O’Neills’ achievements

888

Delighted for Martin O’Neill on taking Ireland into the last 16 of the Euros. Since his salad days ended at Celtic, Martin’s had more downs than ups as a manager. I felt the game had moved on from him, even during his five years at Celtic, the game tactically moved away from him, but he’s one of a number of managers of small nations who have overachieved.

I’m not buying Roy Keane’s tears, though. Reaching the last 16 of the Euros is a great achievement, but he disparaged Mick McCarthy’s achievement with Ireland in going out of the 2002 World Cup in the last 16 to Spain on penalties.  Maybe it’s time for some humility from Roy.

If anything, Michael O’Neill’s achievements with the north has been even greater. Michael was mentioned as a possible Celtic manager before Brendan’s appointment, but the point was made to me, whatever he achieved in qualifying, he could be embarrassed in all three Euros games. Now he needs to beat Wales for a place in the quarter finals.

The group stages have been a delight. Some big tactical lessons for underdogs, and for teams who face 10 men behind the ball every week. If you don’t make defensive mistakes you can win any game, possession and territorial advantage is a mirage of influence.

  1. I’ve never seen Barton nor Krasnodar play.

Are they better than what we have?

Either way, the zombies have made two good signings.

Krancjar, Barton and Clit Hill have a combined age of 101.

Kenny Millers age didn’t stop him scoring against us 8 weeks ago.

  4. I too think the lead article is more of the same. I cannot remember a better time in the last 30 years than the Blesed Martins time, we were lucky to have him and he proved to be the best Hunskelper since Stein.

The WGS era brought an end to my season ticket purchase purchases, although the quality of player was only part of the reason. In the WGS era we had plenty of highlights but nothing to match the consistency of winning that Martin instilled in the team.

No need to denigrate a Celtic hero, well in my eyes anyway.

I’m confident that if we sign a lumberjack he will be ok.

Although Ronny wouldn’t be happy about him having buttered scones for tea.

Probably also some concerns about him putting on women’s clothing and hanging around in bars.

In a Season of terrible performances against weaker teams Kenny Millers scoring summed us up – Toothless.

TINYTIM. The aforementioned 3 wrinklies still have a combined age of 101, regardless of what kenny Misser did.

  12. Martin O’Neill’s success at Celtic Park had the board sitting at the top tables in Europe.

His success had English clubs after him.

It also put Brian Quinn’s nose out of joint and, in the passing of time has convinced me that, Quinn is a mason and a ‘smokescreen’ plant at UEFA who’ll pull the rug from under Res 12.

MO’N up there with Mr Stein in my eyes.

  14. To clear up any confusion Paul writes the blog posts – the ones you can comment on. No one else is involved in writing these and the clue is where it says posted by Paul67.

Paul seldom writes the CQN Magazine posts. He was involved in the Res 12 post the other day re the letter from UEFA.

So if you agree or disagree with Paul’s posts take it up with him.

WC …so does P67 get to fire the starting gun on the Revolution Raffle?

  17. Mighty Tim –

I’ll be at the memorial match as well.

I omitted to mention, the kick-off is 2pm.

I never met Mark, but my friend here in Edinburgh is a regular at St Anthony’s and knew him well.

    Hail Hail.

TBB ,,,allegedly….. Big braw word …..remember when plastic came into the world…..and I had to serve mass in brown sandals that click and clacked ……was given little ballet shoes from the German priest…. That did not end well…

But that’s another story I will have to get ACGR to edit….

  19. On the t-shirts the remaining 55 will be posted out tomorrow first class.

Some order confirmations never came though to us although the payments did so it has been a nightmare pairing all these up. It’s done now so will be with you shortly. Sorry to those who have had to wait.

The legal costs for the Res12 legal submission have now been completely covered and we are ready for what is coming next.

Great article by James Forrest, made me laugh.

  20. Sorry off topic.

Does the standing place replace a seat, i.e do the new standing places equate to an equal amount of seating? So there will be no increase in stadium capacity?

And what about Graeme Sinclair story, I spent enough time shouting at him the first time round?

  21. If Brendan’s was laying down the law is dress code,I hope the first thing he does,is to see that everyone ditches those awful grey suits, whoever sanctioned that suit needs the sack, for me along with a good coloured suit, would be a nice blazer tie and trousers,

  22. Mighty Tim

Condolences to Mark’s family and friends

My son played along side Mark at St Ants until 2 years ago and knew him well.

It’s heartbreaking for his young wife and children.

    My thoughts are with them.

WC…..reading through the lines ,,completely covered,,,, that leaves lots of room for a Revolution Raffle.. ……

Most of us have had experience about complete cover…..but a wee bit of R@R…..that brings peace of mind….and it has the added attraction of being awfy braw…….let a few wee ponds sit there for spontaneous brawness…..
