No trophy left behind

371

Sunday’s trip to Perth is the only away game Celtic have this month. With three home points from Livingston in the bag, we have home games against both St Mirren in the Scottish Cup and  Aberdeen – who are going through one of their more interesting periods, before the Hampden League Cup Final against our new adversaries.

By winning on Wednesday St Johnstone avoided defeat for the first time in eight games; this does not make a summer. St Mirren have everything going for them, although they will not look forward to returning to Celtic Park, the venue of their worst result of the season only two weeks ago.

One of the truisms in football is ‘it’s all about the next game’. I know this and so it’s with a bit of trepidation that I suggest we might want to plan for the three fixtures before Hampden as a group. We have a new striker, defensive mid and central defender all needing game time to get up to full fitness. I’m also sure Sead Haksabanovic could do with 60 minutes playing time. Use these games to make sure we arrive at Hampden with as strong a squad as possible.  The bitter anquish at only winning five of the last six League Cups cannot be smoothed over.  There should be no trophy left behind.

Playing in such a weak league has few advantages, but being able to build an early lead and then develop players is surely one of them.

I was at that game at front of enclosure under the main stand. Greig’s penalty came in the 88th minute at 0-0. Gutted.

I went to Airdrie v Celtic in the Scottish Cup in the early 70s. There was a massive crowd at the Celtic turnstiles but no queues. Just a mass of people pushing towards the turnstiles. I found myself against the wall about 10 yards away from the turnstiles. I climbed up and over the wall, straight into the arms of a copper. He took me to the big gate, intent on ejecting me. He told a sreward to open the gate.

“You’re joking aren’t you,” said the steward. “There’s thousands of them out there.”

The copper looked at me and said, “It’s your lucky day pal. On your way and behave yourself.”

Can’t remember actually missing a game though.

  2. Watching the Everton game. 6 minutes of ET as Everton lead Arsenal 1-0.

If the score stays the same then Man City will get a mega boost and a mega incentive for their game tomorrow.

Playing second is not always a disadvantage.

    HH and COYBIG tomorrow.

As I keep asking. If it’s such a big disadvantage, how come we keep winning when we play second?

According to you am I not to be a member of the Scottish Green Party?

  7. Tom McLaughlin,

Totally agree. Not everything in life is designed to thwart Celtic.

Regardless if the huns win or lose today we will aproach the game in a totally professional manner. Our excellent manager will see to that.

However supporters are the lifeblood of our game and they are being treated abysmally by these 12.00 hrs kick offs. The Drumchapel bus is leaving @ 09.45 hrs.

What unearthly time will supporters be travelling at from further afield.

    HH.

PS : ill struggle to travel to McChuills for KO.

That’s twice I’ve asked that question and twice I’ve been told if I need that answered then God help us, or words to that effect.

Maybe one day someone who knows the answer will offer it instead of people without an answer throwing up a snokescreen

  12. Tom I’ve answered you at least twice about this – scoreboard pressure. The only other time Newco lost was against St Johnstone after we went further ahead on the Saturday. It’s pressure that they feel much more than us. We’ll agree to disagree on this one.

Myself and others have put forward reasons for why playing your own fixtures in advance of your main rival might be advantageous.

Maybe you haven’t seen those posts.

    Though I suspect you have.

  16. On the argument about playing first ..advantage..not advantage……don’t think I’ve ever seen a team choose to go second at pens in a shoot out…surely similar 🤔

  17. Fav. Uncle: Pity you won’t make it over but we’ll meet again. Congratulations in advance. 36 & counting for me.

Try a dictionary and look up – ‘ despite ‘

17 verse 6 (so far) is an imbalance no matter how you slice it. The only outstanding question aside from your repetitive Uber supporter mantra, where everything is fair in all matters of Celtic doesn’t really affect Celtic’s form.

By the time the season ends we still won’t know who decides on the imbalance which will be higher, or why it exists? If you go from 9 points to 6 overnight, your’e disadvantaged at least overnight.

The question remains why the imbalance?

  19. I used to work in the Inland Revenue in Waterloo Street in the late ‘60s. The Admiral was next door to our building which I think, was called Douglas House or Montrose House. I spent a lot of time in The Admiral back in the day. Very fond memories of the pub. It’s a real shame that it’s closing especially as it seems to be thriving and run well.
