McCoist at odds with hero Whyte

979

We all know Craig Whyte doesn’t get nearly enough credit for the wonderful job he is doing for Scottish football but his cause was not helped by rookie manager, Ally McCoist, who when asked today if Nikica Jelavic asked to leave Rangers said, “No he didn’t, not at all. I have a wonderful relationship with Nikica. He never said that.”

The Rangers manager then passed the buck onto the unfairly beleaguered club owner, telling STV, “We received a bid from Everton which Craig [Whyte] found acceptable. Therefore business was done.”

McCoist refused to take a manager’s responsibility for deciding who leaves the football club.  Craig Whyte made it clear to all concerned yesterday that Nikica Jelavic wanted to leave Rangers and there was no point keeping a player who didn’t want to be there.  Whyte needs the backing of everyone with the best interests of Scottish football at heart, including his manager.  The intrusive scrutiny he has been placed under in recent months will not help him achieve his objectives.

Whyte hasn’t put a foot wrong so far, we should all mind our own business and let him get on with his job. Eye on the prize, Craig.

  6. For the earlier posters re: Gerry McNee.

I apologise for delay in responding as, otherwise engaged. Now, i can only post what I believe to be true and, if that conflicts with earlier versions then, I hope we can agree to disagree and continue on a friendly level as hooped fans.

I was led to believe that, McNee asked McNeill if he felt that he should feel responsible for, Celtic losing the league to Aberdeen in 1980 because, McNeill sold prominent CH, Roddie MacDonald without properly replacing him. This led to Cetic losing a, 10 point lead to Alex Fergusons, Aberdeen. This discussion took place after our away game in the ECWC v’s Partizan Tirana.

Apparently, McNee was trying to make the point that, Willie Garner wasn’t a proper replacement for MacDonald and, that this managerial error of judgement had cost us the league in the, 19879-80 season and, almost cost us the Scottish Cup Final v’s the huns as, we had to play Mike Conroy at, CH with suspensions and injurie’s we weren’t properly covered. Luckily for McNeill, we won the 1980 riot final. But, McNeill felt uncomfortable with McNee’s range of questioning and, let himself down by asking McNee to go outside. For what it’s worth, as a Celtic fan, on this occassion I think McNee had a point and, McNeill knew it and acted like a ned. McNee it has to be said, did indeed have a point. I mean, even if MacDonald was getting on, surely he was better for Celtic’s remainder of the season than, Willie Garner ? WTF ?

I feel that, Garner came to Celtic purely for, cronyism reasons ?

I expect to be shot down for this next bit but, there were times when for me at least that, Gerry McNee knew more about Celtic than, Celtic knew about themselves !

Gerry McNee, a fellow hurting-Tim of the 90’s and, will always be remembered by this Celtic fan as, the guy who continued to highlight Celtic’s dreadful and, precarious plight during the 90’s whilst, the LL fawned over the Murray era at Ibrokes!

    Hail! Hail!

  7. TheOriginalSadiesBhoy,

I have known Gerry McNee for 50 years. I would agree with much of what you say. But I would be utterly amazed if he were a relation of Pat Crerand. I never ever heard him mention it, even in the days when he went to every game, home or away. Pat is from the Gorbals; Gerry is from Shettleston. (Mind you, he might be related through his wife, who comes from the sou’ side.)

McNee is like a lot of pundits, they think they know best. Name one commentator who has had success in their chosen field. Keevins, Young, Traynor, Delahunt, Gordon and the rest couldn’t make it their game yet they feel qualified to criticise managers and players!

The fact is that, with few exceptions, sports journalism in Scotland is populated by people who, by their own admission, can’t/don’t use the internet; read a balance sheet; distinguish between administration and liquidation; recognise a fact or an opinion; commentate impatially.

    ———————————————————————

My view on Sports ‘journalism’ in Scotland is:

These guys are all supporters of football. Some of them like the orcs, some us; others neither. They have not, with nary an exception, played the game nor added in any way to it. They leech from our game, not just their living, but the soul of it too – see article re Thommo.

I have respect for two Scottish sports journos: Britney and (somewhat strangely perhaps) Leckie. Both absolutely love the game. One has an intellect that understands the subtle nuances of almost everything that goes on in the game and the other really is a punter with a true love for what he does. The latter, Leckie, in my opinion has largely deceived himself into believing that the ills plaguing our game are as much our fault as the orcs – he continues to believe that the spend, spend, spend arms race was a choice on our part – it was to be honest though: a choice of necessity or destruction.

But the guy truly loves his football and if anyone ever gets the chance to talk to him about it, and not mention us or them, you’ll find a guy that is very passionate about our game – he feels it has been destroyed by the aforementioned spend, spend that enveloped several other sides in the 90s. It really puts his back up that we (Scottish football) has fallen so low. He also gives the impression that he’d be delighted for both Celtic and them if they were to help turn our collective (everybody’s) fortunes around in the game.

The former, Britney, I just really enjoy reading. I’ve never met him, but would like to. Like Leckie, he comes across as being a genuine supporter of the game irrespective of who he supports. I’ll always make time for anyone with a genuine interest.

The rest can go copulate themselves.

The ageing and pretty poor Roddie McDonald was replaced in a team that had Tom McAdam and Roy Aitken to play CB.

Willie Garner played what? 2 or 3 games for Celtic and Gerry was questioning Billy for “almost” losing a game.

Only problem was Billy not hitting him hard enough because he had to do it again to the bumptious boor.
