One day in Fife

519

Over 70 CQN’ers gathered in Aberdour, Fife, on Friday for our eighth annual charity golf day.  As before, the day was hugely successful.  Both those there on the day, and hundreds more who contributed beforehand, raised over £6,000 since we kicked off the summer’s fundraising activity in May.

This year LIvingston manager and former Celtic player, John Hughes, gave his time to entertain us with a mixture of great anecdotes and outrageous anecdotes.  The big man spoke warmly of his time at Celtic, the joy of signing and working for Tommy Burns, that goal at Ibrox, and how he still benefits from his time learning from Tommy.

Many sincere thanks to Taggsy, BlantyreKev, Jonnybhoy, Barassiebhoy for organising an excellent event yet again.  A special mention for Oldtim, for more than I am prepared to tell you, and to everyone who contributed to an excellent Celtic occasion.

Forgive me but this may be an apt time for a repost from February for a variety of reasons.

    2 February, 2012 at 23:18

    Good evening,

This 24 hours cannot go by without my making comment.

I have always thought that the name Angelo Dundee was a bit daft! Born in Philadelphia as Angelo Marena in a really good tough area, it seems slightly illogical for an Italian type to change his name to Dundee. The reason for doing so was simple– his older brother boxed under the name Joe Dundee! His other brother- Chris– also took the name Dundee and opened the famous Fifth Street Gym in Miami. Angelo followed and had taken the Dundee surname by the time he did his military service. Joe Dundee and Chris Dundee sound ok– but— Angelo???

There will be many eulogies about this guy. How he was in Ali’s corner for all but two of his fights– he was in Jimmy Ellis’ corner when Ali beat him. About how he was a master, a great motivator, a wise guy and wheeler-dealer to an extent.

There will be tales of cutting Ali’s gloves after our ‘Enery knocked the young Clay onto the seat of his pants, how he told Sugar ray at the end of the Twelfth round “You’re blowin it son- you’re blowin it!”– with the result that Ray finally landed on Tommy Hearns supposed glass jaw knocking him out. By the way, if Hearns had a glass jaw then it was the bravest Glass Jaw in Boxing as it went to war with everyone of note. Ray left the ring with his eye socket the size of an egg that night and would bear permanent damage.

All in all, Dundee looked after 15 world champions– but perhaps more importantly, he was seen as a nice guy, a good guy, a decent guy. One of those who made boxing a great sport– even though there is always something immoral about seeing two guys do their damndest to knock lumps out of one another.

Howard Cossell, the legendary boxing commentator once said that he would trust Dundee with his own son. Bert Sugar- possibly the greatest boxing writer in the states- pays testament to Dundee’s standing as a good guy.

When I was growing up I had a real interest in boxing and boxers. This interest extended to the trainers– legendary guys such as Dundee, Eddie Futch, Yank Durham, and Emmanuel Steward and his Kronk gym, and maybe lastly Teddy Atlas.

Now, I couldn’t name a major boxing trainer. I can name loads of spivs that put on second class fights featuring third class fighters— but no great trainers, and no great contests between goliaths where you could never be sure who would win because each man had the armour on the day to demolish the other if they got in first.

Now if you want to see big heavyweight hitting in torrid contest you look for Messrs Nadal, Djokovic, Federer and Murray. Like Boxers of old you wonder. Is Federer on the slide after years at the top? What about Nadal– how will he deal with not being top dog? If Novak drops his level even by a little will Murray have the beating of him and will he one day get his time at the summit? Each man has the ability to beat the other, but one reigns supreme for a period and all others, whilst good are just not at their level. These are the equivalents of Ali, Frazier, Foreman and Norton. They give their all– and it shows.

And in their corners– and in the corners of other Tennis players before them you now get the names of Trainers you recognise. Bolitieri, Lendl, Gullickson, Tiriac and so on. Big names with big reputations.

With the passing of Dundee I wonder if the age of the great trainer has gone too. The end of an era and the partial death of a kind of man whose likes and time we will not see again– at least in boxing circles.

Angelo managed 15 world champions. That is no mean feat. I like to hear of guys who come from tough neighbourhoods, who turn out nice guys, make something of themselves by making something of others. There is a nobility in that line of work and that type of life.

So there I am tonight, thinking, I must write something about Dundee for CQN as he is a dying breed– if not now an extinct species– when I learn something new. I love learning something new– it thrills me to bits sometimes.

What if I told you of another trainer, who is still alive and well and who has trained not 15 but 26 world champions?

Bloody marvellous is my thought. Yet, you are likely to never have heard of him at all unless you follow certain events rather closely.

What if I also told you, that he was a 63 year old Patrician monk from Cork who arrived at St Patrick’s high school in Iten in the Kenyan Highlands with the sole intention of teaching geography for a bit? Oh and when he arrived he knew precisely sod all about coaching anything at all– let alone distance running?

His name is Brother Colm O’Connell and for two years he taught beside an athletics coach called Pete Foster– brother of Brendan. When Pete was leaving he suggested that the holy man take up his position as Athletics coach, much to the incredulity of the cork man. He knew nothing about running and was as rotund as Friar Tuck!

However, within a few short years he had developed a reputation in Kenya who at that time had at least two world class athletes. The Priest was asked to pick and manage a team for the junior world athletics championships. He picked only 9 athletes– and returned with 9 medals!

Since then he has trained 4 Olympic Gold medallists, 26 world champion gold medallists and countless others– all from one we town in Kenya. The Kenyan authorities have opened over 100 training schools based on his methods and practices, and some of the UK team are already out there copying and learning what the “old man” has now taught for over thirty years. Coaches and journalists come from all over to learn his secret. He says the secret is “there is no secret!”.

Go on Google him. Brother Colm O’Connell, St Patrick’s High School, Kenya. You will be amazed at what you find.

Angelo Dundee died today and that is a shame- I am genuinely sorry as I believe him to have been a good man. He was 90 years of age. But somewhere, somehow, there come other Dundees in different walks of life. Guys who are prepared to encourage younger people with talent, who can give them a kind word here and a kind word there and who can slit a glove and buy them time when it is needed. Most importantly, the kind of guy who a younger stronger man will listen to when they say “You’re blowin it son, you’re blowin it!”

I have no idea how you say that phrase in Masai but I would have bet my bottom dollar on it being more likely that I could speak a few words of Masai– than the greatest living athletics coach in the world being a portly monk from Cork who lives in Kenya– and who supposedly knows nothing about running— or being a coach of any sort!

  7. Would like to give an enormous thanks to the guys who came out to Aberdour on Friday!

As many guys have commented the day was an enormous success. What are the success criteria for a Celtic golf day?

Hard to come up with any order of importance but here is what matters.

Given the earlier online auction, the three we did last week, our auction and raffles on the night, we raised £6k for our good causes. Blantyrekev will no doubt get this to the exact penny and tell you those details but that’s where we’re at. The money comes from Celtic supporters. The prizes are donated by Celtic supporters. On the night we had a magnificent array of prizes, superbly managed by Jonnybhoy. I’ve organised other fundraisers and the Celtic support is a class apart. Guys come for a night out and put their hand in their pocket. It is incredible to watch.

The good name of Celtic. Guys arrive at 11am and a fair amount was consumed by the time I teed off at 12. Not by me! I was just desperate to get my ball off the ground at the 1st (I did, just, probably should have had a pint). I realised how much guys look forward to this day and how happy they all were. We are the golf club’s biggest event by some distance. We wrote cheques for over £3k to the GC. God knows what was spent over the bar. Not everyone at the GC are Celtic fans. The guys in the other visiting party certainly weren’t. Ha! But the green pound talks. Its also the case that the CQN guys are a delight to have anywhere. I know the staff at the GC enjoy our night. We’re there from 11am to 12am with never an angry word. Internet bampots? Mr Keevins, you used to enjoy events like ours. Bigots? Mr Green, you haven’t a clue.

A massive thanks to the guys who bought the online raffles. I’ll be in touch with the winners and losers as soon as I can. We did the draw on the night and I only know your ebay names, won’t disclose publicly but I’ll be in touch.

Big Yogi was fantastic. Not just on the night but since I first made contact with him his sincerity has shone. A guy who knows what matters in life. Attends club functions, loves the fans, loves what football can offer. And I don’t mean money. Great speech. He still loves that goal against the flying pig. Don’t we all!

Paul67 too. Do we take Paul for granted? Eight years ago Paul, who, unbelievably is still not a golfer, said “golf day, yeah just go for it”. Who’d have thought of the role Paul would play in the downfall of Rangers and the old media? Another great speech.

Well done to PMcG on winning. A really nice guy who put his hand in his pocket for the John Thomson canvas. Superb.

It just happened that we had the golf day on my birthday. Certainly wasn’t planned like that! Yogi told us this was his preferred date. So, I swapped my usual meal out with the mrs for one with 74 bampots. Thanks for my new putter! It’s me that’s Tom Kite, not my old putter but I look forward to giving it a go. And the new breeks and the top. Getting a lecture by Barassiebhoy on sartorial elegance though was a sore one :-)

Can’t pick anyone out for thanks because there are so many great guys. Except Blantyrekev. I was hoping to blame the stress of the day for my gash golf but then BK shoots a 77 for the best scratch score. WTF!! BK is an incredible golf day organiser and just a top, top guy.

Next year’s CQN Open is too far away. Hoping the CQN Matchplay can take off in the meantime (BK’s idea, congrats to this year’s winner, JohnannMurdoch!) and Jinkyredstar I do remember our chat and I’ll be in touch!

    Hail!Hail!

    “Hi,

I notice that in the Team Information page for your newest member you have included under ‘Past Honours’ the achievements of the former SPL team Rangers.

As far as I am aware this is still an unresolved issue.

Indeed, there is an equally valid case for the ‘Past Honours’ to read

    Played 1. Won 1 (aet).

Can I ask how you have arrived at this decision and whether have you sought the approval of other bodies involved in this matter. Particularly the SFA.

    Many thanks,

    K Trout.”

The game should start, after the whistle, with a Roar, not a crooning session.

A few yers ago, we kicked off the second half in a cup game against the Dodos, with the crowd serenading the players.

Our team were lulled into a stupor and Rickson pulled one back, during te chorus.

On Saturday we had the false start again.
