Neither club has imperative to do Griffiths deal

953

When an unexpected name flies into the frame from left field there’s always a concern about what you’ve written about him before.  I still remember the day we signed Kenny Miller, and an earlier blog with my assessment of the player (subsequently found to be on the money).  While it’s important to be fair when assessing players, I’m not in the business of trashing them before they kick a ball for Celtic, so Miller’s signing was not a comfortable one.

With this in mind, I typed “Leigh Griffiths” into the articles database to check what had been written.  Apart from match reports, there was only one comment, the day after last season’s Scottish Cup Final:

“Leigh Griffiths has had plenty of uncomplimentary discourse written about him this season, most of it deserved, so it should be recorded that he was the first Hibs player to return applause in the direction of Celtic fans yesterday, closely followed by his team-mates.

“This is the way football should be. For too long our game has been poisoned by the unique kind of rivalry you got in Scotland. More of the same, please.”

He unquestionably did deserve the criticism that came his way last year.  If he gets his move to Celtic he needs to grow as a person, as well as a player, which is a big challenge.  His move towards the Celtic support at Hampden was a modest but necessary first step towards reassessing other people.

Having said this, don’t go ordering your ‘Griffiths’ shirt just yet, I reckon a deal has no more than a 50% chance of happening.  Wolves didn’t invite our interest and our need is to be ready by June, not February.  Neither club has an imperative to do this deal, which is often an omen for snags to get in the way. Patience required, as you know………

Reminder to everyone who booked tickets for the CQteN St Patrick’s Day Dinner that they have to be paid by this Friday! Let me know if you can’t find details, celticquicknews@gmail.com

  1. Morning

Not been on for a long time. Trying to deal with a family illness and not coping very well.

I read this interesting wee snippet.

‘Fresh questions surround the Norwich future of Celtic target Robert Snodgrass, however, after he was embroiled in an ugly confrontation with his own supporters.

Keen to quit Carrow Road to join his boyhood idols Snodgrass lost his temper after supporters sarcastically applauded one of his corners, yelling ‘f*** off’ in response. Norwich fans immediately called for the introduction of substitute Nathan Redmond.’

  3. Morning folks

Re the moving of the St Johnston game, just another wee thing. Myself and the blonde one had booked lunch on the Sunday for ourselves and close friends to celebrate his 60th birthday, in the Kerrydale suite.

Got an email yesterday to phone Celtic park regarding it.

Not going to jump the gun but, was one of the few days we could manage and the surprise looking like its going to be spoilt.

Simple and silly wee thing but another example of effects of these short notice moves

The one who is messing about the fans is you mate!!

All that money wasted on non scoring project strikers and when a guy with a record of scoring goals is available for 1m you take the p@@@ as he might not be an financial asset later

Only having a bit of fun due to the quiet nature of the blog, agree with what you wrote in principle but I am starting to look seriously at our ability to get a deal done. This window has been open for 29 days so far, why do we always wait until the last minute to see if we can squeeze a deal through, if we sign Leigh Griffiths then I will give him my support but why not get the job done mid window. The mess surrounding the attempted signing of Lee Tomlin last window was an embarrassment, not to mention the window that gave us Miku and Lassad on the last day or two, we have professional people running that part of the business and if we are honest with ourselves, we don’t always look professional towards the end of these windows.

  8. That means Celtic have are four more league games away from creating history.

But Lennon admits: “It’s another record to go for. Mind you as soon as we concede one we’ll get slaughtered!

“To have ten clean sheets in a row is very special. Not many teams go through a series like that.

“But I don’t want people taking it for granted — it’s a hard thing to do.”

    ———————————–

Ohhhhhhhh I’ve been saying it for two weeks Lenny , the amount of people waiting on that goal going in is incredibly getting bigger by the day, even in here, for one stupid reason or an other, and you should read the pathetic reasons why, beggars believe, MSM,LURKING HUNS, GIRUYs.

  9. If we really want Leigh Griffiths he will be a Celtic player by Friday night. All that’s happening just now is a bit of horse trading, we offer £450k they want £1.25m, but we the likelihood is they will settle somewhere in-between with a few add-ons. It happens in every transfer negotiation, the big difference here is that its become public knowledge from the Wolves side. Wonder why? Could it be they know they have a player who wants to leave to a certain club but are trying to start an artificial bidding war with other teams who see a low, probably under valued, bid come in for him? Celtic on the other hand know he wants to come home to Scotland and we are the only team who can afford his wages so are trying to get him cheaper than his value.

As someone who often criticises PL, on this occasion he is quite right to start with a cheeky low bid given the circumstance. He’ll be a Celtic player come Friday night and making his debut v St Mirren on Sunday for a price less than Wolves want for him.

  10. 16 roads - Wee Oscar the Celtic warrior. on

I don’t see why the club should be in a rush to sign any new players,at this particular moment in time… what with the league title more or less secured.

We should have more than enough firepower to win the Scottish Cup.

  11. SydneyTim – you were chastising the club for LG being the height of our ambition but now you’re suggesting we jump in and meet Wolves’ fee at first bid, because he’s a goal-scorer.

Either he’s good enough and we should meet the price asked to secure him (your view) or he’s not good enough and we shouldn’t be wasting money on him, and going for a better signing (er also your view).

It’s about getting players bedded in prior to our very early CL qualifiers.

  13. Weeminger. It’s all about opinions that’s why we are here :))

A.My view is to have one big wage striker who can score goals up to 7m and 30-40k a week if he can

    We can afford it

Then back him up with your watts youths etc

Not have variety of duds as we have

But!!! I know that will break the PL policy so it won’t happen

B .So we need to look at your mays and griffifths type of player Players who have scored goals( unlike pukki Balde ) and bring them in to see if they can step up

    I would prefer A but B is 2nd option

The C is of course the project shambles that we have been doing. Eg pukki. Balde bungera

And we must stop C as it has given us zero goal scoring strikers

Just my opinion of course :)$))

Very interesting A.B.C. 7.30 report just finished.

Gerry Adams trip to Oz mentioned .

  19. I think that changing a fixture for a game with just over two weeks for it to be played is something you would expect from a bunch of guys running a pub league.

And then of course when you look at who is running our game here in this little back water of a country, then you can understand why things like this shouldn’t happen, but they do, and it’s not the first time and it won’t be the last.

I understand that it is hard to get big tv contracts here, I get that honestly I do, but surely when we have these people sitting down discussing these contracts someone at some point should have said, we will meet every month for date and change of game times, because you have to understand we have a duty to supporters of the SPFL game and we have to give them at least a months notice.

To treat football fans the way they are treating them now is Disscusting, they seem to be more interested in a new team who have just joined the SFA/SFL and are making the game here a pantomime, and the SMSM just sit there and say nothing, as they are on the same bus with the SPFL,SFA, things like this will soon change not right away, but hopefully sooner rather than later, these game KO changes affect every season ticket holder in the game here in Scotland, but as usual only one set of fans will complain, US, all club fans are involved here, time for an SPFL fan association? Never gonny happen.
