Neither club has imperative to do Griffiths deal

953

When an unexpected name flies into the frame from left field there’s always a concern about what you’ve written about him before.  I still remember the day we signed Kenny Miller, and an earlier blog with my assessment of the player (subsequently found to be on the money).  While it’s important to be fair when assessing players, I’m not in the business of trashing them before they kick a ball for Celtic, so Miller’s signing was not a comfortable one.

With this in mind, I typed “Leigh Griffiths” into the articles database to check what had been written.  Apart from match reports, there was only one comment, the day after last season’s Scottish Cup Final:

“Leigh Griffiths has had plenty of uncomplimentary discourse written about him this season, most of it deserved, so it should be recorded that he was the first Hibs player to return applause in the direction of Celtic fans yesterday, closely followed by his team-mates.

“This is the way football should be. For too long our game has been poisoned by the unique kind of rivalry you got in Scotland. More of the same, please.”

He unquestionably did deserve the criticism that came his way last year.  If he gets his move to Celtic he needs to grow as a person, as well as a player, which is a big challenge.  His move towards the Celtic support at Hampden was a modest but necessary first step towards reassessing other people.

Having said this, don’t go ordering your ‘Griffiths’ shirt just yet, I reckon a deal has no more than a 50% chance of happening.  Wolves didn’t invite our interest and our need is to be ready by June, not February.  Neither club has an imperative to do this deal, which is often an omen for snags to get in the way. Patience required, as you know………

Reminder to everyone who booked tickets for the CQteN St Patrick’s Day Dinner that they have to be paid by this Friday! Let me know if you can’t find details, celticquicknews@gmail.com

You’re opening up a circular argument. What does proven, high level quality cost? Let’s say a minimum £8M (don’t quote Finbogasson price, Eredevisie isn’t high level any more). What if super striker picks up a training injury pre-qualifiers and we don’t make it? We’ve lost the CL money and we’ve spent the money and we’re saddled with his no doubt higher wages.

I don’t believe the board are 100% spending highly but they are 100% risk averse. They will never go to for a high budget target unless they have his fee and entire contract in the bank.

TET & Dexte, Maggie McGill, we are all singing off the same hymn sheet. The policy seems to have worked for the rest of the team but the forward line needs money spent on a proven goalscorer preferably from Europe. I can’t understand with all the money spent on scouting etc that our whole sum of targets has whittled down to LG!!! As tet says we will experience meltdown & as Maggie says is the whole sum of our ambition waiting till a dead time morphs its way to the top? I wrote earlier that ive never felt as big a connect since the old board was removed. What we have now is a plc not fc & you can see that by the mealy mouthed apology to fans for inconvenience of moving St Johnstone match, not good enough!!! particularly when our Irish fans have spent more following the team & traveling to matches to be shabbily treated why would they buy season tickets? The PLC will take us for granted too many times & lack of investment in the team will be the final straw imo.

It’s the lies, we were told that CL was the goal, and yet we are not doing anything like getting to that goal.

The argument that players don’t want to come to scotland is bollix imo, pay them and they will come, wages in europe are dire in comparison to what we can and will pay.

There is no ambition, make a few bob here and there, keep the balance sheet in the black seems to be the goal.

  7. When was the last time we came anywhere close to spending £2.5M on a defender before VvD? To me that shows that we are upping our spending levels in each area of the team.

If the right player is available and we believe £6M is the right price we’ll spend it. Unless your calling NL a liar.

I was talking about the unbeaton run in the league hampering us and now I re-read what I wrote I see how what I said is confusing lol. I really don’t want us getting beat by anyone but thinking about it, it may not be a bad thing if you get the gist of my earlier post.

Celtics clean sheet league record is 13 games in 1915. So far Celtic (Lenny and FF especially statistically) are on 10. I think.

  10. The club are in a position now where anything but CL football results in a loss. They have a choice they can try and put a team together that all but guarantees CL football, or they can trim the costs so that we’re back to break even in the EL.

It’s not a decision I’d like to make personally. Both are tremendously risky in my opinion.

  11. Eddie,

I know what you are getting at.

Ideally I’d love to see the run continue but balde, pukki and Stefan getting plenty of game time.

And a few of the young guns too.

  12. weeminger

I don’t know if that was meant for me, but Lenny will do his masters bidding at all times.

He never said we would spend 6 mill on a player, and I will eat myself if PL ever sanctioned anything like 6 mill on a player, it’s just not going to happen, for a start it would bust the wage ceiling, cause disruption in the camp.

There are players out there for way less than 4-5-6 mill who can score goals, we seem to be obsessed with players who can’t score goals.

    I would never call Lenny a liar btw >}

Tet you are right we ve seen this movie loads of times before. We laugh at the hun gullibles and jack irvine spouting spoof our board are no different a few sound bites and are we any different? Weeminger I hope you are right but a blind man can see our strikers are shooting blanks!!!

Also we are a shop window for epl and are one if 32 teams in cl group stage with all the players around Europe arr you trlling me lg id the dole sum of iur scouting endeavours?

It wasn’t. Your’re right he said we could, which of course doesn’t necessarily mean we would but it’s inferred. So yes I’ll admit saying we would never spend £6M isn’t actually calling NL a liar.

  16. eddieinkirkmichael on

Facundo Ferreyra, scored 16 last term and is still only 22, if you want to go for another project.

  18. paolosboots FC before PLC on

Eddie good point wtf are we doing so? Im beginning to feel that we have no ambitions outside Scotland, thats fine but at least the board could be honest with us and let us make up our own minds . Very poor communication coming out of the club as usual.

  19. weeminger

See if by some quirk of fate we manage to pull something out of the fire before the window closes I will be over the moon, but I doubt it will happen, sadly.

We will just have to go with what we have, and I also reckon that we will have to go with less than we have presently.

A half decent bid for a VvD and big Fraser will see them gone, and any other decent bids will see any amount of our squad gone as well.

I am talking about summer bids, and Lenny will have the same probs of getting players in.

Lenny is doing a wonderful job under those constraints imo.

He might even be gone as well, that would bother me.

I know what you mean, I actually am now thinking if Sunderland are after this guy Ignacio Scocco, did Poyet scout him or was he offered around to other clubs? Lenny said today he just missed out on someone, could it have been him?
