New Balance for Celtic

860

New Balance take over from Nike this summer as Celtic’s official kit partner and main sponsor.  The US sportswear firm have along heritage in technical products, like running shoes, with less of a legacy in the leisurewear market than the likes of Nike, but this move, as well as a recent deal to partner Liverpool, indicates a strong commitment to become a major player in the football marketplace.

Both the Celtic and Liverpool contracts have been advertised as potentially record deals for the respective clubs, although each club declined to put a figure on the value, or the contract period in their official statements.  It’s likely that a significant part of the contract fee will depend on Champions League qualification.

Unconfirmed reports put the size of the deal at £29m, cash that other clubs have securitised off to a retailer.

Last call today for CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner, which takes place next Friday, 13 March, at the Kerrydale Suite.  After the dinner we have a Q&A with Packy Bonnar, Tommy Coyne, Joe Miller and Tom Boyd.  We have Archie Macpherson speaking about Jock Stein on the 50th anniversary of him becoming manager, and song from Patricia Ferns.

The object of the night is to raise money to build another school kitchen for Mary’s Meals in Malawi.  Kris Commons’ partner, Lisa Hague, will also join us.  She will be auctioning an incredible prize of a signed Ronny Deila jersey, signed Kris Commons boots and match hospitality in the Players’ Lounge for the Marie Curie Hospice in Glasgow.

Tickets will be posted out over the next few days, email me if you’re still looking, celticquicknews@gmail.com we’re closing the book tomorrow.

I too was at that St Johnstone game. IIRC the crowd was over 65,000. They had a right good side in those days. Sadly we lost 1-0. I think that year we lost the EC final in Milan. Even world class sides lose the odd game. I don’t recall demands for wholesale sackings or calls for the manager’s head.

@ £7.5k per pop in terms of fines, big mike could likely breach for a good while yet before he’s reduced to prodigal son of Struth status and starts envying your pigs’ sustenance.

  5. I posted after the home game vs Aberdeed that one of the biggest positives was the size of the crowd. The attendance last night however was not.

Regarding the Nike/New Balance comments, my job involves significant overseas travel and its very seldom i see any Celtic Kit in a Nike shop.

    OK, decent enough money.

We’ve swapped £5M per year for the past 10 years with Nike, for what looks like a little less than £6M per year over the next 5 years with New Balance.

An uplift of 15% over the deal struck 11 years ago, some of which inevitably performance related, and likely loaded towards the later years of the deal.

Meanwhile, inflation rages in the football world, and we’re doing our level best to hang onto the coattails of the new European football giants Burnley, Stoke and Leicester.

As the Animals sang when Jock Stein was taking over at Celtic Park… We gotta get out of this place.

Although Celtic were poor, it was interesting to note that the referee did not award a single foul against St. Johnstone after the 61st minute. That’s 31 minutes (if you include the generous 2 minutes added).

Are you seriously suggesting we would choose New Balance over Nike or Adidas for that matter? I well remember the triumphalism from within the club when they announced the Nike deal and how it demonstrated the strength of our brand and our global appeal.

I didn’t trash the deal. I said it was maybe the best of a bad job. That’s a long way from trashing it as you suggest. Lastly, how do you it’s a record deal? Were you privy to the meetings between NB and Celtic?

I remember about 25 years ago I bought a pair of New Balance trainers .. Well made black leather with the gold ‘N’ logo on the sides. Girlfriend slagging me at the time.. ” they’re pure treggy!” Thinking they weren’t fashionable .. Well, Eleanor … Who’s laughing now?

    WHO’S LAUGHING NOW!!!! :)

Think I liked one of the nike strips .. The 67 anniversary one.

Eye-opening statistic. I did mention to someone that the ref reverted to type when he began to believe that St J had a chance of victory.

Is that view your own perceived opinion, or is there any factual basis to your statements?

    —————————————————————

I recognise “marketing speak” when I read it and Paul’s latest blog reads like a direct lift of something either the club or NB (or both) will have included in their press release.

  16. If by describing a record deal as the only one on the table and being dumped by the last sponsor is not trashing it , then I don’t know what is

  17. We should have a pre season tournament, the New Balance Cup. Celtic, Liverpool, Porto & Sevilla.

Im currently in Dubai and there is around 5 nike stores, full of Arsenal Man Utd and Brazil etc

its quite easy to buy a fake Celtic strip though!

During the MON era (in the Umbro time) quite a few local stores stocked the hoops, and even had Celtic (Larssen) displays around the store

I note your comments about NY and Vegas, But in my opinion/experience Nike dont have Celtic as one of their “big” teams, make NB will.

  19. traditionalist88 on

Was in Nike and other sports shops in Mexico last year and was pleased to see the hoops for sale in a couple of shops. Even picked one up and placed it in front of a Chelsea shirt the way we did with the Downfall books and the Rangers section in Waterstones:)

    m6bhoy,

rather than Nike dumping Celtic, I was told by a designer who works for Nike in the Netherlands, that Nike are looking at dumping football in general in favour of the running industry.

After all, they have already “dumped” Man U, one of football’s foremost “global brands” so you may be a wee bit out in your suggestion.

    HAIL! HAIL!

  22. Manchester United and Liverpool have both gone with emerging suppliers in the kit industry. It is a well known business maxim that emerging players are often willing to give better deals to get into the market than existing players would to stay in the market.

I think the New Balance deal is a good bit of business with a company keen to get onto the ladder. That will bring a willingness to work with us to promote its goods.

Now if we had decided that it was better to sell off our retail rights simply to pay another month’s salary to overpaid and underperforming players, then I would have an issue.

but choosing New Balance? Shrewd move to me.

  23. Paul Murray is a former director of oldco and, over recent years, has been tagging onto various businessmens’ coat tails hoping to get some influence at his beloved Rangers. I don’t think he’s a very successful businessman but he does have a fine head of hair.

As ever with these sort of things, the devil will be in the detail. The deal may well have the potential to exceed previous shirt deals but I’ve no doubt this will be dependent on the team achieeing a number of sporting objectives which raise the club’s profile, eg. qualifying for the Cl group stages being the absolute minimum. Maybe when I get to hear Peter Lawwell’s comments I might accept he sincerely believes what he’s saying. There’s a first time for everything I suppose.

I was on this morning criticising Efe and it was not because he doesn’t give 100%. I know well he does. He simply isn’t a full back or at least the kind of full back who fits into our manager’s system. He cannot cross the ball.

Well, when I was watching yesterday, Efe put in the best cross of the game, with his left foot! Trouble was, no one got on the end of it. That’s another problem. He did his job though.

    Tam,

Arsenal have ditched Nike and man utd are dropping Nike soon.

I’m not disputing your claim obviously, just adding to the point that Nike are not as big as they were in the footy game.
