O’Neills’ achievements

Delighted for Martin O’Neill on taking Ireland into the last 16 of the Euros. Since his salad days ended at Celtic, Martin’s had more downs than ups as a manager. I felt the game had moved on from him, even during his five years at Celtic, the game tactically moved away from him, but he’s one of a number of managers of small nations who have overachieved.

I’m not buying Roy Keane’s tears, though. Reaching the last 16 of the Euros is a great achievement, but he disparaged Mick McCarthy’s achievement with Ireland in going out of the 2002 World Cup in the last 16 to Spain on penalties.  Maybe it’s time for some humility from Roy.

If anything, Michael O’Neill’s achievements with the north has been even greater. Michael was mentioned as a possible Celtic manager before Brendan’s appointment, but the point was made to me, whatever he achieved in qualifying, he could be embarrassed in all three Euros games. Now he needs to beat Wales for a place in the quarter finals.

The group stages have been a delight. Some big tactical lessons for underdogs, and for teams who face 10 men behind the ball every week. If you don’t make defensive mistakes you can win any game, possession and territorial advantage is a mirage of influence.

    Re; MON..

    Italy Vs Eire..

A game that was Martins perfect Storm and a Perfect Fit to MON’s MO.. playing a Team that thought the Already had the Tie (Not the Match) Won.. Playing a Team Who thought they didn’t mead to Score but thought they would..

See Blackburn and Liverpool on the Seville Run..

I remember thinking after the Blackburn Home game that the Draw was a better Home leg result than a 2-1 Win.. As it would suit Martins tactic.. A Brian Clough return game if ever there was One..

IMHO Martin doesn’t thank Clough enough.. They are so much alike as Manages.. Imo

    Well done Martin..

    There’s only two Moussa Dembeles

    Two Moussa Dembeles….

  7. From what eye’ve seen, Spuds’ Dembélé is adept at peeling off his marker, and skinning defenders.

  8. I hear Spuds’ Dembele might be going to TRFC, with a portion of his wages picked up by MASH.

  9. Why is Krancjar being paraded with Kenny Miller and not Warburton?

And why does no one mention how weird this is?

  10. Potato puns is it?! Roasters the lot of ye. As longs as Dembelenchips in a few goals it’ll all pan out well.

  11. Paul, not sure what your blog article is all about today, but it’s your house so hey ho.

Congratulations Ireland on a fantastic achievement. The Euros are a success for the managers and players already, considering the competition in the group. I see the success as a karmic reward for the outstanding conduct of the Irish support who bring laughter and celebration wherever they go.

MON will always be a hero in my eyes. A man that put the hun in their place at a time, prior to his arrival, my life at work was made miserable by future zombies, with their gleeful co-conspirators from darn sarf joining in. Shortly after MON took the reigns at Paradise, the jibes and laughter dried up, and the English lads adopted their snide “one is as bad as the other” nugget.

Interesting to note that the three teams that qualified from Scotland’s group all made it through to the last 16 whereas the much fancied Austrian team who qualified unbeaten have crashed a d burned along with fellow qualifiers from their group Russia and Sweden gathering three points between them.Would Scotland have got out of that qualification group? A fair chance i believe.Good luck to Ireland against France

  13. MON is a great manager, I think but circumstances favoured Ireland last night. Italy were already through and knew they were getting Spain in the next round, so they lacked edge and a bit of cohesion as they rested 8 players. That’s as good an opponent as you could get in a tournament like the Euros. Had Italy needed a result the team and the performance would have been much sharper. Anyway, I hope Ireland get a result against France. Tough game though – France have great forwards. Ireland’s best chances will come from set pieces, where the French are vulnerable.

  14. I see BT are doing their best to fund Sevco,s coffers 3 live games in 9 days in July Motherwell 16th , East Stirling 22nd, Stranraer 25th
