Never change, Dave.

You can tell when a crisis is brewing at Ibrox, the emergence of a spontaneous statement is a sure giveaway.  Far from apologising for using club funds in an ultimately pointless legal defence of Sports Direct’s enforcement of a contract signed last year, chairman, Dave King, reacted to the reality that Newco will complete at least four years of his tenure trophy-less by threatening Sports Direct with further legal action.

This time the action is over a lack of accounting information on the performance of that merchandising contract from a year ago.  It is almost certain that Sports Direct are obliged to provide a sales reports and some form of audit, this would be the basis of any sales-linked bonus payments.

Dave’s court action is likely to be the most expensively purchased accounting report in history.  All this gunboat diplomacy may seem wasteful but some clubs cannot exist without a bogeyman.

Celtic are now in the League Cup Final.  Those inside the club will realise there is a lot of work to do to complete the first leg of the treble treble, but the majority who traipsed out of Hampden on Sunday will consider the matter a forgone conclusion.  They saw a green and white future; the very real prospect of another treble while the chairman with the reverse Midas Touch controls Ibrox.

Fergus McCann built a new stadium and had league trophy in a cabinet in the boardroom when he left Celtic five years after taking control.  This character will be at Ibrox four years come March and the greatest achievement in his tenure was a semi-final penalty kick competition win.

Never change, Dave.

  1. My friends in Celtic.

We all want to fulfil our potential in European football. We can , should and will do better ( possibly with the help of a sports psychologist) As we speak our Scottish rivals will be receiving the latest £375000 cheque from Uefa, courtesy of Celtic ” success ” .

The old debate; Is PL value for money at Parkhead continues to raise its head. Well there are indesputable facts to contemplate before giving a definitive answer.

What have we achieved while PL has been at the helm. Largely a period when the country has been in austerity mode is :-

We have won a record breaking double treble, and counting.

We have achieved a record breaking unbeaten run of 69 games.

We have watched the huns go into meltdown and liquidation. Still counting court cases.

We have the biggest and best squad in Scotland with a substantial affordable wage bill of circa £61m

We have state of the art training facilities at Lennoxtown and are developing Barrowfield.

Our stadium has been transformed, with the Celtic Way the jewel in our crown.

New roofs, new lighting system and a top of the range hybrid pitch are recent improvements.

We were the first team in the UK to provide safe standing facilities which is the envy of many.

We were the first team in the UK to provide free menstrual products in the stadium

    We have record sponsorship

We have just announced the strongest financial results in our history, with a mind boggling £ 106m turnover achieved without the golden goose of inflated TV money.

We have nurtured the most expensive defender in world football.

We again have sold over 50k season tickets. Only Man Utd and possibly West Ham have sold more.

We proudly promote gender equality, with a new focus given to our Ladies team. Ref our Ladies game recognising International Womans day.

We proudly encourage, promote and participate in numerous charity games.

In PL we have a voice at the top table of European football.

We have the oldest club magazine in world football.

In partnership with the Celtic Foundation we have raised over £20m for the poorest and most vulnerable in our society.

We have just taken the biggest support to a game, and played to the biggest attendance in 29 years.

There is probably more, much more.

Yes debate PL’s merit or lack of merit, but never downplay our numerous achievements. They are remarkable.

HH to all, and onto the city of discovery.

Macjay- so there are no issues with Res 12,LNS,5WA, lack of application of existing rules (which have been applied to other clubs), etc, etc? You know there has been screeds of evidence on here, but you conveniently forget. Blind loyalty is part of the problem. HH

    ==================================================================

    Actually blind support.

    Guilty as charged.

Celtic supporters accuse Scottish football authorities of having broken the rules.

    OK

Why not take your accusations to them instead of attacking our own ?

Why do you get in our faces instead of theirs ?

Don`t you realise that the ” miscreants ” of the SPL , SFA are laughing their faces off at Celtic being attacked by our own over actions and deeds for which Celtic , as far as I understand it , bear no responsibility ?

In other words , assisting our enemies.

What power do Celtic ( Sinn Fein…… because we are alone ) , have to bring about a just resolution of these issues ?

Save your bullets for our enemies.

    TET

you know that, in the main, I agree with your sentiment …

although, as a technicality, it is arguable that a CEO’s first obligation is to shareholders, but to the Company itself… which, in law, is a legal person, and has an identity in law that is separate from the shareholders

In theory, what is good for the company is usually good for the shareholders….at least, that is the theory…

the problem is that, in reality, that is not always the case … and also, where there are different groups and types of shareholders, what is good for one group of shareholders is not always good for other groups of shareholders…

There is no division here mi amigo, I support Celtic FC, the PLC are nothing to me, they are parasites who take from the club and give nothing back.

    ===========================================================================

    No division ?

Celtic are the whole box and dice.

    Sorry , mate.

    Celtic are indivisible to me.

Lock , stock and green barrel.

If I felt as you do , I could not in all conscience support an organisation run by parasites.

  5. TET has a serious and telling point.

There is very little evidence of the CEO or the Board taking Res 12 seriously or of being willing to re-visit the events of 2012 and before.

Apart from hoping it was masterful inactivity, letting our oppponents destroy themselves, there is little to commend the Board’s handling of the Rangers/Sevco affair or the 5WA.

It remains a stain on our willingness to stand up for ourselves.

  6. macjay1 for Neil Lennon on

    Sorry , lads.

Can`t reply to all those kind enough to respond to my opinions.

    Here`s the irony .

Tomorrow we`re on the one road. United. Shoulder to shoulder .

On the road and the miles to Dundee.

    Very twee.

  7. Macjay – so you don’t differentiate between the team, the supporters, the shareholders and the board? If one is out of kilter you either support it totally or reject it totally because we’re indivisible, mental!

  8. MiT

Oh FFS, dinny do this to me :-)

So, tell me who or what he should be doing, and to whom and then tell me why he isny doing it for our benefit…..

    HH

    ……………………………………….

    MacJay

I don’t support an organisation run by parasites, I support a football club who happen to be ran by parasites.

Please feel free to tell me where I was wrong with anything I posted in my reply to you.

    HH

  9. Macjay- Celtic supporters accuse Scottish football authorities of having broken the rules.

    OK

Why not take your accusations to them instead of attacking our own ?

Why do you get in our faces instead of theirs ?

That is the task of PL and the Celtic Board, that is what they are there for,and take huge money for not doing their jobs. Res 12 is funded by a fan, that is not right. The Board consistently hide on major issues, and wait on the support to try and fight their battles, which they know will be ignored, as best they can.True leadership for £2.5m plus per year.

  10. A bit of clarity might help.

The 5 Way Agreement was not signed by Celtic. It was signed by the SPL representing all the club’s in the SPL.

It kept a version of Rangers alive and no club in Scottish football would vote to lose 50k paying customers. The SFL in particular whose members outnumbered the SPL clubs definitely welcomed the 5 Way. Celtic, even if they wanted to, were powerless to stop it.

There might be an argument, if facts emerged about how the 5 Way was negotiated, that Celtic could have done more to take out the toxicity inherent in it, but they simply could not have stopped a version of Rangers continuing.

Lord Nimmo Smith. Again this was an SPL responsibility and Celtic/PL wrote to SFA (who passed the buck to the SPL in 2012) saying how serious a matter it was that had to be carried out properly (I paraphrase from memory) They copied that letter to UEFA.

What has emerged since (and I blogged about it recently on SFM under JPP Perverting Justice if anyone wants a better understanding of what the SFA did in 2012 on Craig Whyte Tribunal and LNS) is that the lauded Judicial Panel Protocol introduced by Regan in 2011 was used by SFA to avoid justice instead of delivering it.

Celtic via the SPFL asked for LNS to be reviewed last September but SFA refused.

Why and how all of the foregoing came about should be examined even if only to provide assurances it cannot happen again.

The only way Ogilvie could have been prevented from becoming President in June 201? before ebts and side letters became currency, was if sufficient clubs opposed or there was another candidate. On what grounds in 2011 could Celtic have opposed his election and persuaded other clubs to join them?

If you are looking for a common thread here it is in the way the business of football governance is conducted in Scotland that relies on majority votes and how difficult it is for Celtic to muster sufficient support to make change happen.

Res12 might be the last chance at mustering.

I put this forward in the interests of balance.

It’s not just about the people involved. It is as much if not more about the systems that lock them in.

  11. What is the Stars on

Its a regular theme on huns sites like rangers media and follow follow that Peter Lawwell is the devil incarnate who controls Scottish football for the benefit of Celtic and the detriment of all other clubs especially the quintessential British club.

Its a regular theme on CQN that Peter Lawwell is the devil incarnate and refuses to stand up for Celtic and constantly holds us back to appease his orange masters in order to keep the old firm bigot buck flowing in.

CQN is of course a joke amongst Celtic fan sites because of its pro board lackeys and Lawwell sycophants !!!!.

  12. SFTB

Thing is I don’t want it to be so, I want the club to stand up for what is right, I fully understand that money is the b all, it’s what makes the world go round, without it we are fecked, but to let others virtually steal from you is really not on.

It’s not an easy situation when everything and nearly everyone is against you, as it seems to be for us in scotland, or sectarianland in our case, but to actively assist them is bordering on treason to our cause imo.

The answer, who the feck knows, but one thing I do know is that this PLC is not it.

I admire how you always see the good in the suits at the club, I have told you this more than once.

Take the Ogilvie re election, why didn’t Celtic put forward a candidate, that would have sent out a massive get it up you message, but no, they just followed on like sheep.

The LNS review, so they just accepted the sfa’s refusal then, when knowing fine well that LNS didn’t have the tools to do the job, the tools that the spl didn’t give him btw, Doncaster didn’t furnish him with the relevant info, your admiration is admirable mi amigo, but ffs, you know more than most what is going down.

    HH

  16. MacJay

The world wide kudos Celtic, the football club got from the Palestinian flag incident was more than all the fines the club have had to pay over the years, the club couldn’t have bought the good will we got with all the money they are squirreling away, with respect, to berate the support with stuff like this is pathetic, but you just canny help it, can you.

  17. Auldheid @ 9:56

Thanks for providing some balance and from a well informed position but while I appreciate you doing that, even you have expressed frustration at the PLC’s approach to Res. 12 have you not?

The CEO and board have to stand up and be counted on this as it is the issue that imho has the potential to split the support as you can often see by the debate over it. Call the cheats out and it’s a win/win. Fail to do so and it’s a win/lose. Win personally for the board as in little hassle or strife other than some of us saying they are not fit for office but lose morally, spiritually and eventually sportingly as the cheats will prosper!

A business that is as successful as celtic has been over an extended period doesn’t run itself, it has a well-defined corporate structure with each director on the board offering something different to the business. And I’m guessing Dermot Desmond doesn’t have lame duck directors on any of the boards of his companies, its not how you make billions in business.
