Morals and hypocrisy, McCoist nails it, then asks you to bend over

1156

Do you remember the early days of Celtic Quick News when one wit suggested this was a blog for accountants?  Our early years did a great deal to bring a wider understanding of accounts and finance to Celtic fans – which was a good thing.

Today your fan of Scottish football needs to know about more than the game and amortisation, a semester or two in law school is an enormous advantage.  We touch on legal matters here but last night I enjoyed reading the forensic analysis on the wonderful Duff and Phelps on the Web 3D Law blog.  It’s worth 10 minutes of your day, each day, the most recent blog especially.  I also assume you are all keeping an eye on the substantial thoughts on Paul McConville’s blog.  If not, I want to know why.

So much for accounts and the law, today I want to discuss philosophy with you.

When football-types talk about morality and hypocrisy they are usually worth listening to, if only for comedic value.  Anyone experiencing the Scottish media will not doubt that morality is subjective and chameleon in nature.  This question has exercised great minds for centuries, if only they had the benefit of our effervescent radio luminaries.
Despite being metaphorically surrounded by morally opportunistic hypocrites, Ally McCoist felt so secure in his demands for Rangers that he didn’t dodge the issue yesterday.

When asked if Rangers should be kicked out of the SPL he accepted it “might be the right thing to do morally and people will have their own opinions on it, with differences far and varied.

“There’s an argument the right thing to do is for Rangers to go down to the Third Division and that might be the case if it’s a Newco after liquidation.

“But is it the correct thing to do for Scottish football?  Probably not. Everybody’s got a dilemma and that’s why there are so many opinions on it.

“Whether people like it or not, Rangers and Celtic are different because of the size and magnitude of the two clubs.

“Supporters of other clubs and some Old Firm supporters say you can’t have rules for some clubs and not for others.

“In an ideal world, that would be 100 per cent correct. I would absolutely and totally agree with that.

“But the fact of the matter is we’re asking if it would be good for the rest of the SPL if Rangers went down to the Third Division? The answer has to be no.

“I don’t envy the people who have to make that decision. I can understand the hypocrisy of it but Rangers and Celtic are different.”

Rangers are different – no dispute about that, Ally.  Celtic are different again, but if it is hypocritical and morally wrong to provide support for these clubs which has never been extended to a smaller club, we cannot subvert our sport – and remember, the word SPORT implies that outcomes are determined on a level playing field – Rangers must be treated no differently than Gretna.

And just one correction for Ally: liquidation-and-phoenix would not see Rangers drop to the Third Division.  A Newco in the Third Division would not have dropped from anywhere, it would be a new company and new football team.  Rangers would, in these circumstances, go pop!

  1. This week’s utterings from the remnants of Ibrox, McCoist and Jardine, should put an end to any further talk of “the good of the game”.

I received a text today from a former respected poster, quoting a reliable source who said that not only are they going to be liquidated, but are also going to be expelledfromScottish football.

Perhaps this is what O.G. Was hinting at recently..

  2. Watching the CSKA v Spartak game, McGeady doing ok, strong rumours of him going to Sunderland next season according to the commentator.

I would take Craig Gordon, he is for free, just PL’s kind of player :>)

And it is still early days in the Marching Season.

  4. Let’s face it, McCoist is doomed whatever happens. Even if some nutter wins the €uromillions and rescues them, he’ll soon be out on his behind having been found out for the clueless manager he is.

Either he goes down with the ship, or they boot him overboard in the unlikely even that they get it afloat again.

I think Caldwell is the better example (change) and illustrates how you can get the absolute maximum from a player. Let’s face it he was not rated by our fans and he has gone on to really improve his game and I guess it is down to DIET and fitness level.

  18. This is the end of days for the huns

They will be liquidated at the end of the season at the very latest

What happens next is more difficult to predict

No doubt there will be some who want to start afresh but I’m not sure just how many will want to go along with a newco

Hopefully the so called “decent” bluenoses will form a new club that tries to leave all the sectarian bile and bigotry behind

If they were successful and emerged as a force in Scottish football in 4 or 5 years – then the game up here might really prosper

The time frame would allow the rest of the SPL clubs to put their own houses in order while allowing the reintroduction of young Scottish talent to the game

Personally I would relish a Glasgow derby without their sectarian poison

However I’m not holding my breath

    Lets just gub them tomorrow

  20. If we want the best team out there tomorrow, I’d keep the 3 man defence we had at Motherwell.

Neil Lennon’s big decision is what central midfield to pick. Ki, Brown, and Twardzik are injured, and Kayal is too soon back from injury to start.

The obvious two would be Vic and Ledley in a 4 man midfield/defence, but could last week’s 3-4-2-1 influence things? The three-man defence did very well, with Vic making frequent runs forward , one of which led to the first goal, while Paddy and Joe did brilliantly in central midfield. Up front was less successful until the appearance of Tony Watt, so changes would need to be made there.

The key decision, for this game – and next year – is where to play Wanyama. I believe he has all the makings of a class CB and should be given that role from now on. Whenever he has played there, he has been solid defensively and assured on the ball. Why scour the globe to unearth a CL quality CB when the answer is right on our own doorstep?

It would be risky to repeat the McCourt/Ledley central midfield with just a 2 man central defence behind them, and the Stokes/Hooper strike partnership has been malfunctioning for a while. Therefore, in my opinion, it’s a toss-up between a defensive 4-4-1-1, with Mcgeouch and Commons right and left, Sammi up front supported by McCourt (Hooper lacks the control and passing ability for this role, as seen last week) or a repeat of the 3-4-2-1, with changes up front.

I’d go for a 3-4-1-2, with Paddy and Joe in the middle, and Commons to feed a front two of Hooper and Sammi. Izaguirre was magnificent in the first half v Motherwell – have a feeling he’ll be the key man tomorrow – but I would try Matthews ahead of Cha this time. The Welshman possesses less pace, but is still quick, and has a better final ball.

  24. I get the feeling, not being close to the action, that our actual training methods may be good enough but I think we may not put enough emphasis on the monitoring of weight and fat levels. I have read a few times of Hooper and Commins meeting up to head off to Nando’s and the like and I think we could tighten that up and that could make the difference. I don’t think it is good enough to say that the levels are good enough for Scottish football. We should aim to get the maximum out of each individual ala McGeady and Caldwell examples.

  25. Afternoon all,

    Any Berlin Tims on?

Heading over to Berlin tomorrow (booked before the final fixture list came out) and I was looking for a bar or two I could visit?

I’ve had a look on Celtic Bars but I was hoping for some local knowledge.

Looking forward to them going “pop”
