Neither club has imperative to do Griffiths deal

953

When an unexpected name flies into the frame from left field there’s always a concern about what you’ve written about him before.  I still remember the day we signed Kenny Miller, and an earlier blog with my assessment of the player (subsequently found to be on the money).  While it’s important to be fair when assessing players, I’m not in the business of trashing them before they kick a ball for Celtic, so Miller’s signing was not a comfortable one.

With this in mind, I typed “Leigh Griffiths” into the articles database to check what had been written.  Apart from match reports, there was only one comment, the day after last season’s Scottish Cup Final:

“Leigh Griffiths has had plenty of uncomplimentary discourse written about him this season, most of it deserved, so it should be recorded that he was the first Hibs player to return applause in the direction of Celtic fans yesterday, closely followed by his team-mates.

“This is the way football should be. For too long our game has been poisoned by the unique kind of rivalry you got in Scotland. More of the same, please.”

He unquestionably did deserve the criticism that came his way last year.  If he gets his move to Celtic he needs to grow as a person, as well as a player, which is a big challenge.  His move towards the Celtic support at Hampden was a modest but necessary first step towards reassessing other people.

Having said this, don’t go ordering your ‘Griffiths’ shirt just yet, I reckon a deal has no more than a 50% chance of happening.  Wolves didn’t invite our interest and our need is to be ready by June, not February.  Neither club has an imperative to do this deal, which is often an omen for snags to get in the way. Patience required, as you know………

Reminder to everyone who booked tickets for the CQteN St Patrick’s Day Dinner that they have to be paid by this Friday! Let me know if you can’t find details, celticquicknews@gmail.com

  5. Good morning all, wet and windy in the Farthing Downs this morning.

On the Lee Griffiths topic, I remember at the end of the season when he was due to leave Hibs and go back to Wolves, there was a lot of comment then regarding us putting a bid in for him and general disappointment when we didn’t sign him, a lot of people thought it was a chance missed.

    Better late than ever! Eh?

  6. What’s with Lee Wallace – is he the Mother Theresa of football helping one sick and dying club after another…?

I think we should table an offer.. He could be a god send for us at LB should anything happen to Izzy…

As you say, every True supporter wants every Celtic player to be a success, why not ?

I sit in section 106 North Stand and have to listen to morons at every game.

Whatever player is getting stick, I will them on to have a good game. Is that not what we want ? I have to bite my tongue sometimes listening to so called fans of Celtic, but once the big guy behind me called Samaras a W***** , I had to tell him, ” There is only one W***** here, and its not Sammi”. Surprisingly, he appologised, and I never heard him abuse him again.

I despair at some players performances sometimes, but I would never abuse them, I would rather encourage them to do better.

  10. So what the sleekit one is saying, is lee wallace has become a 600,000 pound better player by playing in the bottom 2 leagues in Scottish fitba!.

    Lol

    Big sean.

With the exception of Tebily I have always tried the carrot rather than the stick. Fella beside our seats at Celtic Park must have been cuckolded by SAMMI.

That can be the only reason for the abuse he gives out, regardless of what everyone else can see.

We just rip the hell outa him now. It disnae stop him,but at least he effs off early!

  12. Henrik Larsson…. 26 goals in 101 games for Feyenoord (league)….. 7.5 goals average per season….

    Henrik Larsson…. 3,000,000 goals in 221 games for Celtic…..

Wasn’t exactly prolific at his previous club and not what you’d call a “goalscorer” although he scored for fun in Sweden prior to that (73 in 120 games)

Now…. if you saw what he did for us coming then give yourself 50 CQN points.. you SHOULD be scouting for Celtic…….

    Right club, right environment……………

  13. Sidney Tim.

    I get it now.

Living in Oz you are a day ahead of the UK and blessed with incredible foresight you must be at least 6 months ahead.

So can you send me the UK lottery winning numbers for the next 6 months or does your prophetic gift only work in Oz?

    That would explain your frustration.

Might as well contribute something useful as opposed to irritating.

  15. A problem I have with posters who are almost exclusively negative is that when they are proven wrong, their, ” I hold my hands up. I was wrong.” admission takes all of one line. Their negative posts have been in the hundreds but somehow they think a one line admission make up for all the nonsense they had previously spouted. Not only that, they somehow manage to make their `apology` seem praiseworthy.

I don`t know if CQN is any less accommodating of contrasting views than it was but I am certain there is more ill informed, bombastic, arrogant nonsense posted from what I can only surmise are very needy personalities.

  16. When the CL qualifiers come round in mid July, we will probably be several players short of a full complement for various reasons.

    Eg- World Cup: Izzy, Efe, Fraser, VvD(?), Sammi if he’s still here;

    Players sold – ???

    HH!!

  17. asonofdan,

One of the reasons I took to posting rather than lurking was to keep my mind off a sad time for me.

Hope things work out well. KTF

  18. Meant to add…. so all the guys knocking the new lads after a handful of games, give them a chance… some will come good and some won’t. EVERY football transfer is a gamble and there are few guarantees a player will settle immediately and go on to be terrific for any club….. Torres anyone ? Good at Atletico, great at Liverpool and pretty poor at Chelsea overall….. That’s a £50m gamble that Chelsea took….

  19. jamesgang

No, I am on solid ground there. I have always supported Sammi but, right now, I wouldn`t be too disappointed if he left. I would, though, like us to know that a particular game was to be his last. I think many fans would like to give him an appreciative farewell.

You get it, but some people don’t.

Henrik obviously not nearly as good as Finnbogason ;)

So why are the rich clubs not splashing out big money for the Icelander?

  22. Balde, mo, and pukki on 10k each a week.

Sydney, I don’t know where you get your ‘facts’ from. They are all on 30k per week.

    Well….you started it.

  23. Jamesgang… if you can have someone verify that you said that in ’94 and are willing to swear on the daily record (is that still the bible for football up here ? :) ) then yes, you can have 25 points but you might need to share them with your (ahem) “witness” …..

  24. A few trying to be a bit smug with comments about Finnbogason yesterday, and a few mentioning his International goals. The boys record for the past two seasons is PLAYED 64 games all in,and has scored,60 goals.with over 20 assists.Try and be smart all you like about people mentioning his name, but that is what you call a striker. In 5 games against Ajax,he has scored 6 goals.Amazing how easily led some are.If we wont pay the money then the guy is obviously duff.
