One day in Fife

519

Over 70 CQN’ers gathered in Aberdour, Fife, on Friday for our eighth annual charity golf day.  As before, the day was hugely successful.  Both those there on the day, and hundreds more who contributed beforehand, raised over £6,000 since we kicked off the summer’s fundraising activity in May.

This year LIvingston manager and former Celtic player, John Hughes, gave his time to entertain us with a mixture of great anecdotes and outrageous anecdotes.  The big man spoke warmly of his time at Celtic, the joy of signing and working for Tommy Burns, that goal at Ibrox, and how he still benefits from his time learning from Tommy.

Many sincere thanks to Taggsy, BlantyreKev, Jonnybhoy, Barassiebhoy for organising an excellent event yet again.  A special mention for Oldtim, for more than I am prepared to tell you, and to everyone who contributed to an excellent Celtic occasion.

Sorry…realise now a game of golf may have overshadowed a Celtic great celebrating his 90th Birthday.

  2. To add a little context to the comparatives on CL Champions route qualifiers

Anderlecht and Basle are the next largest clubs in the route after Celtic. Anderlechts annual budget is £27 million and Basle’s is £16 million, both converted from local currencies at today’s exchange rate.

Celtic’s is in excess of £40 million.

All budgets do not include qualifying for the Group stages of the CL. By way of further context Ajax have a budget of £49 million. Ajax are unlikely ever to play in the Champions Route qualifying as Holland have a strong coefficient with auto entry into Group stages. Should Ajax not win the erredivesee then they would have to play in the non Champions route that Moherwell are in just now

The numbers are clear, we have a fiscal advantage. We , in my view, are now following the correct strategy to deliver on that advantage. Centre Half and Centre Forward are amongst the most difficult positions for young players to dominate. I think the club recognize that, and have signed experience for there in recent years. The problem has been the experience has come at the cost of a quality defecit .

The dilemma is how to balance experience with ability and consistency. We shout for another Bobo or Mjallby or Reiper. The problem is that quality like that is likely to cost £5 million and £30 k a week. That’s not where we are , without a run of consecutive years in the CL group stages.

I don’t have an answer. I know that the likes of Bocanegra, Goian, and Mastjorovic aren’t the solution. I know that they all come with a salary cost of between £1.5 million and £3 million over the term of a 2 or 3 year contract. That strikes me as poor business benefit.

Hopefully John Park has been back to Africa and discovered a bigger version of Victor who can become the next Bobo.

I think an organiser at the back is paramount.

Our lack of goals is more about tactics than personnel.

    Our playing system is incomplete.

Our coaching limitations are an issue.

We need an experienced coach to supplement existing staff.

Our service to our forwards is woeful and reliant on hopeful cross to out manned strikers.

We are not a cohesive unit with to many gaps all over pitch.

There is no momentum from central areas most of the time allowing opponents to focus solely on crosses.

We are to reliant on individual moments rather than team strategy.

Chuck Noris’ son and Seann Fallon’s son were having an argument about whose father was the strongest. Chuck jnr says, “Do you know the North Sea? Well my dad’s the one who dug the hole for it.”

Baby Fallon replies, “That’s nothing! Do you know the Dead Sea? Well my dad’s the one who killed it.”

Totally agree. It’s been the story of the whole Rangers downfall saga – media outlets inviting swivel-eyed loons from Rangers supporters groups to give the nation the benefit of their financial and legal insight. As a strategy, it’s worked perfectly for us.

Not getting into the PL debate as easy target but try buying a bottle of water when you’re in the number 7 restaurant —- £4.00. Shocking ( enough to drive you to drink :))

  19. On the subject of preseason preparation next year, the following dates are important:

May 26 – Scottish Cup Final (and we hope to be there)

Jun 7 – Scotland World Cup qualifier in Croatia (Brown, Mulgrew, Forrest etc likely involved)

July 16/17 – Qualifying Rd 2 for Champions League (we would start there due to drop in coefficient ranking for Scottish clubs)

Effectively there will be 5 + weeks between WC and CL qualifiers, so with a 4 week preseason, effectively no summer break, possibly apart from a week’s R&R.

I think that’s the way the Neil Lennon should be thinking, with a mid-winter break to be ‘accommodated’ to freshen players up. This would allow us to hit the ground running in the CL which is vital for us from both sporting and financial reasons.

Also prevents matches fraught with danger against possible opponents half way through their season e.g. Helsinki. A management problem for Neil and his team to address then?

It is hard to understate the importance of progressing in the CL for the fans, our finances and our prospects of recruiting quality playing talent in the future.

Kilmarnock v Dundee. Likewise, Dundee’s first game up after being voted in.

Hearts v St Johnstone. Hearts have a new manager, St Johnstone have been in Europe.

Dundee United v Hibernian. First game since the fights in the stand – how will United fare against last season’s Cup finalists.

St Mirren v ICT. 4 goals, a red card, wooft!

Excellent post Barcabhoy. Agree with all that you say.

A club such as ours, restricted as it is in Scottish football, simply cannot compete with the ridiculous money flung around in Europe today.

We have got to be smart – by that I mean that we must operate under the radar – for me, John Park has done just that and has unearthed some real gems from under the noses of bigger leagues.

Imho we have a top scouting system and I hear that Celtic have very high hopes for some of the talent about to emerge from Lennoxtown.

I think it is an exciting time for Celtic and while some will go, other gems will be unearthed.

Finally, I’d like to share with you that I have stopped listening to SSB. Sad in a way as i listened to Richard Park and James Sanderson with my dad all those years ago. absolute, it has become absolute drivel and shameful in the non-stop churning out Sevco/Oldco PR nonsense. Have had enough of that – invariably would end up with me shouting at the Radio.

One call in 40 mins due to a technical fault – aye sure it was!

Also refusing to buy DR or SM – again had enough of their peddling the Govan party line. I really hope that PL has banned Ned Flanders from Celtic Park – been a long time coming.

Try and hear S Cosgrove whenever he’s on – caught last night’s Your Call – loved how he repeatedly pulled up Jabba, who seemed much more subdued than his usual arrogant superior self.

Relied on RTC daily to hear “how it really was” re the club that used to be Rangers and Sevco and CQN for my info in all things Celtic. So sorry to see RTC decide to stop – but he’s more than earned the right. He / she is a legend. Now follow The Scottish Football Monitor which has started very well and I have high hopes that it will give us, the fans, a voice and right of reply. More than happy with my choices to dump the MSM.

    Hail hail.
