Patrick Roberts and getting the band back together

291

Patrick Roberts will finally be free of his well-compensated Manchester City contract next month.  The player made one appearance for his parent club in the seven years since joining from Fulham.  His two and a half years at Celtic between 2016 and 2018 remain his most celebrated, at the club where he has made more than twice as many appearances than any other.

It is hard to imagine, but four years ago, Patrick was the as Jota is today in almost every respect.  Having lit up our campaign from the wing, we all hoped to secure him on a permanent deal.  Patrick wanted to come too, but Pep Guardiola stopped a proposed £10m deal from proceeding.  I am sure he would walk from Sunderland to Celtic Park, if an offer was made.

What I know for sure is that we cannot base player assessments on what happened four years ago.  If we did, Patrick would be joined by Filip Benkovic at Lennoxtown.  The latter has made only 13 starts since leaving Celtic three years ago and none for Udinese, his current employer.

Last night, as I watched Patrick score the goal that took Sunderland to a Wembley play-off final and the chance of promotion to the EFP Championship, you could have tempted me to want him back.  He had an ability to create space in the most packed defences, something Celtic face more often than most teams.  He was built for Celtic Park.

Getting the band back together is fraught with difficulties.  Few return as effective as they were when they left.  Patrick needs to join (or stay with) a team operating at the top end of whatever league he plays in, one that spends most of their time attacking tight defensive formations.  Out of contract, he will be a bargain for someone.  Celtic have made far worse punts.

To those who say that Paddy Roberts should “never go back”, would you say the same to Kieran Tierney?

The chance of that even being possible is probably remote but a bhoy can dream!

    BTW, I like Greig Taylor.

After the game Jim McLean praised the Celtic supporters who were in fine voice throughout the game stating ‘With supporters like these how can you fail to become Champions.’

  3. The scottish football writers ( God help us ) are bang out of order announcing their poxy prizes weeks before the end of the season. In order to get in their jamboree prizegiving with ex barristers I suppose. Craig Gordon is a total cop out choice. If they could have given it to Allan McGregor they would have. I always remember in the Seville season with Celtic on their UEFA run and the title race tight that they declared Barry Ferguson the best player weeks before the competition ended. Another cop out , as holding midfield players or goalies are not always the players we pay to watch. Interesting though to see the clash between the woke bbc scotland and the warts, farts and all scottish football writers.

I suggested getting Paddy Roberts back a wee while back. Not many takers. Bringing him back for nothing for a year and see if he can regain the form he showed with us is a no-brainer for me. Imagine having a choice of the old him, Jota, Abada and a full fit James Forrest……..

I for one will be sad if Nir Bitton goes. He is the best passer of a ball of all our defenders.

Here’s to a grand celebration tomorrow night.

i was 15. I had got to every home and away match that season, basically my protestant granny who i lived with funded my turnstyle and ticket monies, and uncle duncan would put me on the greenock shammy bus free-gratis.

being a wee chappy if it was pay at the gate i would still try jump over, but looking back i didnt know it but i didnt really have a lot.

so anyways, in saint stephens in the afternoon, i had something on, cant remeber what, but the rest of the tims left after dinner time and made their ways to the various clubs (including my younger brothers and several younger cousins, me though didnt get out of school till quarter to four, ran home put my bag in, didnt get changed, kept uniform on, grabbed scarf but ……..

there was no money left out for me. disaster.

ran from park farm doon to woodhall anyway, get the bus and hopefully jump over.

stood at the chippy as bus after bus passed , picking up some, until i was left on my own, one bus slowed down, convenor shouted out, you missed you bus Stivs,

naw i am sure its coming you know they leave the club late all the time …….. having no money i didnt want to get on the bus and maybe get papped off.

the shammy bus never came, i definately did miss it. my eyes turned to woodhall station, will i try get to glasgow and take chance,

nae money, can i do it, …… i cheickened out, i really was quivering lipped, gutted, still stood at the bottom of heggies hoping someone i knew in a car would pass, but they didnt.

i didnt listen to it on radio, i went to football training , running around kicking every hun in the youth club.

    still hurts today.

Apologies to PHILBHOY, seems I was a tad premature (were have I heard that before😊) about the daft squabbles on here and repetitive boring posts.

  10. I take your point Tom McLaughlin, if only we could just talk about Celtic or respond to the post! In this case I am delighted for Patrick Roberts because he is the type of player who should win the prizes for the entertainment he provides. His resurgence though is no mystery, give a good player a good manager and he thrives. New Sunlun boss Alex Neil deserves some credit. Not surprising that Alex is from Coatbridge, which along with the areas around Bellshill Maternity Hospital, which sadly closed in 2001, is the cradle of scottish football imho.

  11. That Keiren Tierney fella at Arsenal, if our academy was any good it would be producing players like that

Roberts could easily fit in with Ange’s style of play, whether he would want to is another matter.

Dembele? Not had enough game time for me…

Lot of stuff on Twitter saying pubs/restaurants in Seville close next week before and after huns game…..

  17. Suspect Ange will be looking at bigger , faster. , stronger for new recruits , Tanner ba wingers combined with a tip tap midfield is off the menu

So Patrick and Karamoko will be plying their trade away from Celtic park

Anyway terrific season , thought Ange would be out at Christmas, which amongst other things, proves that modern football is a lot trickier to get your head around than the stuff we were brought up on

I’m now expecting improvement in Europe but have no clue what that means ; all the stars will need to align , a decent draw in the CL would be a start as opposed to a bunch of glamour ties against sides who will give us a pumping

This is starting to come together nicely, 33 degrees(no not those degrees) forecast for next Wednesday in Seville. Usually like to see them getting soaked wherever they go but al make an exception.

Hope the Chelsea supporters have got their alibi’s prepared !

  21. ` they are up against Senior Internationalists on our bench and have to be better than them `

Someone posted the above a few pages back. I think it is worth remembering when giving opinions on players we `should` buy to improve our team.

  22. As my blog name suggests, I was in the Manchester area when their hordes invaded. I can’t see them ever being invited back there again. Scenes of utter devastation. The local ITV station (Granada?) had started their coverage early in the morning before the game, interviewing a lot of those camping on the outskirts, like Eccles, where they had emptied the local Morrisons of alcohol. The local TV were quite captivated by their singing their quaint songs.

That same station’s coverage changed totally the morning after……

I sincerely hope they don’t repeat that performance in Seville. I do fear they will. Sure they did in Glasgow when they won their first league title last year.

My impression is that they suspect there’s going to be trouble, but are too polite, or scared, to mention it.

  29. Paddy Roberts performing like he did before, and Karamoko in the first-team, playing to the level that he was predicted of him, would make me very happy indeed – but it ain’t gonna happen.

  30. The stories of daring do on how they are getting to Seville, promoted in all the media has them as cup-winners before the game is played.

When it goes wrong they will have a long list of people and organisations to blame.

  31. There will be trouble in Seville, however it’s like predicting a snow-drift….you know it’s coming, but you don’t how much you’re going to get.
