Nothing to lose rubbish, we have everything to lose

318

I don’t subscribe to the ‘Nothing to lose’ lobby, who seem to think underdogs can play free from the burden of having to win.  Let me remind you where this Celtic team have come from…..

Celtic came through two qualifying rounds to reach the Champions League group stage, as bottom seed.  The collected 10 points in six incredibly tight games to finish above Benfica and Spartak Moscow to reach the knock out stage, losing only twice.

The margin between success (first or second place) and failure (bottom) was incredibly tight.  We are now 10 games into our European campaign and in the knock out stage for the first time in five years.  For Celtic, these opportunities are few and far between.

The team with nothing to lose is Juventus.  They are Italian champions and will be so again this year.  Their major competitors, Inter and Milan, occupy fourth and fifth place in the league respectively.  Napoli are the only team within 9 points of the top and they only won the league when Diego was strutting his stuff.

Juventus will be in the Champions League group stage next season and will be seeded to qualify for the knock out stage.  It could easily be the quarter finals before they face another tier-one side.  In other words, if Juve lost this tie, there will soon be another chance.

No one in the Celtic team knows if they will have another opportunity to reach deep inside the Champions League.

Nothing to lose?  For Forster, Matthews, Hooper, Lustig, Samaras, Commons, Wanyama and Mulgew, this is the greatest chance of their professional lives.  Win it and they become celebrated across Europe.  They before more valuable professionals, likely to earn bigger contracts in the future.  They have everything to lose.

On Friday 1 March the Lisbon Lions will be at the Kerrydale Suite providing commentary and answering questions on their magnificent European Cup final win in 1967. This has never happened in 46 years since that game, to say it is a unique opportunity fails to tell the whole story.

The event is part of our 125 4 125 campaign – central to reinvigorating the charitable spirit which is part of the club we love. It will be a family occasions, tickets are available at £10 for adults and £5 for children. The night has been organised by several fans working in conjunction with the people at Celtic Charity, so please do your best to support this great occasion. Individual tickets or tables are available, details here.

I’ll see you there.

    You are,of course,correct.

We came into this competition, and barring winning it,we will leave with nothing.

The team have clearly exceeded expectations-I,for one would happily have settled for 3rd place, and called it progress.

However,we are now in a different place. Earlier was The Champions League, group stages.

Now it is serious,it is The European Cup-I’ve nicked that from someone else, and I apologise for not remembering who!

PAUL67 is right, this is a chance in a lifetime for our players. Aye,we might do it again, but it is not expected.

It is very much expected for the Juve players.

I doubt the stands will be full of fans giving the players a hard time should we not do as well as hoped, because we have already done better than expected.

Though I canny say the same for the auld eejit in 111 who has the seats next to us and thinks Samaras’ first name is FFS…..

    Re Uefa website

Even better if you have 2 means to access the Internet as earlier unbeknown to me I gained access to the application page and while I was working on another page the session timed out and I was back at square one

Better to have the page in your sight at all times rather than suffer the frustration of being timed out

“oose” – what a great word. It rolls off the tongue but you don’t see it written down (typed, printed out, displayed .. whatever) too often. In fact it’s right up there with “sclaff” in my book.

been months and months old pal. Enjoy your day and evening tomorrow. Unlikely our defence will prove good enough to keep a clean sheet in the away tie, and I suspect we will concede 1 tomorrow, so over 2 games we will need to score probably 3 times to make it through. Is that possible? Well 2 tomorrow is not impossible, and we have got into a nice habit of scoring away, so never say never. I will take a 2-1 tomorrow and hope for a 1-1 in Italy. Anyhow, that’s my opinion only and I hope Lenny’s bhoys rout them 3-0 and 1-2.! Beating Juve 5-1 would be a decent 2 days work don’t ya think:-)

How are you keeping anyway? Behaving yourself? (daft question of the day candidate)

  21. When the UEFA cup final was at Hampden I was asked by a colleague of mine to apply for tickets for the game as he is a Spurs fan. I got offred tickets but knocked them back as Spurs had been knocked out.

I hope that stands me in good stead if Celtic make the final.

  22. Imagine you were a footballer who was considered comfortably the best in your position of all the teams in Scotland. Consider also that you were, in fact, so good that a Club was willing to pay you between £500,000 and £1,500,000 per year to play for them. Consider ,finally , that not only were you that good but so was everyone else in your team. Would you not be right to fear no one? Would you not be right to believe that your team could beat any team you faced?

Such is the reality for the team who will run out in front of 60,000 people tomorrow evening. Nearly every one of those 60,000 souls will be supporting your team, our team. If the crowd can believe as our manager does and as our players do, then another wonderful, magnificent night is assured at the home of The Glasgow Celtic.

Fair comment, just a bit concerned that we all go off on a huge downer should the result go against us, when in actual fact regardless we should be proud of our achievement in qualifying from the CL group stages. A fantastic effort not to be downgraded just because we come up short against one of the games heavyweights, not that I think we will, at least I’m quite confident about the home leg.
