McGregor’s 50th game, Sky’s cabal of bitter losers

279

Last night’s game at Motherwell was Callum McGregor’s 50th appearance for Celtic and Scotland this season.  At this stage of an unrelenting career, I am continually looking for signs of fatigue.  Instead, Callum marked his half century with a display of industry, speed, insight and a spectacular goal.  On any other occasion, he would be Man of the Match.

But that award had to go to the incomparable Odsonne Edouard.  Odsonne terrifies defenders.  He seems to be able to attract groups of them, before weaving a way though.  The free kick goal, his second in successive games, will rightly make the highlights, but he is now so much more than just a goal scorer for Celtic.

In possession at the edge of the Motherwell box in the second half, when others would shoot, he had the coolness to roll the ball in front of the advancing Olivier Ntcham.  That vision is the sweet spot in football, a rare gift to cherish.  Most would be overcome with tunnel vision.  The finish was disappointing, but the build-up play is more evidence of what a special talent Odsonne is.

We kept a clean sheet thanks to Fraser Forster, but Motherwell were repeatedly gifted space and possession in dangerous areas in the first half.  I like the shape we deployed last night and think it is crucial to the play and results we have seen since the break.  More work is required if we are to avoid a potentially costly error.

Sky held their hands up and issued an apology to Celtic fans for broadcasting an accusation of racism on subtitles, where no such comments were made.  The climb-down happened shortly before kick-off, meaning it had significantly less shelf-life as a news story than their unashamedly predatory video against Celtic fans.

They did not even suggest they would take any meaningful remedial action, it looks like we have been invited to ‘get over it’.  After Kris Boyd going for Leigh Griffiths’ “mental strength”, they have a pattern of predatory behaviour that falls well short of necessary editorial standards.

From the outside, it looks like Sky’s Scottish football coverage is controlled by little more than a cabal of bitter losers.  Only their actions can change this perception.

I think because it will be Ofcom investigating and not the SFA or any body with Sevco sympathies. There are also issues of possible litigation against which orange sashes offer no protection.

I think the danger is not Orange sashes at OFCOM, Sky and BBC, but, Funny handshakes. We have seen many cases where the distressed brothers at Ibrox have been assisted by fellow freemasons in the police, judges and the media. I would think Ofcom, Sky and the BBC are similarly infected, As Salmond said “Rangers are an Institution”

The senior people at Rangers, SFA, SPFL and the Scottish media including print, radio and TV, I believe are all freemasons.

I know I am a paranoid Tim but remember, just because I am paranoid doesn’t mean the bastards aren’t out to get you.

Fairhill Bhoy and Voguepunter , people I know who have met Davie all echo what you said about Davie being such a fine man.

After the 1985 Cup Final when Davie and Tommy were letting disabled fans hold the cup and get their photos taken with both , still brings a lump to my throat. Both Tommy and Davie epitomised all that is so good about Celtic.

I was one of Maggie’s millions in August 1982. I could not find any job to apply for at my local job centre so I went over to the one in Paisley. I couldn’t believe it when I walked in, Davie Hay was waiting to be interviewed . I was in a state of shock seeing one of my Celtic favourites in a Jobcentre. I think he might have got the Motherwell job later that year.

Well said bout Davie Hay.a total gentleman and one I had the pleasure of sharing the sign of peace at midnight mass this year.

Hello again all you young rebels.

So pleased that our club are continuing the fight against Sky and

are determined to get the real culprits exposed in this scandal and

disgraceful slur against our club and it’s fans.

Lets hope it’s the start of a unification between board and supporters

or am i asking too much?

Watched a great documentary this early morning, for anybody who

likes this sort of history, maybe Corkcelt? as the main character in the

    program is from his hometown.

It’s on SBS and it’s called ..The Rise of The Irish in Australia.. and a

fascinating insight to early politics in Oz and how a Melbourne archbishop

Daniel Patrick Mannix fought for Irish independance.

    Have a look and enjoy.

  9. Did the BBC say that Michael Stewart had been dropped from Sportscene?

I know he wasn`t on it tonight but there are other possibilities for his non-appearance.

If he has been dropped, I hope someone more practical than i am will organise some form of protest.

  10. It’s probably just me but…..I don’t remember many goals scored direct from free kicks back in the 60/70s

    RESULTS FROM GAME #33 – MOTHERWELL 0 CELTIC 4 (EDOUARD(2), GRIFFITHS, McGREGOR)

We only know that there’s going to be a show and the Glasgow Celtic will be there. What a performance last night, 2nd half especially.

Looking at our league games in 2020, our sequence of scores have been 3-1, 3-0, 3-0 and then 4-1, 4-0 and…..? Get your 4-0 correct score bet on for next Wednesday’s visit from Hearts!

As you will see from the results below, 2 of our players really did excel themselves. So much so that we reach a new landmark for this wee competition – not just 1, but 2 players featured in every single email that was sent!! And both of them have smashed through the previous record of ‘most votes for a player’ which stood at 63. They deservedly both receive 5 points!

And I have another record to announce. The previous best ‘voter turnout’ was following our 2 – 0 defeat of Cluj on 3 October when 75 folk gave their opinions. But tonight I’m overjoyed to say that 78 people took the time to email their selections. Thank you so much.

The votes have been distributed as follows, with my own selections asterisked –

    Forster: 10

    Simunovic: 4

    Jullien: 0

    Ajer: 0

    Forrest: 3

    Brown: 6

    McGregor*: 78

    Ntcham: 17

    Taylor: 9

    Griffiths*: 29

    Edouard*: 78

    Christie: 0

    Klimala: 0

    Rogic: 0

Unused subs – Bain, Bolingoli, Elyannoussi, Welsh

So, the players receiving points for the Motherwell game are –

    Edouard – 5 points

    McGregor – 5 points

    Griffiths – 3 points

    Ntcham – 2 points

    Forster – 1 point

That leaves the overall table reading as follows –

    1st – Brown – 67 points

    2nd – Edouard – 60 points

    3rd – McGregor – 50 points

    4th – Christie – 38 points

    4th – Frimpong – 38 points

    6th – Jullien – 36 points

    7th – Forrest – 32 points

    8th – Ntcham – 28 points

    9th – Ajer – 22 points

    9th – Elyounoussi – 22 points

    11th – Forster – 21 points

    12th – Griffiths – 16 points

    13th – Taylor – 13 points

    13th – Bolingoli-Mbombo – 13 points

    13th – Bauer – 13 points

    16th – Rogic – 9 points

    17th – Hayes – 8 points

    17th – Elhamed – 8 points

    19th – Welsh – 4 points

    19th – Bitton – 4 points

    19th – Johnston – 4 points

    22nd – Bayo – 3 points

    23rd – Morgan – 2 points

    23rd – Robertson – 2 points

25th – Simunovic, Gordon, Klimala, Sinclair, Ralston, Arzani, Hendry, Dembele, Shved – all on 0 points

A wee extra postscript. In the 5 league games played in 2020 you have voted Odsonne Edouard as Man Of The Match in 4 of them. The exception being our home win against St Johnstone where he was 6th placed with a measly 10 votes 😉

So, having visited Hamilton and then Motherwell our tour of Lanarkshire moves on to Cumbernauld on Sunday to take on Clyde in the Scottish Cup.

    Hail Hail!

Fairhill bhoy, Davie had a great record as scout for us.

When was made assistant general manager to Jock Brown , he was who Wim Jansen dealt with and trusted. Wim was not keen on any dealings with Jock Brown. Davie was a football man which appealed to Wim. When Davie was removed from his job , it frustrated Wim greatly and was one of the reasons he never stayed, A friend of mine who used to work in the newspaper industry told me this.

Enjoy Eurodisney and I hope it Disney rain.

An Tearmann , thank you for your good wishes. I hope you and all your loved ones are well .

My dad was born in 1926 . He saw a lot of our most skilful as well as some of our hardest. He loved Davie’s ability as well as how hard but fair he was when tackling . Davie was equally as good in defence or in midfield.

I’m certain if He had not left , Davie would have been captain once Billy retired.

Good night all and sleep well.

  14. I would offer Michael Stewart a role in the PR department ,

canny see him holding back on some of the crap that has

  16. The silence is golden. A central part of their business strategy is controlling the media narrative by constantly shouting about something or other but here we are, with genuine, serious questions being asked about the clubs behavior, and they’re saying nothing

They’ve trashed the value of the only asset that could save them , who would invest in them now?

  17. DALLAS DALLAS

I agree with your dad, Davie was made to be captain of Celtic.

    Why he left?

Don’t know, was he pushed? was it because Big George his pal

was no longer at the club?

But i still can’t make up my mind whether he was a better fullback

or midfieder, but as regards the hardest Celt, maybe, but Jim Brogan

i still shudder at some of his tackles lol.

  18. I see David Hay has undergone a successful kidney transplant.

If you’re reading this portal, and why shouldn’t you David, I have a message for you.

As a successful recipient of a kidney 20 years ago, I can vouch that you have many more years ahead to enjoy your family, friends and of course Celtic.

Just keep taking the immunosuppressants. 👍

  22. My mate goes out with Davie Hay’s niece and she doesn’t know the esteem he is held in.

Dallas nearly stopped posting due to the lack of responses to his posts ( sorry J)

I think one of the best bits of CQN is when someone takes a minute to recognise a worthy post .

    Unfortunately GFTB- still posts regardless.

After the responses to his Silent Assassin post he might reach the zenith of ‘giddy’ tomorrow.

I should add he has given me his brief for the Jambos next Wednesday so I might be biased.

*I’ve posted this before and here it is again:

The 1912 pledge by ure-primrose of deidco to the craft allowed the active unionist and goatshagger, who politically aligned to the lol and vociferously expressed anti-Irish and anti-Catholic sentiments, to, along with the lonesome boatman, immediately start to recruit from the ranks of both ludges and not just players only but fans, business associates, tradesmen, clerks, accountants, policemen, judicial officers of the court and most importantly members of the media who would champion the cause of deidco quietly in some places and vocally from the terracing and stands.

Until the pledge they had won 5 ½ titles while we had 10. Until Jock arrived they added another 28 while we only 11. The fact that we are now at 50 and they’re 53 ½ is amazing.

The tentacles of the craft travel far and wide, how else would they get away with riots in Europe and “red hand” salutes in Jerusalem. Never, never forget the reformation may have started in Germany but it was at its calvinist strongest in Scotland and Switzerland.
