Need to find edge to match United

935

Dundee United and Celtic will both have their minds on longer term outcomes than tomorrow’s Premiership game at Tannadice.  For Neil Lennon, it will surely be another opportunity to expose some of his development players to the rigors of first team action.  For Jackie McNamara this is a test before arguably their biggest game of the season, next week’s Scottish Cup semi-final.

United are six points off the pace in the neck-and-neck battle between Aberdeen and Motherwell in re Best of the Rest race but face both these teams at home before the end of the season.  United’s potentially bigger challenge are the home and away games against the champions.  Only the top three are guaranteed European football, so the potential of European revenue, added to the prize more differential (circa £100k per place) will sharpen minds.

For Celtic, the challenge will be to find the edge their opponents will have for tomorrow.  I’d look to Liam Henderson, and maybe a couple of his former development squad team mates for this.

We’re well accustomed the nationalist and xenophobic excesses of the UK media but Germany appears shocked at the two biggest selling UK dailies use of the word “schwein” to describe Bastian Schweinsteiger.  Anyone who grew up during the decades when war movies dominated our TVs will know the racial context loaded onto this particular term, as it was used in Germany in the 30s and 40s.

Bayern’s ban on the Mirror and Sun is an appropriate rebuff, safe in the knowledge that no Bayern fans will continue to consume news about their club from either newspaper.

They are debateable. I think they have just been put together for banter more than anything else.

On the subject of hitting it too well. I read an interview with Mark Hughes years ago. The interviewer was asking him how he honed his techniques when striking the ball and scoring such wonderful goals from all angles including volleys and half volleys. Hughes was very honest about it. He said the best invention in the modern game was the colourful goalie top. He said he could be running in most directions and out of the corner of his eye he could see this bright jersey and just smacked the ball as hard as he could in that general direction. Sometimes he got lucky and it went in and other times he didn’t. There was no great science to it and I assume he spent a great deal of time on his strength, fitness and general ball work but when it came right down to it Mark Hughes scored spectacular goals because he hit it well.

Kris Commons is probably as close to a Mark Hughes type striker of the ball that Celtic have. He hits it well. Players who shoot more will score more goals if they have a decent technique. It would be interesting if other goal scorers from range have a similar outlook as Mark Hughes or if they genuinely work on their volleys etc.

In fairness I think these types of players have a fair share of natural ability but they can sure hit it well. Maybe too well.

  6. Bom dia.

Final two games of Rnd 5 in the Libertadores last night:-

    U.Chile (Chi) 0 Cruzeiro (Bra) 2

Cruzeiro desperately needed a result here and secured it quite comfortably in the end. Goals from Bruno Rodrigo and stand out Paraguyan defensive midfielder, Miguel Samudio (who was red carded near the end) were enough to secure this.

La. U in front of a 55,000 home crowd, will look back on several missed opportunities by striker, Patricio Rubio.

Cruzeiro now needing to win at home in the last game against Real Gacilaso (which they should) and hope that Defensor take full points from La U.

    Santa Fe (Col) 1 Atletico-MG (Bra) 1

Galo only needed a point here and that’s what they came away with. Thanks to Ronaldinho and, principally, keeper Victor who had an outstanding night.

Galo took the lead early (7 mins) in the first half with a well placed strike from Guilherme and then Santa Fe pummelled the Galo goal, or as the Colombian paper put it “they decided to conquer or die”, and were rewarded with a Cuero headed equalizer, mid way through the second half. However, that was as far as they got.

Unbeaten (although they’ve drawn three times) so far, Galo are now qualified and underlined they are still serious contenders in this competition. Santa Fe must now win their last game (away to Nacional, Paraguay) and hope Galo beat Zamora at home.

Final round games are next week, current standings of each group here:-

Not up to speed on the cricket but there is a cracking article on Baseball that reckons the batters (not sure if that term is correct) see the ball quicker.

I believe Brown gives both Henderson and Griffith’s a lift to training.

Read a wee bit about Garry O’Connor today at Morton. What a waste of talent. 30 years old and toiling at that level. I hope Leigh has more brains than that. He looks better than Stokes, O’Connor and Riordan. A proper front man who seems to love scoring goals. There is nothing worse than a player who doesn;t celebrate. I always looked at Kris Boyd and wondered why he was angry when he scored. He seems to have mellowed and smiles more now but Griffiths has a genuine grin when he scores. I like that. Players should enjoy it. Even when I scored up the park playing football with my mates I celebrated like it was a cup final winner.

Griffiths is in good hands with a gaffer like Neil. His man management seems to be excellent.
