Neither club has imperative to do Griffiths deal

953

When an unexpected name flies into the frame from left field there’s always a concern about what you’ve written about him before.  I still remember the day we signed Kenny Miller, and an earlier blog with my assessment of the player (subsequently found to be on the money).  While it’s important to be fair when assessing players, I’m not in the business of trashing them before they kick a ball for Celtic, so Miller’s signing was not a comfortable one.

With this in mind, I typed “Leigh Griffiths” into the articles database to check what had been written.  Apart from match reports, there was only one comment, the day after last season’s Scottish Cup Final:

“Leigh Griffiths has had plenty of uncomplimentary discourse written about him this season, most of it deserved, so it should be recorded that he was the first Hibs player to return applause in the direction of Celtic fans yesterday, closely followed by his team-mates.

“This is the way football should be. For too long our game has been poisoned by the unique kind of rivalry you got in Scotland. More of the same, please.”

He unquestionably did deserve the criticism that came his way last year.  If he gets his move to Celtic he needs to grow as a person, as well as a player, which is a big challenge.  His move towards the Celtic support at Hampden was a modest but necessary first step towards reassessing other people.

Having said this, don’t go ordering your ‘Griffiths’ shirt just yet, I reckon a deal has no more than a 50% chance of happening.  Wolves didn’t invite our interest and our need is to be ready by June, not February.  Neither club has an imperative to do this deal, which is often an omen for snags to get in the way. Patience required, as you know………

Reminder to everyone who booked tickets for the CQteN St Patrick’s Day Dinner that they have to be paid by this Friday! Let me know if you can’t find details, celticquicknews@gmail.com

McCarthy and biton are worlds apart as footballers.

Looking at 1 game a game his team got smashed isint really the best way to look at a players value, McCarthy is a good footballer who will have a great career in the PL. Top player who still has a ST at Celtic park HH

In response have a read at TBB’s post re the uncertainty of player development.

Rather than complain about this being so why not appreciate the time and effort that goes into making undeveloped players top professionals?

The reality stays the same but changing our perception of it changes us and all change starts within.

Early days but yet to see anything in Biton to suggest he will be a regular first team Celtic player. In saying that he’s not exactly getting a decent run of games in the team to show how good he is.

He’s kind of like Ki but not as good.

  6. If Leigh Griffiths cant get a game for Wolves, why would they play big Amido? If we must loan him out he should go to the Championship and play for whoever has the biggest chance of challenging Sevco for the Div 1 title.

“Never forget, all those ‘prospects’ were others youths who couldn’t break through either. If, in a one team race for the flag, we can’t introduce and hype and move on our youth – at profit – rather than buy in others rejects – at loss – and to the detriment of our very own youth system, then I think our system is stressed.”

    Have I read that wrong?

Currently highest bid is £16.90 to ‘dialadonkey’ in Blackpool. Strangely no one willing to meet the buy-it-now price of £18.88. Seems they cannae look past £16.90.

Delivery et al. Buyer will collect. Will not post out. May spend fed before paying off debts.

Seems like it to me from comments on here.

The last time I saw him we were cheering him and he waved back, right in front of me at a sunny Hampden SCF.

I am a friend of the boy’s dad, so in no way would I try to underrate the player. I’m just saying that in my opinion its difficult to get a handle on how footballers are valued these days. Of course he’s better than Biton right now, but I fail to see the difference a 12m holding midfielder makes in comparison to someone seemingly 1/10 his value, especially when they are outplayed like last night at Anfield. The game in England has gone crazy (add in PSG and the big two Spanish), and I fear its dragging the rest of Europe down with it.

Wolves are choosing not to start their top scorer. Griffiths is being allowed back up the road a lot. It would make sense for Wolves to cut their losses and sell the lad. he is not settled and won’t be settled going forward. he wants back to Scotland and Celtic know it.

Celtic will get this guy before the window closes.

They may have to replace him first though.

From a Celtic point of view the interest is in the open and a deal needs to be done. If we don;t get him and he goes onto better things it will be thrown up a bit like some others we missed out on for the sake a few hundred grand.

I expect the deal to go through. Wolves would be silly to hold onto the player this window.

  22. AsonofDan, sorry no time to read back, but you are in my thoughts toady, whatever has happened or whatever is troubling you.

Kitalba, I remember another non scoring forward coming here, Essentially bought to play wide midfield, attacking midfielder if you will, I thought he looked like a player, he did have success early on in his time, but when things really clicked he was a phenomenon.

I don’t want to damn Pukki with expectations of the later career, but he is reminiscent of Henke early in his career. Good touch, good link play, technically capable, tactically astute, making runs those around him couldn’t capitalise on, because they didn’t see the possibility quickly enough. Pukki didn’t let Charnley in to score a winner against us!

And no I’ve not bee drinking!

Probably just me in that aspect, but I agree we have a fine player in Teemu Pukki.

Back to work. Then on to Celtic park!

    It suits their argument?

In saying that he has only started 2 of the last 8 games since mid December and hasn’t even come off the bench in the last couple. Since he’s said he wants home and would want to sign for us he has found himself mostly on the bench. Until then he was first choice and is still their top scorer.

What a players worth is only what a team is willing to pay mate, Celtic might think VVD is worth £15m but if we only get a bid of £5m that’s all he’s worth HH
