Newco find new ways to traumatise themselves

452

Scott Bain had little chance with either Newco goal yesterday, but made several flawless interventions in in the game: diving out from his goal to hold a cross in the first half, saving when the hopeless Morelos was clean through on him, grasping a free kick just under his crossbar and punching the ball out of play.

His game will most be remembered for the added time save from Windass before he collected the ball off the post when Morelos showed all the composure of Ibrox strikers before him, like Sebo and van Vossen.

Jozo Simunovic scarcely broke sweat before his 57th minute red card.  There could have been an earlier red for a two footed lunge on Tom Rogic, and I don’t believe there was intent behind Jozo’s action, but it was a red card.

‘What happened to Dedryck?’ remains an open question.  The Belgian international picked himself up from a bomb scare first season to become an integral part of the Invincibles, but after gifting possession for the opening Newco goal, and being turned by Morelos at the second, he will have been the most relieved man in Glasgow at full time yesterday.

Tom Rogic’s goal was incredible, not only the quality of the 27-yard strike, but the way he created the opening for himself.  No one else in the Scottish game could have scored that goal.  Some players hide when they are a goal down in a hostile environment, Tom stepped up when we needed it.

Moussa Dembele scored one, got an assist and led the line well.  His goal exposed some inept defending.  A Scott Bain pass to Scott Brown allowed the captain to launch a long ball with his first touch, Moussa controlled with his head before lobbing the keeper.

This goal came after a period of intense Celtic pressure on the Newco goal, which forced eight corners but didn’t create the breakthrough.  When Newco pressed forward they lost concentration.

Like Rogic, Moussa is a player who comes alive on big stage.

With 25% of the game remaining, the scores level and being a man down, Brendan Rodgers swapped a midfielder for a striker.  Without a right back on the park, I didn’t expect Forrest to be sacrificed, but it was a ballsy, match winning, play.

Odsonne Eduard didn’t hang around. 100 seconds after taking to the field, he scored what proved to be the winner.  Think back for a moment to the occasions Brendan played Odsonne with Moussa and Leigh Griffiths on the bench.  It was clear Odsonne was still learning his craft, but without those development opportunities he would not have been yesterday’s match winner.

The final drama was provided by Windass’ shot, Bain’s save and that miss from Morelos.  The ball sat perfectly for the striker four yards out, but as we so often see from one footed players, what was an easy tap-in with his left foot, bounced off the outside of his right boot in the wrong direction.

All he needed to do was hold his left foot against the ball to equalise.  How do players get to that level so reluctant to use their weaker foot?

Twice coming from behind, then scoring a winner with 10 men, is a memorable way to win any game.  At Ibrox, it was delicious.  Newco collapsed like a pack of cards, at home, with a man advantage.  They continue to find innovative ways to traumatise themselves.

Dear Police Scotland, we are extremely keen to have your views on the SPL fixture Celtic v Rangers which is to be scheduled on ?? / ?? / 2018, whereby there is the strong likelihood Celtic could be crowned champions should they win the fixture. This is likely to cause a riot either within the stadium or/and across the streets of Scotland which we feel sure you wouldn’t wish to see. Friday 13th

I’m not superstitious, and it was an uneventful day today. I feel all right, and my weight is 58.5 kgs.

I was not so tired today, but my back gets sore now and again sitting in the bed. I didn’t get the Irish News, which makes me think there is probably something in it that they don’t wish me to see, but who cares. Fr Murphy was in tonight for a few minutes.

The Screws had a quick look around my cell today when I was out getting water. They are always snooping. I heard reports of men beaten up during a wing shift …

    Nothing changes here.

Sean McKenna (the former hunger-striker) is back in H-4, apparently still a bit shaky but alive and still recovering, and hopefully he will do so to the full.

Mhúscail mé leis an gealbháin ar maidin agus an t-aon smaointe amháin i mo cheann – seo chugat lá eile a Roibeard. Cuireann é sin amhran a scríobh mé; bhfad ó shin i ndúil domsa.

Seo é cib é ar bith.

D’ éirigh mé ar maidin mar a tháinig an coimheádóir,

Bhuail sé mo dhoras go trom’s gan labhairt.

Dhearc mé ar na ballai, ‘S shíl mé nach raibh mé beo,

Tchítear nach n-imeoidh an t-iffrean seo go deo.

D’oscail an doras ‘s níor druideadh é go ciúin,

Ach ba chuma ar bith mar nach raibheamar inár suan.

Chuala mé éan ‘s ni fhaca mé geal an lae,

Is mian mór liom go raibh me go doimhin foai,

Ca bhfuil mo smaointi ar laethe a chuaigh romhainn,

S cá bhfuil an tsaol a smaoin mé abhí sa domhain,

Ni chluintear mo bhéic, ‘s ní fheictear mar a rith mo dheor,

Nuair a thigeann ar lá aithíocfaidh mé iad go mor.

Canaim é sin leis an phort Siun Ní Dhuibir.

    Translated this reads as follows:

I awoke with the sparrows this morning and the only thought in my head was: here comes another day, Bobby — reminding me of a song I once wrote a long time ago.

    This is it anyway:

I arose this morning as the Screw came,

He thumped my door heavily without speaking,

I stared at the walls, and thought I was dead,

It seems that this hell will never depart.

The door opened and it wasn’t closed gently,

But it didn’t really matter, we weren’t asleep.

I heard a bird and yet didn’t see the dawn of day,

Would that I were deep in the earth.

Where are my thoughts of days gone by,

And where is the life I once thought was in the world.

My cry is unheard and my tears flowing unseen,

When our day comes I shall repay them dearly.

I sing this to the tune Siun Ní Dhuibir.

Bhí na heiníní ag ceiliúracht inniú. Chaith ceann de na buachaillí arán amach as an fhuinneog, ar a leghad bhí duine éigin ag ithe. Uaigneach abhí mé ar feadh tamaill ar tráthnóna beag inniú ag éisteacht leis na préacháin ag screadáil agus ag teacht abhaile daobhtha. Dá gcluinfinn an fhuiseog álainn, brisfeadh sí mo chroí.

Anois mar a scríobhaim tá an corrcrothar ag caoineadh mar a théann siad tharam. Is maith liom na heiníní.

Bhuel caithfidh mé a dul mar má scríobhain níos mó ar na heiníní seo beidh mo dheora ag rith ‘s rachaidh mo smaointi ar ais chuig, an t-am nuair abhí mé ógánach, b’iad na laennta agus iad imithe go deo anois, ach thaitin siad liom agus ar a laghad níl dearmad deánta agam orthu, ta siad i mo chroí — oíche mhaith anois.

    (Translated, this reads as follows:)

The birds were singing today. One of the boys threw bread out of the window. At least somebody was eating!

I was lonely for a while this evening, listening to the crows caw as they returned home. Should I hear the beautiful lark, she would rent my heart. Now, as I write, the odd curlew mournfully calls as they fly over. I like the birds.

Well, I must leave off, for if I write more about the birds my tears will fall and my thoughts return to the days of my youth.

They were the days, and gone forever now. But I enjoyed them. They are in my heart — good night, now.

As we continue to bask (and not Basque, as my phone is telling me) in the latest triumph over the basket (Basquette?) of @rses, let’s remember…we have another game coming up against a bunch of absolute thugs and that our next game will be just as tough. Our players will receive no protection and referees will be auditioning for 15th April over the next few weeks. A big improvement is needed in our defensive performance to make sure any misguided title race chat does not resurface.

But once you’ve remembered that you can go back to basking…

  11. Good morning from a bright and slightly chilly North East Fife. Enjoyed the result on Saturday although slightly ashamed that I watched some of the game.

Win this and we have a fairly straightforward ( on paper at least) run of games, Ross Co, Dundee, Hamilton into mid April. is first game post split – w/e 14 April -cup semi wekend? Or will it be the following week? -Regardless, it will be Newco.

    The evidence is all there.

Just think itd be a good idea to resolve the issue asap before it inevitably haunts us again and people say ‘ah but you didnt say that when we were winning’ or the inevitable meltdown from others agreeing..too late.

Its not popular to say things like this when you’ve won but that doesnt mean its not true.

Brendan clearly agrees or he wouldnt have signed 2 defenders but question marks remain over them too.

Shouting doesn’t make it any more valid.

If you read my posts, ‘for the time being’ is the problem – for too many, that is until the next bad result! For you, its the day after a good result, apparently. Well, that was yesterday, wasn’t it?!

If we lose a game a lot of folk will criticise players who make mistakes. Others will defend them still and say ‘ah but you didnt say that when we were winning’. Well, here I am saying it now and have said so numerous times about Boyata.

That Rogic, Dembele and Edouard got him off the hook doesn’t dilute the truth that is staring us in the face. How much evidence do we actually need!

First goal,he was the last man, with a player bearing down on him. That is simple,Row Z.

Second goal,he was NUDGED in the box,a defender should be prepared for that, and strong enough to shrug it off. Naw,not Deadly.

Can you imagine Bobo being nudged in the box? The Hun would have bounced off him and been out for a month.

I genuinely want EVERY player we sign to be a success, but the fact that he is wearing our colours, living our dream, does not blind us to the bloody obvious. He’s everything he’s ever going to be at this stage in his career-and I agree that he worked damn hard to get into the manager’s plans,so fair play to him,and respect-but NAW.

  30. Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan on

    Good Morning,

    On Boyata and Sunday.

There are a number of issues that have to be addressed but they all come down to “How to win a game!”

Very often you hear commentators and pundits talk about the one on one battles such as between a winger and a fullback, striker and central defender and so on.

I am not sure if it was done but someone should have told Dedrick in no uncertain terms that in the first few minutes you do not attempt to play clever football at the back when defending. The job is to be big, imposing, intimidating, strong as an Ox who lets a striker know early that he will be neither bullied nor panicked so that the striker and other forwards have to work out a way past. This also reassures your team mates, especially your goalkeeper and defensive colleagues.

Irrespective of match fitness etc, Boyata should have known or been told that, especially in that early phase, there has to be no risk, blunt, physical defending and only once the game has settled down and you get a bit of time do you even think about playing the ball out from that kind of position.
