Odsonne the target on day football holds its breath

1146

Celtic’s objective for today is to add a striker, who is happy to take his chances at Celtic behind Leigh Griffiths and Moussa Dembele. The target (as you will know) is 19-year-old France youth international Odsonne Edouard.

We have agreed a loan with Celtic having the option to buy for an eight-figure sum. There remains a complication between player and current club, Paris Saint-Germain, which all parties are hoping will resolve, but this one has the potential to go to the wire.

Odsonne is regarded by manager, scouts and coaches at Celtic as an absolute star. He made four starts for Toulouse in Ligue 1 last season before off-field matters got in the way (which I’ll not trivialise, but we’ll deal with at a later date). He is a player who needs to leave Paris for new influences in a fresh environment. The move to Celtic could be the break he needs.

The initial loan period gives the player a chance to resolve any legacy issues before Celtic commit to breaking transfer records.

The manager has been impressed by Odsonne’s attitude thus far. He knows he would be the junior party in a three-man attacking roster, and that his objectives for the season is to press those above him.

In the coming weeks, our fit 19-year-old central defender will be joined by three more-senior team-mates. Competing with Kristoffer Ajer for fourth spot is only likely to be attractive to another teenage prodigy. I don’t expect movement on this front.

At this stage of the window, the chances of anyone near the first team being allowed to leave are reducing, but there are a lot of worried teams with >£100m of TV money out there. Enough to fund transfer fees and provide wages to unsettle the most faithful of stalwarts.

There will be calls made, you can be sure of that. I know some people at Celtic Park who will be happy people after 23:00 tonight, when the window in England closes, without any of our players being unsettled.

Enjoy your day, let’s hope Odsonne’s details are sorted and no one waves £50k per week-type money before our players.

    What’s all the ‘greeting’ aboot?

i’m happy with our squad from last season…. and I’m drlighted with the additions! I would’ve liked more, obviously. I would love Holly Willoughby to read me bedtime stories (keeping it clean), but life just doesn’t work that way. Unfortunately.

I’m more than happy with our squad, compared to last year. To me, that’s enough.

All the sulky wee board-hating, pyjama-wearing never-happy weans……. chill out until next transfer window. Until then though, chill and be happy and grateful.

HH! I’d say I’m off oot but I’d be lying. I’m hibernating.

If I remember correctly CCE was the poster involved in the row which resulted in the two guys getting their red cards. Very similar insults.

  3. Watching the France holland game. Pogba looks a skillful and confident and purposeful footballer. For united he looks like an athlete who plays football. What is it about the British game that seems to suck the joy out of so many skillful players?

  5. Best transfer window I can remember since the elation of the doomed Robbie Keane circus.

Sheer quality in through the beautiful front facade of paradise:

The mercurial Paddy, the simmering midfield general, Sam Jackson (disguised as some French kid called Ntcham – greta actor…), the SPL’s best other in the goblinesque industry of the interchangeable Hayes, the youthful promise and dynamism of Benyu – who the boss reckons is first-team ready – and now the French firecracker crackshot goal-sniffer from PSG; yet anothe rhungry young player who will look to impress europe on the Celtic Park stage.

    Quality kept against the odds:

Jozo – either stymied by Celtic or outpriced; yet looking at that bedlamite’s basket of wacky funsters down south we must have been asking for at least 20 mill. Nevertheless, Jozo will be the mainstay of our defence for another tilti at the CL.

Armstrong – Great hair. Surprised he eventually settled on a mutually beneficial contract, but then he’s a clever bhoy who will hopefully give us another Lord Flasheart season and a bundle of cash next summer when he gets his EPL move.

Only downside – Rivaldo Coetzee. Looked like another VVD/Beckenbaeur in prospect but what ya gonna do about a dodgy foot?

A prospect like him was our only relaistic hope of a quality CB in. No established player worth their salt was going to accept playing backup to our current first-choice pairing of jozo and Dedryck, both fit for the group stages.

Add in Erik, and you’re trying to hook a proven pro to warm the bench?

No chance – anyone who knows their onions will tell you an understanding at CB has to be built, and is more difficult than anywhere else on the pitch; you’re talking a fine art of movement and timing; up front natural instinct comes into play when quality players link up; at the back it’s about time on the pitch together and getting the drills right for picking -up and calling the line, organising defensive duties around you.

    Nearly got a full house.

As it is, we have added to our arsenal; a nightmare for SPL sides, a ballsy prospect for the CL – looks like we’re going to have a right go at them.

Can’t remember a better time in my life watching the Hoops.

Events like the Centenary season and May ’98 are marvellous landmarks; even the McCann revolution in ’94 was still accompanied by stress and uncertainty; these days it’s like being on a Celtic-party super-airliner, ever onwards and upwards since BR took the helm and the entrie Celtic movement kicked into a higher gear.

We have the formula now to maintain a high level of competition every season; seem to be positioning ourselves for the best shot at CL qualification we can muster when the UEFA pigs tilt the trough towards the bloaters of the big leagues.

Transfer fees for anyone outside the cartel’s brothel will become a thing of the past/pointless – they can outbid anybody; what we do – initial loans, hungry prospects to establish and sell, will help us get to what I believe will be a fiscal position in between the CL goliaths and the tier of selling clubs below us; we’ll become one of the middle-men, able to compete on wages, able to offer the showroom of Europan competition.

Not what we ultimately desire, but somewhere we must position ourselves until the invite to the big table/the cross-nation league shakeup which redefines the marketplace.

The fact I’m even able to speculate that Celtic name will remain on the lips of europe’s players is a miracle; an absolutely unimaginable concept to us 24 years ago. Feels like I’m living in my own wildest Celtic dream; will probably wake up and realise I’m stuck between a boycott or standing in the jungle howling at the families on a rain-soaked night v Kiillie.

FYI I chose the jungle, with another 8,000 reluctant duty-bound, watched a shite game (0-0 or 1-1) and managed a wan smile at a fox chanking across the park, sobbed at how desperately forlorn the whole thing had become and seethed at those smug bastard families looking down their noses at us from the directors’ box with their tartan blankets pressed against their laps by their wringing hands; wringing away our cash, that is, and the lifeblood of the club.

And now, 2017, here we go for 10 in a row. Magic. Some of ye don’t know ye’re born, or arrived at the party too late.

    ;))

I was there in `65 when Jock arrived .

My feeling of optimism today matches how I felt then.

The difference is that now , for Celtic , Europe is the only game in town .

So much so that ten in a row , the Holy Grail for many , now has become a minor issue for me .

It suggests that success in Scotland matters.

The Scottish game and its fuhrers don`t deserve that recognition

Yes. Its nice to rub the hun noses in it . :-)

However , the SPL title is simply a route to the C.L.

  25. BRTH at 10:56pm,

That was a very heartfelt and moving post about your friend….am glad he was successful….for his sake.

I’ve recently completed a job placement at Langside Jobcentre….and I have to admit that the volume of claimants, who can only be described as the most vulnerable in our society, who had been forced off of ESA, was disturbing.

In fact I was so sickened by some of the stories I heard that I am actively looking to volunteer with Citizens Advice, with a view to specialising in Welfare Rights.

We can, and should, do everything within our power to help those in society who most need it…..as for government policy…..that’s a whole other debate…..
