Dundee United and Celtic will both have their minds on longer term outcomes than tomorrow’s Premiership game at Tannadice. For Neil Lennon, it will surely be another opportunity to expose some of his development players to the rigors of first team action. For Jackie McNamara this is a test before arguably their biggest game of the season, next week’s Scottish Cup semi-final.
United are six points off the pace in the neck-and-neck battle between Aberdeen and Motherwell in re Best of the Rest race but face both these teams at home before the end of the season. United’s potentially bigger challenge are the home and away games against the champions. Only the top three are guaranteed European football, so the potential of European revenue, added to the prize more differential (circa £100k per place) will sharpen minds.
For Celtic, the challenge will be to find the edge their opponents will have for tomorrow. I’d look to Liam Henderson, and maybe a couple of his former development squad team mates for this.
We’re well accustomed the nationalist and xenophobic excesses of the UK media but Germany appears shocked at the two biggest selling UK dailies use of the word “schwein” to describe Bastian Schweinsteiger. Anyone who grew up during the decades when war movies dominated our TVs will know the racial context loaded onto this particular term, as it was used in Germany in the 30s and 40s.
Bayern’s ban on the Mirror and Sun is an appropriate rebuff, safe in the knowledge that no Bayern fans will continue to consume news about their club from either newspaper.

I liked Guppy. He knew his limitations and rarely tried to beat an opposition full back with trickery or pace.
Instead he had developed the ability to knock the ball to his left hand side just before crossing the ball. In effect this gave him a yard of space which he used to great effect.
Thanks TonyD
I thought he had shorter hair then. I seem to remember a more severe crew cut.
Tommy Livingstone was an ex-St. Bartholomew’s and St. Maggie’s bhoy who played in goal for the reserves. Ended up a Gardai in Ireland, I heard.
I Know pat mcginleys got a garage in brucefield ind estate Livingston, were is his place in Bathgate

Davie Provan was the best crosser of a moving
ball I’ve seen in my 40 plus years of watching
the Celtic……I beg to be corrected.

I think there is a fine line to be honest. I remember when we signed Riordan to use an example. Cracking wee player. Scored good goals. Had good attributes on the pitch not so good off the pitch. He came into the team at Celtic and did fairly well but didn;t fill out. I used to compare him to Maloney. Both smallish players and both had good skills and technique but Shaun started to work on his upper body early and it showed. Players were bouncing off him. He had been coached and probably advised differently to Derek so had McGeady. What annoyed me most about Riordan was that he didn;t seem to care. He got a lot of chances at Celtic but his attitude was all wrong. He didn’t seem to want to work for it.
Whether they are tall or small you have to work on the training ground and the gym and eat and drink the right foods away from the game.
Looking at other sportsman like Andy Murray for instance they don;t have many days off where they eat and drink what they want. They are comitted. Footballers seem to think they don;t have to be. Never quite understood that.

Marrakesh might remember Tommy. He will have played, maybe, with his wee brother, Andy.

That is how I remember Guppy’s trick too. It brought home to me Super Sutton’s point about the difficulty of crossing at speed, a problem for both Agathe and Aiden McGeady.
Guppy solved that problem by being slow.

Oh am I on holiday??? :-)))
Cheers big fella are you making the 10th May?

Yep – some players think they have ‘made it’ when they’re 17. A particular problem in Scotland outwith one or two clubs.
There are some who even starred in the Champions League and still didn’t ‘make it’ due to bad decisions/advice and getting too big for their boots(Liam Miller) at a young age.
I hope the example he set is used for years to come for young players and others who think they can hold us to ransom.

I believe Millers head was turned by Keane on the instruction of SAF. I think Roy being the man he is came to Celtic to make up for that. If Liam Miller had stayed one more season he would have got his move and Man Utd could have afforded the money to buy him. It was very underhand and at that time robbed us of the most exciting prospect we had in years. I was annoyed with the lad because we had nursed him for a few years with injuries and had invested a lot in him through coaching and treatment. Such is the nature of the game though and I do believe it must be hard to knock back not only the wages but the chance to play for Manchester United. Keane was a huge influence though being a fellow Cork man I reckon. Some on here may be better informed than me but that is the way I read the situation. Two games in particular stood out for me with Miller. Rangers at Ibrox when Miller bullied internationalists all over the pitch and didn;t give them a second on the ball. He dominated that midfield and Lyon at home when he looked like a European veteran when we ran out I think 2-0 winners on the night.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing and his career never really took off but what would have happened if he had stayed at Celtic another year or two? We will never know but I think the young players directly after him learned from his mistake. Liam Miller may have been the greatest youngster we never had.
Don;t even get me started on Feruz!
LB
Re Steve Guppy, he was slow right enough but he was so good at bending his crosses round his marker and into the box that he didn’t need to get past the defender.
Better in some ways than a full back whose pace gets him past the defender but the cross is often poor because he’s going at full tilt.
Cheers HT i got it,bout the real hero.ta

I’m totally behind the idea of openness and Wiki-leaks as one of the tools of doing that but I think it’s becoming apparent that despite his claims to the contrary much of what JA does and doesn’t do is fueled by his own self interest.

Someone yesterday posted a response they got from the SFA regarding Sevco licence. I have trawled the blog today looking for it without success. Anyone able to point me to it? Thanks!
