Neither club has imperative to do Griffiths deal

953

When an unexpected name flies into the frame from left field there’s always a concern about what you’ve written about him before.  I still remember the day we signed Kenny Miller, and an earlier blog with my assessment of the player (subsequently found to be on the money).  While it’s important to be fair when assessing players, I’m not in the business of trashing them before they kick a ball for Celtic, so Miller’s signing was not a comfortable one.

With this in mind, I typed “Leigh Griffiths” into the articles database to check what had been written.  Apart from match reports, there was only one comment, the day after last season’s Scottish Cup Final:

“Leigh Griffiths has had plenty of uncomplimentary discourse written about him this season, most of it deserved, so it should be recorded that he was the first Hibs player to return applause in the direction of Celtic fans yesterday, closely followed by his team-mates.

“This is the way football should be. For too long our game has been poisoned by the unique kind of rivalry you got in Scotland. More of the same, please.”

He unquestionably did deserve the criticism that came his way last year.  If he gets his move to Celtic he needs to grow as a person, as well as a player, which is a big challenge.  His move towards the Celtic support at Hampden was a modest but necessary first step towards reassessing other people.

Having said this, don’t go ordering your ‘Griffiths’ shirt just yet, I reckon a deal has no more than a 50% chance of happening.  Wolves didn’t invite our interest and our need is to be ready by June, not February.  Neither club has an imperative to do this deal, which is often an omen for snags to get in the way. Patience required, as you know………

Reminder to everyone who booked tickets for the CQteN St Patrick’s Day Dinner that they have to be paid by this Friday! Let me know if you can’t find details, celticquicknews@gmail.com

I think we could have 7 forwards competing for 3 positions, and all 7 getting equal game time, through different starting line ups and use of forward subs.

It’s got to be Stokes and or Sami….both in my opinion offer little in terms of real goal threat, KC has filled that role and plays further up the park than both. Sami who I have liked despite some poor performances in the SPFL was great in Europe, but seems out of sorts now. Stokes has reverted to type after winning a new contract, playing out wide, shooting when other players are in better positions and generally playing in a huff.

I watched the video and read the material on your link.

The first thing that surprises me is that this Parliamentary Committee is comprised of 7 people, 6 of whom are middle-aged males. Not very representative of society as a whole, and goes against the normal Scottish Government and Scottish Parliament practice to achieve gender balance wherever possible.

I thought that the contributions of Chic Brodie, Angus McDonald and Jackson Carlaw were skewed, spiteful and biased. They used misleading terminology – such as saying that you were “abandoning the petition” when you have done no such thing; you have withdrawn it at the time being given the concerns that you have raised with the Committee around getting a fair hearing and having the information/ evidence that supports your petition presented in a complete and balanced format.

John Wilson was the only who seemed in any way open-minded and balanced to me.

I’m worried that once the title is tied-up – we could be looking at crowds circa 20-25K for our final home games (post split).

  8. So many times I have read how important it is financially for Celtic to make it through the qualifying rounds to the group stages of the Champions League.

It has also been outlined how much of an achievment it was to qualify last year given the results achieved by those teams we overcame in their Europa league games.

Surely the club should be making certain we secure a striker with a little bit of pedigree in this window to ensure he is well settled in as a Celtic player in order to give the club the best possible chance of qualification come the qualifiers.

Personally I hope someone does as then our seteemed manager might actually begin to have a look at some others in our squad and give them extended game time. I honestly believe he wants this unbeaten run on his Celtic CV, this is to the detriment of the overall developement of the team, IMO of course.

Lenny would be no diff. Than any other coach wanting that on his CV.

Same as MON wanted that EUFA Cup Win on his.

We have been told for long enough that prep for the qualifiers is paramount, and yet we are grubbing about trying to sign a player with excess baggage.

We loaned out a player with a supposed attitude problem, and a looking to pay money for one with baggage, it doesn’t make sence.

I don’t doubt the boy has ability, but, and always the but, can he cut it at a higher level ?

I have no idea, but the policy is flawed.

We have done good with CB’s and middys, granted, but we sell them, VvD will be next along with big Fraser, so there is no continuity in the team, Lenny is getting torn apart, he can’t plan past the next window, how in gods name is he going to build when he has to deal with crap like that.

IMO, and it’s only my opinion, we are getting lied to, they have no intention of planing for any kind of stability, it’s all about buying cheap and selling for profit, and they are prepared to waste millions on dross in the hope they find another gem.

No planing for the future, all short term gain.

    Tell me I am wrong.

As they are already Celtic players they can sign extentions to exsisting contracts at any time.

  13. Watched highlights of Reading game. Le Fondre hat trick and very Hooperesque in its application (if it’s a Hooper clone that we are looking for).

  14. eddieinkirkmichael

Remember MON being on an unbeaten run – it’s that unimportant now that I can’t remember if it was in all fixtures in the league or at home games?

We had won the league and it was post split – MON went with the tried & trusted at CP and we lost to Dundee.

So much for the record – I was annoyed at the time (when we lost) but its importance in relation to what MON did at the Club is completely lost on me now!

Thought provoking question, but since they are our players and under contract till summer, think we could lengthen contracts at any time?

TyroneTim & TET you’re bang on the money there, we are set to enter the qualifiers & unless we sign a proven striker then we are gambling & leaving all to chance again. If we don’t qualify then its goodbye to £21m+ CL money & the implications are that we will have to sell some players & crowds will dwindle further. Over to Pedro & the Absentee Landlord to sort out!!!

The Celtic Bored mandate. Im tellin ye..lookin more and more like it with every transfer window.

Wonder what the huns are daein.

(..now more like CL if yer lucky..who cares anyway..)

(canny wait for that team __________ (enter Tim palpable label here) are back)

  21. The CL is what it’s all about. Guaranteed qualifiers for a few seasons. Failure to qualify, however, means co-efficient failure and consequent additional qualification challenges.

Are NL and PL seriously saying that Leigh Griffiths is the height of our ambition? He’s a good player no doubt and has the potential to improve no doubt. However, in terms of CL, he is, wait for it, ANOTHER PROJECT, no doubt.

We need proven quality at a high level. Proven. Our striking purchases have, Hooper excepted, largely been consistently unsuccessful. The project policy in the striking department has failed. It’s a dead parrot. It ought to be abandoned not only to improve the on pitch product, but also to protect the financial position of the club. Throwing £2m here, £1.5m there, in combination with wages represents a false economy when weighed against a “proven” policy.

The last two seasons prove the value of a proven policy.

    HH Oscar!!

  22. paolosboots

This is where I don’t understand the policy.

It’s as plain as the nose of yer face that money is the god with the suits, and yet they gamble big time.

So far it has paid off, and fair play to Lenny and the players for that, cos it’s down to them and not the suits.

What happens if we fail next season to get into the group stages ?

    meltdown me thinks.

Is it worth the gamble, not in a life time, we have money, we can spend a few bob on a couple of quality players that will at least give us an edge in qualification, but no, keep the money in the bank and hope.

    Just doesn’t make any sence.
