Neither club has imperative to do Griffiths deal

953

When an unexpected name flies into the frame from left field there’s always a concern about what you’ve written about him before.  I still remember the day we signed Kenny Miller, and an earlier blog with my assessment of the player (subsequently found to be on the money).  While it’s important to be fair when assessing players, I’m not in the business of trashing them before they kick a ball for Celtic, so Miller’s signing was not a comfortable one.

With this in mind, I typed “Leigh Griffiths” into the articles database to check what had been written.  Apart from match reports, there was only one comment, the day after last season’s Scottish Cup Final:

“Leigh Griffiths has had plenty of uncomplimentary discourse written about him this season, most of it deserved, so it should be recorded that he was the first Hibs player to return applause in the direction of Celtic fans yesterday, closely followed by his team-mates.

“This is the way football should be. For too long our game has been poisoned by the unique kind of rivalry you got in Scotland. More of the same, please.”

He unquestionably did deserve the criticism that came his way last year.  If he gets his move to Celtic he needs to grow as a person, as well as a player, which is a big challenge.  His move towards the Celtic support at Hampden was a modest but necessary first step towards reassessing other people.

Having said this, don’t go ordering your ‘Griffiths’ shirt just yet, I reckon a deal has no more than a 50% chance of happening.  Wolves didn’t invite our interest and our need is to be ready by June, not February.  Neither club has an imperative to do this deal, which is often an omen for snags to get in the way. Patience required, as you know………

Reminder to everyone who booked tickets for the CQteN St Patrick’s Day Dinner that they have to be paid by this Friday! Let me know if you can’t find details, celticquicknews@gmail.com

You know who had similar form scoring 146 goals in 155 appearances – Harald Brattbakk.

    ———————————————————————–

I commented on that the other day. Harald is a good example of a player who could score goals – as long as the team’s style of play was suited to what he did. He scored some great goals making a run ftrom deep when the ball was played across goal to his feet. However, there were times when he appeared to be inches from the goalmouth and all he had to do was tap the ball for it to go in and it didn’t happen.

All in all, his style was not suited to ours. That has to be a consideration when purchasing a striker no matter what the stats are – do they suit our style of play? A further complication for us is that the style of play we deploy in the SPFL needs to be different from in Europe.

    It is a sweeping statement.

The suggestion that Celtic only sign ‘rejects’ is laughable.

More than Sammi anyway. His goals to game ratio must be more than Sammi’s. And yes, my memories of him seem to be mud splattered. He was also, latterly, playing in a better team than Sammi is. Off to check wiki in case I am wrong about his goals.

I even remember one moniker add on – “bring me his head on a plate”. (with regards Neil Lennon) (paraphrasing) (sic, sic).

If you were not about at the time and you’d like me to remind you by re-posting some of his bile, I’d be only too happy to accommodate you.

Prove me wrong, I dare you, in fact I double dare you, you can even bring in Rugby teams, hockey teams, junior football teams, and basketball teams, ;)) go for it, I’m away to the credit union, ti see if the wee man in the back office has any kindness in his heart, HH.

“Chelsea played thru’ the middle when Sutton was there, that was the undoing of Chris Sutton at Stamford Bridge, not his lack of skill or guts.”

I know a lot of Chelsea fans and I’ve yet to meet one that rates Chris Sutton.

Sutton was a great player and I was really excited when Celtic signed him. I’m glad it didn’t work out for him at Chelsea.

But football fans are fickle, we see that on a daily basis on here. You will never convince any Chelsea fan that Chris Sutton was a great player.

Balde should be given until the end of December to prove he has what it takes and if he does he should be getting plenty starts by then.

That’ll be a year and a half worth of coaching so if he hasn’t made inroads by then we ought to cut our losses. He’s well into his 20s, he’s not a 15 year old kid still developing physically, mentally and tactically.

If by the end of December there is no change he should be sold in January. He will do a job for someone.

Interesting point made earlier about Niall McGinn and how he’s scoring for fun for Aberdeen and couldn’t do it for us.

He got about a third of the game time Paddy McCourt did. Maybe if we had tried him more centrally like Aberdeen have we might not have been so quick to let him go.

Watching the Merseyside derby last night. Gerrard is a obviously a class act with Roy of the Rovers qualities. James McCarthy is a good sort of holding link player, similar to Biton.

If Gerrard was 26 and not 34, he’d cost over 40m.

McCarthy 12m? I suppose thats the going rate but should there be an 11m difference between his and Biton’s value?

Which brings me to my point..What would Paul McStay’s value be right now if he was at his peak. Hypothetical I know, but I’d suggest a lot closer to Gerrard than McCarthy. The guy was one of those players who was born at the wrong time. Just as he would have been a star today, Paul would have made it into the Lisbon team, although not at Murdoch’s expense.

Since the first game Pukki ever played for us I said on here he was a good player with fast feet and a football brain. I don’t see him as a striker though, though that is not to say he can’t become a very good one given the chance.
