fit enough, I’m not good enough, its been years since I played, come along and you will soon realise that you will fit right in.

Cost is £6 per game which allows us to run up some excess funds which go towards a couple of nights out per year.

So if you are interested email me at cqnfives@gmail.com
