Newco games bring the best out of McGregor

254

The absence of suspended Mikael Lustig on Sunday might convince Brendan Rodgers to go with a back three of Ajer, Compper and Simunovic, with Kieran Tierney and James Forrest playing wingback rolls.  With Scott Brown, Olivier Ntcham and Moussa Dembele certain to start, and Tom Rogic looking very likely, Brendan Rodgers’ options begin to look straightforward.

He will pair any two from Scott Sinclair, Odsonne Edouard, Eboue Kouassi and Callum McGregor.  Games against Newco seem to bring out the best in Scott and Callum, but both have missed out on selection recently.  I understand the call for Odsonne to partner Moussa up front, but, given a choice, I would rather see us control midfield than worry too much about the top of the pitch.

The Ibrox surface suits Callum McGregor’s playmaking ability.  Have him in there pulling the strings.

  3. FWIW , here is my take on our next game:

    a) I wish it felt like `just another game`; but it doesn`t;

    b)I wish people believing the Media hype wouldn`t. but they do;

c)I wish it felt like a game against a new Club; but it doesn`t quite

    d) I wish beating them didn`t bother me so much; but it does.

    e) I wish it was Sunday afternoon and we have just gubbed them; but it isn`t and we haven`t (yet).

  8. I’ve no qualms with Edouard starting but I think it will be a back 3 of Ajer, Jozo and Marv, wing backs Jamesy and KT, a midfield diamond of Brown, Ntcham on the inside left, Rogic right and McGreogor asked to support and go beyond Moussa. Edouard can come on when the game has settled down a bit and spaces open up. Regards Sinclair, he hasn’t kicked a ball against them in the last 4 games. This isn’t a game for him or Kouassi.

The system above has lots of flexibility. The question is can we get up close to and support Moussa. If he gets isolated he comes short and it starts to break down. Tavernier roams forward without a care in the world, expect KT to be ravaging down that side. I predict he will score.

  9. Paul’s article reads to me as if we are planning on fielding 11 outfield players and no goalie? The 8 “certain starters”, Tom Rogic and than any 2 from….?

Now, I’m reasonably confident but I do think that sacrificing a goalkeeper is risky ;-)

I see Murty believes the SMSM hype:

“I think we’ve got attacking people who can cause people problems. You look at the pace and power we have in those areas and regardless of our opposition I think we can cause a threat. We know we have to be better without the ball, we know we have to be tighter and more compact.

But with the ball, we need to go and express ourselves and that’s something I think we have done really, really well. Recently we have been creating opportunities and people have been expressing themselves. We are going to the sharp end of the pitch and looking like scoring goals and we weren’t necessarily looking like that earlier in the season.

We have managed to get goals and we look as though we have goals coming from different angles now.”

I hope that’s his team talk sorted for him. Rodomontade will keep them believing and their disappointment afterwards will be palpable!

You missed the point about de Vries in goal. (Given Gordon’s injuries this should have been sorted).

That and the fact that the Centre Half berths should have been sorted months ago, given that Simunovic looks so unsettled.

Commper looks to lack mobility (I have seen faster Subbuteo players).

Our predictable dodgy cross field passing.

We have lacked out of sorts for months.

    I wouldn’t be surprised!

He really is between a rock and a hard place. I assume he’s not a completed buffoon and realises that attacking us for 90 minutes isn’t an option and they won’t get as many opportunities as they do against other teams.

However ra peepul will expect them to go gung ho and will expect Morelos and Windass to get plenty of goals with Cummings coming on to score even more.

They will also expect Jamie “Del Piero” Murphy to destroy us with his skill and pace. Broony and Ollie will get gubbed by Goss and Docherty.

We have no chance in their eyes!

They haven’t even considered what our attacking players will do to their defence!

    Paul,

Three in the middle should be enough to control the midfield (Brown, Ntcham, McGregor).

The choice then would be between Sinclair and Edouard (or possibly Rogic with a bit of a tweak).

I’d be tempted to go with Edouard in a 3-5-2.

Sinclair, Rogic and Roberts to come on if needed. Or even if not needed :-)

Kilmarnock’s Jordan Jones won a penalty after being challenged by Aberdeen’s Shay Logan and Kari Arnason

Kilmarnock manager Steve Clarke has urged the Scottish FA to take action against Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes for saying that Jordan Jones went “down without any contact” to earn a penalty for his side.

Kris Boyd equalised from the spot as the sides fought out a 1-1 draw in their Scottish Cup quarter-final tie.

Afterwards, McInnes said, “I don’t think my players bring Jones down”.

“I thought he was out of order,” Clarke said in response.

“I thought it was a cheap shot. Of course I am not happy. Why is he allowed to come out and infer that Jordan Jones dived?

“I don’t understand why he gets away with that. Surely the authorities have to ask him to explain himself?”

  22. I feel it is not about formations and Tactics. If we have Tierney in midfield or in a back four. It is about how we go about the game. Our attitude needs to be right. It needs to be like Zenit home. We need to play to our strengths.

If we play against Sevco like 1st Half last week, then, we get beat. Tactics don’t matter.

We need hard work, resilience and play at a high tempo. If we do that we will blow them away.

First to every ball, strong in the tackles, support your team mates. The Fans will back them and we can prove why we are the champions.

I don’t usually engage in team selectios and tactics, don’t know enough about the game.

However, I feel if we go with a back three, we will play into Sevco’s hands.

Mr. Murty will just dust down Big EBT’s Bumper Book of Tactics and play long diagonal balls in behind our wide defenders.

By all means, we should force them into playing long, but we need to have full backs in position to deal with them not racing back into position.

But that’s just me. Others will know better.

  27. If Brendan has confidence in Marvin Compper I think he will go with a back 3. If he goes with the back 4 it’s probably an indication he’s not comfortable with him as yet.
