Maribor slight favourites

2143

Celtic will face Maribor from Slovenia in the Champions League play-off round.  Maribor, of course, played a critical part in the death of Rangers, when they eliminated Ally MsCoist’s team from Europe a few months after Craig Whyte took over from Sir David Murray.  Having heard the 6-1 aggregate result against Legia, they are already celebrating the draw.

Maribor gave Wigan two hard games in last season’s Europa League, winning their home tie and causing the FA Cup holders more trouble than expected in England.  They progressed to the knock out round before going out 4-3 on aggregate to Sevilla – a feat Celtic would not have been capable of. Right now, they should be slight favourites.

If you missed it, today’s earlier article on Lady Luck, HMRC and money is here.

Join the Celtic Graves Society, Fergus McCann and many more at Kilsyth Cemetery on Saturday, 18 August, to commemorate the final resting place of the great Jimmy Quinn. Full details below or at Celtic Graves.

Players’ lifestyles will be a big issue for JD/JC. It was obvious that the British Isles based players were breathing out their erchies in the last 15 minutes. That sort of thing is not tolerated in most European countries. England have not looked like winning anything for a very long time due to the fact that their players are simply not fit enough. Here in Germany they can run for 120 minutes if neccessary. Without fitness we will not be able to play a pressing game. Get them sorted out Ronny!

No bad pal……Hope all is well with you and yours……….. Just need to sell this place here and I will be back on track or come out of semi-retirement (or else might have to go back to working for a living. Jeez, where to start?).

All things considered, life is good. Back in Amen Corner for a wee while early/mid September and remembering that our mutual pal is back in October, that leaves me just over three weeks to get out and back on a plane again, before I end up wandering about long closed Beecham machete train stations and taxi ranks to nowhere at all hours of the night!

Some of the ‘moves’ on wed weren’t all that different. Too many diagonal punts or kick outs to an isolated striker……except it was to stokes and later Griffiths rather than the taller Sammi.

Aye. Sometimes I think FF is auto-piloting in those situations. Defo more application and concentration needed. The youngsters seem to show that for me though, which gives me great hope.

    LMAO!!!

Someone has edited Bobo Balde’s Celtic career on Wikipedia

    Celtic[edit]

Baldé signed for Celtic on 21 July 2001[4] and became a regular player in Celtic’s team and eventually a legend and was voted Celtic’s greatest ever player in a fan poll on the official club website. Balde made 232 appearances (51 as a sub) during his spell as a Hoops’ player and scored an incredible 253 goals.[5]

He made his debut on 8 September in a 3–1 win at home to Dunfermline Athletic against who he scored all three goals [6] 4 SPL games later he scored his 7th Celtic goal on 20 October 2001 against Dundee United at Celtic Park. In that entire season Baldé scored a total of 65 goals including one in the Scottish Cup final against Rangers when he rose above Lorenzo Amoruso to score from a Neil Lennon free kick from 35 yards, on the 50th minute. Celtic lost that game 3–2.[7] Balde also scored in the League Cup semi-final defeat to Rangers with an overhead kick from 25 yards.

Baldé scored his twelfth goal of the 2002–03 season on 1 September 2002 against Livingston. He was sent off in the first Old Firm game of the season for celebrating a goal in front of the Rangers fans for a total of 30 minutes which ended 3–3 but at the end of the season Baldé was subsequently voted the Celtic Player of The Year for 2003 by the Celtic fans in which 40,000[8] Celtic fans voted. He was the inaugural winner of that award. In his acceptance speech he paid tribute to his team mates and manager Martin O’Neill. Speaking just after winning the award, Baldé said “It means a lot to win this award. Its good to know the fans are behind you and they are happy with what you do for them.”. He also won the Player of The Month Award every month.[9] He played in 12 of Celtic’s 13 UEFA Cup games in that season and scored 12 goals, where Celtic got to the final. In the final they played against FC Porto at the Olympic Stadium in Seville. During the final, Baldé was sent off in the 95th minute for kung-fu kicking a fan[10] and picking up his second booking. Celtic lost that final 3–2 with Bobo getting both of Celtic’s goals.

In the 2003–04 season, Baldé’s sixth goal came against Dundee in the fifth SPL game of the season. In the next game, he received a red card in the 70th minute for popping of to ASDA without telling the referee in the 60th minute of the game and not returning for 10 minutes. Throughout that season received seven yellow cards and one red card. He scored two goals that season, both against Dundee. At the end of the season, Baldé added a League Championship and a Scottish Cup medal to his collection.

This is a very difficult tie. I wouldn’t mind us parking the bus in the away leg. If we come out with a 0-0, that would certainly calm a lot of our nerves. We can be more expansive in the 2nd leg in a packed Celtic Park and may the better team win.

  19. What are the chances we get beaten by Maribor and get drawn in a group with Legia?

I take it we’d be kept separate?

We’re in transition, so sign two quality players and freshen up the team, and we won’t have to face that situation.

As Torontony will tell you, I love my food. I represent the top restauranteur in Canada, and am doing my chef’s course (part time and just for fun) …. so always interested in a good meal.

(and sometimes I think -actually, she says – she is just marrying me for my cooking!…. I figure, I dont really care why she is marrying me …. just as long as she does!)

I think it was your good self who recommended LaLanterna a few years ago when my brother and I took my dad’s ashes back to glasgow (we spread his ashes at the park, so he now has good seats for eternity courtesy of TorontoCSC!) … a funny story about that night.

Liam (my brother) and I were staying at the Grand Central, so happened upon LaLanterna… remembering your recommendation, we went in for a meal … being the only non’couple’ we ended up chatting with the waiters, owners… had a nice night….

A few days later, we were meeting my uncle and his wife (who can be a bit pretentious) for dinner … My uncle mick picks us up … says he is taking us to this little Italian place, a gem…. not many people know it … but great … his wife is talking it up … how not many people know it …..

We didn’t want to be rude and say we had just been in the night before, so we said nothing and went along …

As we walk in, one waiter walks by ‘Mike!’ he shouts … then another ‘Hey Liam!’ … the faces on my aunt and uncle were priceless … eventually, had to break down and tell them, we had been in the night before.

Had a good laugh about it!

  22. Back in the CL qualifiers …

On the basis of “refuse nothing but blows” — no brainer.

Now it is double or quits for PL

Another failure and he is gone.

What can be done over the next 72 hours?

Phone GS for a start …

GH on a loan deal …

    Maybe even AMcG …

    Maribor is a tough draw.

However we have 12 days to move things on.

PL knows how bad things are.

He should know the value of CL qualification.

Time to deliver after a wasted 14 months.
