Maribor slight favourites

2143

Celtic will face Maribor from Slovenia in the Champions League play-off round.  Maribor, of course, played a critical part in the death of Rangers, when they eliminated Ally MsCoist’s team from Europe a few months after Craig Whyte took over from Sir David Murray.  Having heard the 6-1 aggregate result against Legia, they are already celebrating the draw.

Maribor gave Wigan two hard games in last season’s Europa League, winning their home tie and causing the FA Cup holders more trouble than expected in England.  They progressed to the knock out round before going out 4-3 on aggregate to Sevilla – a feat Celtic would not have been capable of. Right now, they should be slight favourites.

If you missed it, today’s earlier article on Lady Luck, HMRC and money is here.

Join the Celtic Graves Society, Fergus McCann and many more at Kilsyth Cemetery on Saturday, 18 August, to commemorate the final resting place of the great Jimmy Quinn. Full details below or at Celtic Graves.

  1. 67 – no disagreement there. I hate them like you would not imagine.

RWE – my point might have been lost out of frustration but we need investment. This good news albeit “lucky” news will not save our season.

Corkbhoy – I am a Celtic supported which can be backed up by many on here. I hate the fact were doing feck all to improve?

It’s not a HUN syndrome, it’s just painful to watch !!!

  2. Just watched Ronny’s press conference with the smsm…

I don’t know if he is a first class manager but he’s first class at dealing with the media.

    Well impressed!

We were really poor, though, and RD, as manager, needs to sort it quick

  6. stbf, It wasn’t just me it was a club effort. I don’t want to piss ppl off on here but I have huge huge gripe with the directors. Our recall to CL duty via a stupid Admin error is not going to paper over the cracks

Lawell & Co need to talk and talk now.

I will apologies later in the season if I’m wrong, no doubt about it.

We need action and action now.

  7. PS…

This talk of Celtic offering their place to LW is simply nonsense…

Were LW to take the CL place uefa’s sanction would have been made void and their Disciplinary Regulations overturned.

Yeah uefa are going to accept that. Its uefas ball and not to be interfered with!

  8. the long wait is over on

Supposing LW had realised they couldn’t put yer man on the subs bench who’s to say that they wouldn’t have dropped one of the original starters to the bench in his place and started with a different 11 .

Different starting team , multiple different scenarios on the pitch.

The new starter might have given away a free kick from which we scored or got sent off or any number of other possibilities. From there who’s to say what would have happened.

Maybe he’s a big motivator in the dressing room but would have been less influential from not being on the bench.

In other words the players involvement in the whole thing cannot just be measured from when he came on.

There are too many subtle , tiny details that might , might have been different.

    There , I think I’ve almost convinced myself…

  9. Craigellachie10 on

The new SFA compliance officer sounds vaguely Timmy. Something for the hordes to get into a froth about as if they didn’t have enough already – celtics CL reprieve, Hector’s persistence, nash’s salary, poor souls.

  10. From twitter so deffo true!

@LJPmcLoughlin: John Terry claims credit for Celtic’s Champions League progression.

  11. Another football cliche blown out the water……….. My Da used to say to me ‘they might be a better side than us son, on paper but you cannae win a game on paper’…………. If you’re looking down Da…..Tell that to Legia -;)

  12. Bada Bing, I seriously doubt that a EUEFA spokesman would even comment on a case which is going to appeal.

  13. justafan

I agree. Furthermore, I believe that only a manager confident in his ability would be able to deal with the MSSM so comfortably. As it is too early to judge Ronny on team performance, I am judging him on how he projects himself. I have confidence in him but if the vast majority of Celtic fans don`t have, then he would need to be super-human to withstand the negativity he would experience from `friend` and foe alike. Give him a chance.

  14. Just Another Tim on

I would be very surprised if the Legia appeal is successful. What kind of message does that send to others clubs. If Legia win their appeal it effectively gives permission for teams to field ineligible players in the knowledge that they will only receive a financial punishment.

  15. the long wait is over on

All hilarity aside do we know , definitively, if Legia have a right of Appeal, whether the claim to or not?

  16. They fought the Lawwell and the Lawwell wine….

He’s not very good but he is lucky..

  17. Rock Tree Bhoy on

Wouldn’t be too sure about Legia’s appeal being bound to fail – why register a player for a cup tie when he is suspended and ineligible to play?

  18. Celtic are a PLC and must act in the interests of Shareholders, they couldn’t possibly turn down the chance to earn up to 20 million. I suppose we could offer to go over and play them in a fund raiser, it could be billed as the grudge match.

  19. Surprisingly close to the consensus view amongst our 5s players last night, including some people you’ve crossed swords with.

Where’s the punishment if you don’t lose a member of the squad? What if they could slot in a like for like player?

The punishment derives from having to register a player that can’t play.

  21. Sorry if it’s been asked and answered…. in the middle of a shall we say debate.

Any information on other teams punished for playing banned players in Europe? I Know teams have been banned but don’t know which ones.

  22. mike in toronto on

I am usually more in the mineshafter camp, but for some reason, I have a good feeling about the team this year (a few insipid performance notwithstanding).

And, while both SB and JF can frustrate the hell out of me, I think they could both be important to how RD wishes us to play. In the right matches, SB will bring a bit of steel that was missing, while I think JF will blossom on the right side of an attacking three this year. He seems to be one of the few who really can play at the pace that RD seems to want.

I’ll go out on a limb here, and say that I think James Forrest is going to be the player of the year in scotland this year. Just remember who told you (unless he isn’t, in which case, forget I mentioned it!)

Now, all I want is RD to play the players in their proper posiitions … LG is a central striker (not a wide right of the front three ) …. and I will be a happy bhoy!

I would offer Legia nothing to be honest. They made their mistakes on and off the pitch. It is not our doing they made errors with two missed penalties and an adminstrative error.

This is the harsh reality of football. Rangers cheated us for years and I feel no sympathy for them.

Show no mercy. It is not our doing or business.

Hard luck Legia but you undone yourselves. We move on.

PS: I would be on the blower for Radovic and wouldn’t care if he can’t play in Europe. The boy is a serious player and will entertain and provide goals.

  26. Rock Tree Bhoy, Those are the rules, you are obliged to register the player to play and then not to play him, in order for him to serve his suspension. If we are doing things right we would have registered Efe to play against them last Wed. If we didn’t we won’t be able to use him against Maribor.

  27. corkcelt

I’m certain Celtic know the drill. We have had plenty players sent off in Europe.

Interesting that the Europa Cup Final is actually in Warsaw, which may or may not figure in any appeal against the decision. As for the draw itself, as things stand Maribor will rightly see themselves as favourites, but the second leg is three weeks away, surely room for some improvement in the meantime. The Europa League itself is full of teams that could give us problems, but at least now Celtic are guaranteed Euro football until late in the year, as Peter Lawwell might say, well that is a bonus for a start!
