Maribor slight favourites

2143

Celtic will face Maribor from Slovenia in the Champions League play-off round.  Maribor, of course, played a critical part in the death of Rangers, when they eliminated Ally MsCoist’s team from Europe a few months after Craig Whyte took over from Sir David Murray.  Having heard the 6-1 aggregate result against Legia, they are already celebrating the draw.

Maribor gave Wigan two hard games in last season’s Europa League, winning their home tie and causing the FA Cup holders more trouble than expected in England.  They progressed to the knock out round before going out 4-3 on aggregate to Sevilla – a feat Celtic would not have been capable of. Right now, they should be slight favourites.

If you missed it, today’s earlier article on Lady Luck, HMRC and money is here.

Join the Celtic Graves Society, Fergus McCann and many more at Kilsyth Cemetery on Saturday, 18 August, to commemorate the final resting place of the great Jimmy Quinn. Full details below or at Celtic Graves.

  1. Mike.

Agreed regarding LG, he is no winger, he seems to get more goals when he cuts in from the left too (which he can do more often from ST).

  2. Dear Mr Corkcelt,

Glad to see you are keeping up.

Maybe we could raid Legia’s squad with the extra money we have. Just for a laugh.

“stbf, It wasn’t just me it was a club effort”

Well, my congratulations and admiration to all involved.

We can disagree over the less important matters of whether we need a £m forward or a £5m forward whilst agreeing that our Legia performances were of a level that did not do justice to our club.

I hope you are wrong about the future direction but sometimes there is a crossover of predictions by those allocated to the happyclapper and mineshafter camps.

This happyclapper, far from predicting Euro glory, has been saying for years that we have punched above our weight, and we have been girning whilst we had great nights as a Pot 4 team beating the big boys. I always said we would get a doing one day and last year we got it from Barca.

Nobody, not even the most pessimistic mineshafter, thought we were capable of 2 such inept performances against Legia. There were no signs from the Rejkjavik qualification matches of how bad we were going to be.

I am sure we both hope you are wrong but I share the fears that, currently, we are in a bad place in terms of football. I hope we consolidate and recover but, no matter how well we do, I believe we have a glass ceiling to break through and it will be difficult to do that, even if we changed all our boardroom custodians.

Let me finish by repeating, in case any of your critics harbour doubts, that the generosity of the singapore celts was of an astounding level. Let no-one doubt your credentials.

We can still argue about the lesser stuff (temporary players and boardroom guys) though :-)

Fair enough – I think we are all a wee bit post Legia-result sensitive.

I said earlier that our team on Wednesday was bereft of passion, ideas and purpose, and that RD and his coaching staff are responsible. However, I think that some of our usually reliable senior pros are not that comfortable with the new regime.

Commons, Stokes and Mulgrew did not look like they were really up for it, and the others just fell into line with that. The younger players showed up better, but there are signs for me that there is dressing room dissent, albeit a might covert at this time.

Our pass and move tactic seemed restricted to pass and very little movement. We were very easily neutralized by the Legia, and when we lost possession we looked almost unable to win the ball back.

Big ask for RD, but this could be a defining moment for him. Whatever the club/board should or might do is not that relevant for the qualifier against Maribor. If we throw money around on an impact player and get him in, we will be in the position we were with Berget before the Warsaw game. Everything on one throw of the dice. Ronny needs to sort out which of his players he can trust to do what he asks of them, and field a balanced side with committed players.

Losing a game is not that big an issue for me, as we will lose some games over the stretch – it is the way we lose. On Wednesday, we didn’t lose well and that is what hurts the most. In Warsaw too for that matter, we played poorly and ended up showing more passion for a punchup than scoring goals.

As for the alleged comment by a Uefa spokesman that Legie have strong grounds to win an appeal, I’d be astonished if a Uefa official would be stupid enough to say that out loud. There again it is Uefa so…

  9. If an appeal is going to be heard it needs to be soon.

Celtic need to know their budget for signing players.

I’m sure our own lawyers are puring over the rules in advance of any changes to a verdict.

Don;t see it changing but our board will not release funds to buy until they are sure.

Anybody out there who believes that the SFA would not have taken the same courageous decision is sadly mistaken, as East Stirlingshire, and Hutchieson BC, have discovered to their cost. Big clubs, big names, treated without fear or favour!

    Cheers lads….

Just so everyone doesn’t think my account has been hacked by some happycamper …. I’m still not sure how KC (who, at the moment, is our most important player) will fit into the 4-3-3 system that RD seems to favour ….

For me, he would start every SPL game, played just behind LG in in a 4-4-1-1, or my preferred 3-5-1-1 …

Put that cutlass down ya mad corsair you!

Ref RD changing too much too quickly…..I hear you and Rome wasn’t built in a day and all that.

    3 points if I may though……

Some of the ‘moves’ on wed weren’t all that different. Too many diagonal punts or kick outs to an isolated striker……except it was to stokes and later Griffiths rather than the taller Sammi.

Never mind shape, tactics, etc the majority on wed failed in terms of basic skills, application and concentration. That may have taken a questionable strategy and guaranteed it’s failure.

If – as was said on here the other night – one of the main strikers was out his face in a pub on Sunday night how can he expect to put into practice a high pressing, high tempo game plan.

Now I caveat the last point big time by saying I’m never out in the hip young footie star places so I’ll never witness it myself. But I will say we need model pros whoever the boss is. Otherwise, they can ship out as far as I’m concerned.

I am of a similar opinion on KC in that I am unsure where he would fit in. However, I do not want to see him go as he has been our best Player in my opinion.

It will be interesting to see what he is offered in way of a new contract.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  22. Big Wavy

An established YOUNG! SPL striker who can bag goals at that price is a steal, more so for US than for Rotherham. Stokes, Griffiths, Broony, Chaz as a few examples in the current squad as to how quickly they tend settle. Man we paid like 2m for Stokes if I remember right.

    HH!
