Maribor slight favourites

2143

Celtic will face Maribor from Slovenia in the Champions League play-off round.  Maribor, of course, played a critical part in the death of Rangers, when they eliminated Ally MsCoist’s team from Europe a few months after Craig Whyte took over from Sir David Murray.  Having heard the 6-1 aggregate result against Legia, they are already celebrating the draw.

Maribor gave Wigan two hard games in last season’s Europa League, winning their home tie and causing the FA Cup holders more trouble than expected in England.  They progressed to the knock out round before going out 4-3 on aggregate to Sevilla – a feat Celtic would not have been capable of. Right now, they should be slight favourites.

If you missed it, today’s earlier article on Lady Luck, HMRC and money is here.

Join the Celtic Graves Society, Fergus McCann and many more at Kilsyth Cemetery on Saturday, 18 August, to commemorate the final resting place of the great Jimmy Quinn. Full details below or at Celtic Graves.

  1. Know what, we should just have sneaked Scott Brown on for the last 5 minutes…I mean just to be fair to Legia and their wonderful fans.

    Get a grip.

Their fans were awful, their players were divers in the first leg, and they fielded a suspended player because their admin is incompetent and now they want to claim that it was just human error, and please let us back in. Bollox.

They didn’t put the same player in their squad for the two St Pats games, so this is all about a series of calamitous administrative clangers.

They are incompetent and arrogant and now want the rules bent for them. Please let us back in mister, it wisnae us?

Does this not sound familiar to anyone?

Cheerio Legia, just try and play fair and stick to the rules and maybe we’ll see you next year.

As for Ronny.. sort out your team and stop flaffing about with positional experiments.

The team on Wednesday looked bereft of passion, ideas and purpose. That is most definitely down to you and your team.

I think Griffiths could score 20-30 in the SPL yes. If he is played as a penalty box striker. In my honest opinion though we need someone with more quality when it comes to European competition.

For all those sanctimonious holy willies who say we should ascend the moral high ground

Aul’hauns will remember that the year Inter Milan beat us on pens in the EC semi, they were pumped 7-1 in Germany by Borussia MG

They slapped in an appeal because somebody got hit with a glass Coke bottle. They got a replay out of it and qualified.

    Rapid Vienna?

UEFA might cause some irritation but they have rules and some other football governing bodies might want to follow their lead

  5. Does anybody know if the sub hadnt come on, would there be an offence as he was still part of the match day squad ?

Come on fella, lighten up. It’s been a relative Nike Friday and nobody for a moment is believing that all our problems splattered over these pages 24 hours ago have gone away.

But we’ve been given a reprieve, an opportunity to grasp and we’ve squeezed from somewhere a bit of feel good.

Why not enjoy the day. Plenty of proof points to be poured over in the coming weeks but I’m going to enjoy the moment.

    Disagree completely.

Uefa had no choice because the alternative was setting a hugely significant precedent.

They let Legia stay in the CL, and next month another team “accidentally” fields a suspended player. The group stages start to fall apart and fixtures become suspect and cue Armageddon..

As for Celtic, are we supposed to say “Actually, in the Corinthian spirit beloved of Bob Kelly, we don’t want to get back in by this route, so we refuse.”

We have spent the last 3 years complaining about the SFA/Deidco and rule bending and non compliance which worked against us. Now we want to sanction rule breaking which punishes us….

Maribor are the grim reapers, the club that finished OR off. This should be marked in some way.

Does the BT deal not bring in more for Champions League participation?

We still have the Wanyama income from last year to hit this years accounts? We can still sell our goalkeeper and use some if that money?

    SFTB,

fair point we shouldn’t bother then, it obviously won’t be worth it eh.

I think it’s very likely they would only be getting bonus from points they’ve secured as opposed to TV money.

  15. mullet & co

    I was confused by that.

I was puzzled as to why you wanted Swalex’s son in. I thought you were touting for a new manager. But I see that you mean Darren Fletcher. It would be great to see Darren in the hoops but he would be a gamble/ prospect signing in the same mould as Craig Gordon. He is a very good player who has had a serious illness and, while it is great to see him back, he will have lost a great deal of his edge during that time and he may not be able to recover it. He would still coast the SPFL but would he shine among our lot in Europe?

  16. No Pete, There wouldn’t have been an offence if he hadn’t come on. He needed to be in their squad to serve his suspension. I assume Efe was listed in our squad, if he wasn’t he won’t be eligible for next game.

  17. squire danaher on

    Petethebeat – YES

For them to have complied with the suspension without penalty, he should’ve been picked in their 25-man squad submitted to UEFA for the two St pats games and 1st leg v Celtic, and not selected – thereby giving the club 24 players to choose from

He was every bit prohibited from sitting on the bench as he was to take the field of play is how I read it

I think the point is he had to be on the squad list and not be used for his suspension to be technically fulfilled. That is what the club failed to do against St Pat’s. Being listed on the subs bench would be something different and I don’t know the answer to that.

  25. Putting the doom n gloom aside for a moment.. Some important positives to consider :

Players coming back from injury : broony + Forrest

More competitive games under our belt

More time for Ronny to get ideas across and people up to speed

The wrath of the fans surely a boot up the jacksey for players, management + all concerned

    A new signing or 2

    ……

All considered, hopefully things will improve

“fair point we shouldn’t bother then”

    A bit childish, no?

I stated clearly my preference to gamble on waiting to attract a better quality of incoming player by being able to offer them CL participation. That was my alternative. Far from a “don’t bother” approach, no?

If you buy now to make CL more likely, how much of your budget do you spend? 50% or all of it?

  29. Were all living in a dream world. It’s a complete injustice and we got humped over both legs?

We dont deserve to be playing this qualifier.

    It’s fact.

  30. I’d like to see Sanchez play through the middle against Maribor.

I’m sure he’s got more goals in him and is worth every penny we didn’t spend on him.
