Our midfield squad shuffle. Leigh, the panto misfit

550

I know what you are thinking, Ewan Henderson looked the part.  Even more so than his brother, Liam, who also left Celtic for a loan spell at Hibs, before moving to Italy.  That laser-precise pass at Tynecastle which set Celtic on their way to an important victory when Neil Lennon picked up the pieces left by Brendan Rodgers pointed to riches ahead.

Unlike many apparent teenage prodigies, Ewan never disappointed, trouble was, he did not play often enough to disappoint.  All we know for sure is that Lennon did not rely on him and after six months at Lennoxtown, Ange Postecoglou has moved him on.

Hibs, managed by Shaun Maloney, who worked with the player as a Celtic youth coach, is a good move.  He has a realistic chance of commanding a regular first team place in an aspirational side.  Celtic released him permanently for little more than an initial loan agreement that will prevent Ewan from facing them for the remainder of this season.

With two midfielders already signed this month, it is no surprise that Ismaila Soro is set to follow Ewan out the door.  For reasons that continue to perplex, MLS clubs continue to swoon around the edges of the Celtic squad, with New York Red Bulls reportedly hoping to add Ismaila to a list of former Celtic misfits that includes Patryk Klimala, Cameron Harper and Lewis Morgan, the latter moving from Inter Miami last month.

Another midfielder on the move is 20-year-old summer recruit from Sheffield Wednesday, Liam Shaw, who will spend the remainder of the season on loan at Motherwell.  Liam was one of the success stories in the win over Real Betis in December.  The move to Fir Park will hopefully give him an opportunity for first team football, it should also give you and me a better chance to assess his potential.

The Dundee pantomime season officially ends this week (oh yes it does) and Dundee are wondering what use they have for our on-loan panto act, Leigh Griffiths.  We are short of striker talent and Ange is still new to Scotland, so may be unfamiliar with how things work.  The panto season is also over in Glasgow, Leigh’s time at Celtic must also be over.

10 sleeps ’til Hibs.

Hotsmoked I agree regarding Mikey J. I got into this discussion last night and was more than happy that whether in his fan club or not that the posters on here would wish him well. I didnt see much in Soro who again might have been trying too hard. He had a strange wrap around tackle which was too easy to penalise for referees. Again he tried. Time to go. Good luck.

David Turnbull. I think this bhoy is outstanding. Ive spent time defending him on facebook and the like and it absolutely confuses me why some Celtic fans look more closely at his faults than his attributes. If his injury keeps him out hell become another player whos held in higher regard when hes not there. Just getting used to posting on here so thats the opinion. Ill peak through my fingers when someone inevitably tells me I know Hee Haw. I like Mikey and David. So there!

BIG WAVY, Good move for Soro.

*Absolutely at least he’ll be allowed to play fitba there. I think it’s a bit rich for Scottish fitba fans to look down their noses at the MLS; it’s not the old NASL which was just a retirement home for aging players.

As you are probably aware the MLS operates under a single-entity structure in which teams and player contracts are centrally owned by the league.

MLS salaries are limited by a salary cap, which has been in place since the league’s inception in 1996. The purpose of the salary cap is to prevent the team’s owners from unsustainable spending on player salaries and to prevent a competitive imbalance among teams, unlike European clubs with the oil rich investors there.

The designated player rule was instituted in 2007, to allow LA Galaxy to sign Beckham, and although he played with AC Milan and QSG after that he has since returned as president and co-owner of Inter Miami CF, an astute businessman he widnae have done that if it was a Mickey Mouse League.

In fact, IMHO it’s a far better league than the agricultural SPFL. Lots of talented players from Africa, Asia, Europe and North and South America are now playing their trade there. The only flops that I can recall who only lasted a season, if that, were former hun players like the mumbler boyd and misser.

I look out for our local team TFC but NOT always so as when that durty wee back stabbin hun was in charge I couldnae have cared less and would rather watch synchronized swimming or curling than look at his wee monkey face on the sidelines.

BTW I have been led to believe when he was living in Mississauga and we had a game against them he reached out to the local CSC including the famed Bramalea Club to see if he could come and watch it, Seemingly the response was “aye but wee cannae guarantee your safety” he never showed up.

Soro showed early promise but in the longer term he just wasn’t Celtic class. As someone else said, it happens.

I still believe Mikey Johnston is a very talented player who may still come good. I haven’t given up on him.

Not to smart……….he could have walked along the road to there club.

Didn’t know he lived in Mississauga.

  7. My opinion of Griff is simple. He has the talent, no doubt about that. Problem is he goes nowhere near to putting it all in, he tries about 60% at best.

I always look at Andy Robertson of Liverpool when the game ends, he looks totally drained, there’s the difference.

Personally I reckon Leigh is another corner boy similar Riordan and I want him nowhere near the club.

Pay up his contract and send him away .

*I believe he still considers himself a Celtic supporter if not a Tim. There was a photie in the Toronto Star while he was there of his 2 boys, one in a Celtic strip and the other a Scotland one.

Didn’t know he lived in Mississauga.

*I believe a lot of out of town Toronto sports personnel with family live there, nice and close for downtown via the Gardner or Lakeshore.

    Cheers Bada,

    Hopefully untrue.

  11. Soro played well for few weeks last season then found himself dropped for the cup final because Lennon didn’t want to pick players on form. Lennon currently remains unemployed…

Remarkably we continued to play Brown long after the season had crashed and burned.

Can’t help but feel Soro was mismanaged. I wish him well.

Maybe Johnston on a loan might be a good move.

£2.5 million plus 2 players, one of whom is Johnston, on a permanent deal doesn’t seem like value to me.

The Herald’s sports supplement is, in fact, a Sevco fanzine.

Today, an ‘article’ by someone called Graeme McGarry appeared on the back page . The entire piece was dedicated to the proposition that Mikey Johnston was a dud. I have never seen such a gratuitous attack on a young player. Regardless of differing opinions on Mikey, McGarry’s column was shameful.

  17. Boyle against packed defences would be an odd one to say the least….

    Cheers Saint Stivs …

    … but this depressing.

I well remember Martin playing, and speculated to another Celtic fan recently, that Ben might be his son ?

Can’t believe he is his grandson.

    Makes me feel old.

  25. You’d think we might be in the sweet spot with Wolf, right number of appearances, right age, but he has no caps for a middling European nation, and he’s at a club we’d normally look to sell to at his age. See Frimpong

    Probably better value elsewhere
