Odsonne the target on day football holds its breath

1146

Celtic’s objective for today is to add a striker, who is happy to take his chances at Celtic behind Leigh Griffiths and Moussa Dembele. The target (as you will know) is 19-year-old France youth international Odsonne Edouard.

We have agreed a loan with Celtic having the option to buy for an eight-figure sum. There remains a complication between player and current club, Paris Saint-Germain, which all parties are hoping will resolve, but this one has the potential to go to the wire.

Odsonne is regarded by manager, scouts and coaches at Celtic as an absolute star. He made four starts for Toulouse in Ligue 1 last season before off-field matters got in the way (which I’ll not trivialise, but we’ll deal with at a later date). He is a player who needs to leave Paris for new influences in a fresh environment. The move to Celtic could be the break he needs.

The initial loan period gives the player a chance to resolve any legacy issues before Celtic commit to breaking transfer records.

The manager has been impressed by Odsonne’s attitude thus far. He knows he would be the junior party in a three-man attacking roster, and that his objectives for the season is to press those above him.

In the coming weeks, our fit 19-year-old central defender will be joined by three more-senior team-mates. Competing with Kristoffer Ajer for fourth spot is only likely to be attractive to another teenage prodigy. I don’t expect movement on this front.

At this stage of the window, the chances of anyone near the first team being allowed to leave are reducing, but there are a lot of worried teams with >£100m of TV money out there. Enough to fund transfer fees and provide wages to unsettle the most faithful of stalwarts.

There will be calls made, you can be sure of that. I know some people at Celtic Park who will be happy people after 23:00 tonight, when the window in England closes, without any of our players being unsettled.

Enjoy your day, let’s hope Odsonne’s details are sorted and no one waves £50k per week-type money before our players.

  1. Whilst it would have been nice to have got a centre half signed that would have allowed Erik to move on, that can wait until January. If our first choice back 4 is Lustig Suminovic Boyata Tierney then that’s a new back 4 from last season’s CL campaign. In fact, in none of the six games last season did any more than two of the four play together. Dedryck didn’t play in any of the games, Jozo only in the last two and KT in the first three. Only Lustig was the constant. We have a stronger defence going into this campaign than last, yes it could have been stronger but as long as we keep improving and progressing then can’t complain too much (won’t stop the usual suspects though).

  2. Good morning fellow CQN’ers (in general eejgits) and my comrades in TPSBBBBHPWDS.

As the window of transfer activity closed with a mere squib as the PLC once again destroyed the clubs ambition and the real, honest supporters hope with it TPSBBBHPWDS slammed, with great vengeance and furious anger, our club house door. Unfortunately door broke from its hinges so we have applied to PLC to have it fixed and rightly so.

All we needed Peter was one more brick, one measly little paving stone to secure the defence. You let us down, AGAIN. We didn’t even ask for a heated brick, just a sting sturdy reliable stone. That’s it. That’s all!

Anyways until we meet again in the not too distinant future we offer our best wishes, hopes and support for the Bhoys and will watch through our fingers our injury prone defenders. Our nails will be worn down in anticipation.

common sense policing at the fitba

Unusual to see such logic and reasoning from a Police officer, can we put this officer in charge of football policing ?

    https://amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/aug/31/policed-football-fans-enemy-manchester-city-bournemouth-police-stewards

To be clear, pitch invasions are wrong, but there is a difference between a pitch invasion and joyful celebrations momentarily spilling over the white line and on to the turf – and that is where a bit of common sense is needed.

It is always interesting to watch the reaction of stewards and police officers when a goal is scored. I see fear, anger, aggression, sometimes panic. For many, it seems the overriding desire is to stop a perfectly normal and natural human reaction to a rare event, rather than taking a few steps back, a few deep breaths, remaining calm, and observing and giving half a minute for things to calm down.

And the crowd almost always will calm down, especially where the situation isn’t aggravated by stewards and police officers diving in and unnecessarily intervening. When players go to their own fans to celebrate, don’t worry – there’s nothing to worry about. The fans will be safely back in their seats in a minute, and the players will be getting on with the game.

The reaction of stewards and police officers to goal celebrations is symptomatic of a wider problem with the rules and regulations that govern football fans, and the way that authorities treat them as a group. Many regulations apply only to football fans, and please, don’t try to claim we all deserve it. We don’t.

Extract below chimes with our OBAF and the shame game

The Football (Offences) Act 1991 was written in the flawed and biased times after the Hillsborough disaster, when the public were conned by a tabloid newspaper’s lying headlines and the perception supported by politicians of the time that all football fans were “scum”, capable of urinating on dying fans.

Those lies are perpetuated in the Football (Offences) Act and the underlying sentiment of dislike and suspicion of football fans is preserved in its use by the police and stewards across the country. We’re all hooligans, deep down, goes the thinking.

Quite why anyone would slate those attending Celtic Park, say the game is rigged then throw a tantrum at us not signing a centre half… logic, who needs it!

At least posters like NegAnon and Ernie can reason, TGM has a scatter gun and throws a strop at anyone who disagrees. And has done so since appearing on CQN, a relative new poster compared to most on here. Motives?

He said his critics were out yesterday – actually, he replied to my question to KevJungle, requesting confirmation that he stopped attending CP in 2005. Now why would The Green Man take offence at that!

This seemed to set him on a 10 hour rant culminating in the posts at the above link.

Good to see Natknow was also able to show him up for what he is.

    Imposter.

  8. Morning all

Not been on in since the morning of the game in Trondheim. Seems to be the same sweetness and light about here that made me take my sabbatical. I have entered into slanging matches with fellow posters so who am I to criticise others?

Mixed feelings about the outcome of the window . Not losing any of the main players from last season – including, eventually, wee Paddy- is good and Olivier Ntcham may be our highest quality signing since Virgil Van Dijk but the lack of inward movement in respect of the defence is not good as even before the injuries that beset Erik S and Dedryk B this was the area of the team which needed most strengthening. Bayern and PSG would almost certainly be too good whoever we signed anyway- the latter club operates in a world that has two extra noughts to our own- but a week on Tuesday could be an even tougher night for us than it should have been, We’ll see, As for our other signings I have seen nothing in Jonny Hayes and Kendai Bunyu – so far- to suggest they’ll bring anything to our team that was not already there. I know nothing of Edouard Odsonne beyond what I have read in the media, I wish him well.

I am sorry to sound a bit negative but despite two very good European nights and a couple of handy domestic shows this has been a slightly uneasy start to the season and the off-field distractions have not helped my sense of unease. I think that eventually this season will prove to be a happy one but also that the next two months could prove very bumpy. Life is not, despite what the old song says, a bowl of cherries,

  9. I couldn’t be bothered reading back but I gather last night on here was even worse than much of yesterday.

Personally, given our temporary problems at CB, I would have been delighted with a signing like Coetzee or Caulker but whether that would have made a real difference against the likes of PSG or Bayern Munich, I doubt.

We have strengthened in other areas. Excellent.

Let’s enjoy our team again this season.

  10. Marrakesh Express on

The more I look at our CL group the better (and tougher) it gets.

The pot 1 team is a perennial European juggernaut out the same box as Real and Barca. Pot 2 PSG are blowing apart even EPL transfer kitties to join that elite.

Pot 4 Celtic won the big cup before Bayern and can offer the best atmosphere/fan experience in the competition. Our history is also on a level of Pot 2, if there was such a ranking.

On to the Belgians. Anderlecht surprisingly have five European trophies if you add two supercups to their two ECWC’s and one UEFA cup. Very impressive for a club who’s stadium never held much more than 30k.

It’s not been referred to as the group of death but certainty extremely attractive even for the neutrals.

This is exactly were we want to be.

The £1.4bn spent by Premier League clubs this summer eclipsed the previous record of £1.165bn and is almost £1bn more than was paid out in transfer fees just five years ago, with clubs each spending an average of £71m (up from £58m in 2016).

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

How can Celtic compete with that?

Transfer windae lunacy, CQN used to be about competing and ridiculing lazy journalism, posters on here slavishly commentating ad fighting over MSM hyperbole nonsense over transfer targets ?? laughable idiocy from all who indulged

As your figures point out the cash rich elite domination is total from over the border it means we are just pawns in their game, football sold its soul, the dressing room would have been a tough place for Brendan and he will be mightily relieved with C/L qualification secured, transfer windae closed and hopefully injury list clearing up, time to back a superb manager for another treble and some exciting European nights under the lights

The more I hear about Odsonne Edouard the more exciting it is. I’d say he’ll get plenty game time. BR may even experiment with two up top at certain times… he’s alluded to that once or twice.

Would have liked a CB, maybe cover for LB and Gk, but if the manager can trust young players like Miller and Ralston then so can we. There is a lot there to work with and those players have all the basics.

I think BR has earned our trust and knows what hes doing.

  22. Got to admit to being a bit concerned about our central defence , it’s alright to say that dedryk , Eric and joso are nearing full fitness , but it’s not unthinkable for those guys to break down , or sustain another injury , leaving us with a makeshift backlne to face the upcoming challenges , I feel we have a chance to grab third place ,and European football after Christmas , but I would say that depends on our central defence staying fit . Big joso worries me even more , I may well be wrong but I don’t feel he wants to be with us , and if true about him declaring himself unfit to face Astana ,when the medical staff thought he was , well that to me confirms my fears . I would love ve to be wrong ,as I like the big man and dedryk together . Still to late to do anything about it now . Brendan and his staff will know the score , and if they think that joso future isn’t going to be with the celts , then they have time to source others . BTW the same applies to stewart Armstrong ,who imho hasn’t cemented his desire to commit to the team .

Normally I’d agree, but as has been pointed out, the guy in question is a loose cannon and thinks he has free reign to swear and abuse others who even ask a simple question of him.

His agitating and scatter gun approach add nothing to the blog. It has been this way since he started posting, relatively recently compared to most on here.

  24. Well, glad that’s over – the howling nighshift as well as the windae. Seriously worried about the mental health of one or two on here. DD and BMCUWP do a good job of trying to keep their buddies under control, but it would take all of BRTH’s skills (10:36 for those who haven’t read it) to mollify the usual suspects. AoW (12:14) offered really good advice- take heed, my friends in Celtic. Don’t really want to lose you from the blog. As for the window, yeah, we’ve come out of it intact and stronger- good enough for me.Didn’t want Neymar and a £30m Johny Evans anyway.

BTW – had 30+ years of dealing with Attendance Allowance/DLA/ PIP tribunals to know that common sense has never applied.

  25. garygillespieshamstring on

Good window for me. No big players out. Paddy back, a bit more cover up front. Shame the big guy failed the medical but I doubt he would have made much of a difference to the outcome of the PSG game. Dedryk should be back in place before the Anderlecht game, which is the importantnt one for our chances of Europe post Christmas.

Can’t help wondering if the spec given to the scouts when looking for the new striker was “find me a a guy who can shoot from distance”.
