Newco choose innuendo instead of action

904

Newco did not disappoint with last night’s statement, it was as incoherent, angry and contradictory as you would expect.  They claim:

“We are extremely concerned that member clubs were not provided with enough information, or time, to allow them to make fully informed decisions”.

They were allowed 28 days to ask for as much information as they wanted before voting!  Newco and most others were able to respond within two days – by choice.

“We are aware several club directors claimed they were being bullied”.

Several people we are not naming were bullied by someone we are not naming.  This is like the evidence of wrongdoing they say they have but would rather not show anyone.  To quote their founding manager, “Who are these people?”

They want to sound hard but have chosen to shut up instead of revealing anything – nice one.

“Addressing the [financial hardship of many of our clubs]was one of our primary objectives and the resolution we presented could and should have been progressed”.

“The SPFL chose to obstruct our resolution”.

“The fact that this solution was not afforded sufficient consideration defies belief”.

An independent QC was employed to examine their resolution and found it was not competent and could not be put to members.  They claim to want independent oversight but completely ignore independent oversight has happened.

“There is precedent within Scottish football that a league must not be compromised by changing the rules during the course of the competition.”

Again, a claim shrouded in innuendo, this time an unexplained precedent.  If I was a betting man, I would say they forgot the league schedule was extended in 2008 to accommodate Oldco (I regularly hear of this amnesia), and are referring to the fact that it was not extended as long as they wanted.

“The anger of our fans is understood and shared by our Board, who continue to examine all legal options available.”  Newco do so well in court, the SPFL board must be terrified.

The statement confirms they have a problem accepting rules.  An independent QC explained to Newco MD Stewart Robertson and the rest of the SPFL board why Newco’s resolution could not be pursued.  Robertson was asked if there was anything more he wanted to ask and if he felt the matter had been given sufficient consideration by the SPFL board.

It was not the SPFL board, the chief exec, a retained solicitor or any other malign foe who stopped their resolution, it was an independent QC.  These are the rules, they were independently enforced, accept them.

Remember this SPFL vote did not end the Premiership season, all it did was ensure the season will not be voided, all other options remain on the table.  It’s not much of a hill to stand and fight on in these difficult times.

    St StIves,

I notice there is a player actually smiling in that photo, J Hastie going by the names at the bottom of the pic, I expect he was properly chastised for such a show of wanton disregard for protocol.

Wow indeed. That gives a clear insight to the PM’s thinking and the potential reasoning why the Government was so slow to react.

We can only hope and pray we’re past the worst.

I dont know those behind the shamrock magazine, or maybe i do, but between them and brendan sweeney’s book, the facts are that prominent glasgow irish and celtic founders were nationalists, its all there.

    irrefutable.

In his address to the Convention Davitt recalled the inhumane treatment he’d been subject to in English prisons:

There is an instinct of humanity common to every created being which prompts a man to give food even to a hungry dog. But it is left for England, enlightened England, to include semi-starvation in the system of punishment she metes out to her Irish political foes. I have undergone over nine years imprisonment because I have been a rebel against misgovernment from the moment I was first taught that, next to my duty to God was my duty to Irish liberty, and I say here today that during seven long years of that imprisonment, under England’s system of punishment, I never for one hour ceased to feel the pangs of hunger.

  11. Davitt was a regular visitor to Scotland where the Irish National League (INL) was the major organisation promoting Irish self-determination. He would usually stay at the Lenzie home of John Ferguson, his political ally and long-regarded as the figurehead of the Irish in Scotland. Ferguson was an Ulster Protestant who had moved to Glasgow as a young man and became committed to the cause of Irish freedom. He used his publishing business to promote associated campaigns and was the founder of the influential Home Government Branch of the INL in Glasgow, the treasurer of which was John Glass, one of the founding fathers of Celtic FC.

Martin Compton as Bro Walfred as he will make cameos every so often

  14. Scottish representation at the Convention was impressive. Delegations from Broxburn, Dumbarton, Dundee, Greenock and Hamilton were joined by ten separate branches of the INL from Glasgow. The most remarkable delegation was the only sporting organisation of the Irish diaspora represented in Dublin – Celtic Football Club. This delegation was made up of President Glass, Treasurer James McKay and former player and new Secretary, Willie Maley. The decision to attend the Convention was a bold declaration by the club, still in its first decade, that it supported the cause of Irish freedom. This striking move reflected the fact that the club stemmed from, and was supported by, the expatriate Irish community in Glasgow.

Where does John Live , I know a John M from Dowanhill st

  16. The decision to have the club officially represented at the Irish Race Convention was clearly political and had the full support of club members. This is confirmed by the other founding fathers, committeemen and former players who also made the trip to Dublin in various delegations including captain James Kelly, Mick Dunbar, club lawyer Joseph Shaughnessy, Dr. Joseph Scanlon, Thomas Colgan (also associated with Belfast Celtic) William McKillop, Joseph McGroary and John McGuire.

No sure about address, went to school all the way through St Peters, & St Thomas Aquinas, same age.

  20. Ten years after the Convention the three key figures involved in linking Celtic so openly with the Irish cause died within six weeks of each other – John Ferguson, Michael Davitt and John Glass. They had each worked at different levels – international, regional and local – in support of the same Irish freedom and were bound together also by the football club.

Did he work in IT ?

Think the one I know was from the Drum and is 60 this year

  22. While Celtic’s delegation in common with most others remained in Dublin for a few days after the Convention ended, John Glass – a Celtic man through and through – had his priorities right. He caught the overnight steamboat and was back home in Glasgow by Saturday afternoon, just in time to see Celtic beat Hearts 3-0!

It had been a great week for the two causes closest to the heart of John Glass for whom sport and politics would always be inextricably linked.

A few years back a few of us were up in the Isle Of Skye, family history and all, but we were also looking for the building in Portree from which Michael Davitt addressed the cause of land reform, particular in the case of Crofters, who were still being forced off the land, this time by Clan Chiefs. That was in 1886, (Davitt, not me). Had a few drinks in a bar, turned out that was the very place, but the balcony from which Michael had addressed the square had been removed some time ago. Pity about that. Great speech too, more or less a hymn to the Gaels. It’s still there too.

The Governance of Ireland Act, was actually passed in 1914, after the Commons over-ruled the Lords three times, and it gained Royal Assent. The Great War of Civilisation took over, the Act suspended, and finally repealed in 1920.

The US Embassy communicated concerns back to the State Department as part of a request, made on behalf of the Wuhan Institute of Virology, for funding to support the hiring of additional specialists under an existing grant overseen by a US research institution (the request was denied).

    Building the bonfire

These State Department cables have become the heart of the US case against China; the fact that China requested additional specialist support from the US to help operate a BSL-4 lab that was conducting publicly acknowledged research into the link between bat coronaviruses and humans has somehow been turned into a conspiracy theory predicated on Chinese malfeasance and secrecy.

In many ways, the US ‘investigation’ into the Wuhan laboratory resembles the famous witch inquisition undertaken in ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’: a witch burns, so she is made of wood; wood floats, as does a duck. Conclusion: a duck is made of wood. This kind of stupefying enquiry would normally be beyond the remit of professional intelligence agencies. However, the United States has a well-documented history of using intelligence to suit the political purposes of those in power. What is taking place today regarding the Wuhan Institute of Virology is little more than an old-fashioned witch hunt.

There is little difference between Monty Python’s skit and the US intelligence investigation into China – both seek to prove that a duck is made of wood. Both are little more than farce, but whereas Monty Python’s is intended to generate mirth, Trump’s witch hunt could have dire consequences for US-China relations going forward. At a time when the global community needs to be coming together to deal with the dire impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, Trump’s political deflection is the last thing the world needs.
