Players and manager with common purpose

803

Could someone remind me the last time we heard rumours that Ronny Deila had players rebelling against him?  I heard it often, and put it to the club, but was told the players had bought-into the changes, then underway and largely unproductive.  I think we got our answer after the full-time whistle yesterday.  This is a group of players and manager with a common purpose.

Celtic are now top of the league, a point away from qualifying from the Europa League knock-out stages, and are beginning to look like a team, but the results are largely secondary to the transformation.  Even if Virgil’s 90th minute winner hadn’t arrived at Pittodrie, progress is evident.  The fragility and lack of cohesion which marked so many of our performances until early last month has gone.

Success has many fathers so it’s difficult to know exactly what’s behind the improvement.  Scott Brown’s return from injury helped enormously, as did the return of Mikael Lustig and Adam Matthews (although I thought Adam had a torrid time with Niall McGinn yesterday).

The blossoming of Stefan Johansen has to be the most striking element.  He has without doubt been the most improved player this season and an early contender for end of season awards.  By any measure, he had no right to score his goal yesterday.

The return of James Forrest, who yesterday played his fourth game in eight months, will give the squad an extra boost before the final two Europa League group games.  If he has fully recuperated from the problems which blighted him throughout this year, he’ll give fresh impetus to the pacey product Ronny is trying to hone.

You can get copies of Caesar & the Assassin, Billy McNeill and Davie Hay’s accounts of managing Celtic from Jock Stein’s departure until the appointment of Liam Brady, signed by both Billy and Davie here.

I don’t suppose the msm commented on the aberdeen fans going to the toilet during the minutes silence, which was clearly shown on sky.

I am extremely disappointed that a few of our fans attending the game did not observe the silence.

Tomorrow at 11 I’ll remember those on all sides in WWI who died for nothing. And those in WWII who died for something.

And the countless millions of innocents who died for others’ imperial ambitions and hatred of others. Especially those butchered by Britain’s imperial forces.

I’ll no more be compelled by poppy fascism and its glorification of war than I am by Dobbies trying to sell me stuff for Christmas from September onwards. Those who try to make me conform to their twisted political agendas and commercial greed can gtf. Always.

Because the lads of Celtic have shown the world the way,

They played the game in Lisbon and here is how they won,

They didn’t play defensive, attack is what they done.

The flags are out for Celtic, they know just what to do,

And Scottish hearts and Irish hearts are mighty proud of you.

In all the big world over the name of Celtic rung,

And in our heart of Glasgow our Celtic song was sung,

God bless you great eleven, this is your greatest day,

Next season Jock from Greenock we’re with you all the way.

The flags are out for Celtic, they know just what to do,

And Scottish hearts and Irish hearts are mighty proud of you.

You won so many cups this year, 4 or 5 or 6,

You should give one to Sevco, they’re really in a fix,

John Lawrence shook your hands lads as you came off the plane,

And everyone is proud of you, your football brought you fame.

The flags are out for Celtic, they know just what to do,

And Scottish hearts and Irish hearts are mighty proud of you.

Just a note, Celtic’s next game is at home against Dundee on 22nd November, I understand.

Remembrance Sunday, yesterday, is normally the Sunday falling closest to Armistice Day, tomorrow 11/11. We’ll see buses pulling over to the kerb at 11am among other solemnities.

Only eight Celtic games till Christmas.

Yes that would be the game. Gerry Baker and Tommy Bryceland were 2 tremendous players. Wasn’t Gerry born in America and his brother Joe in England?

Was it 1960 that we played them at ibrox and were getting hammered when there was an invasion to try and get the game stopped?

Strange that anyone can get offended by a few drunks breaking a minutes silence, mostly over which is becoming an antiquated war. Before I’m berated for my disrespect, I lost two great uncles in WWII, one in North Africa and the other shot down over France. Both my grandfathers served, but thankfully came home safely. I honor them almost every day, as their restored photographs are on the wall. I don’t need any silly political maneuvering to celebrate my ancestors and I’m sure to a man they would have been the first to join in any drunken singing.

I would prefer that we focus on our present largely sleekit war, which goes on as we go about our ordinary lives. Drone strikes killing innocent women and children, orchestrated on home soil, the targets many thousands of miles away. Those same drones are up there with cameras in our own airspace, silent and unseen with their telescopic lenses. All in the name of freedom dontcha know? CCTV was just sooo millennium.

  19. Zico, Saying a wee prayer every night for your niece, its good that she is upbeat & positive, this is hugely important in fighting this disease. Medical science has made huge strides in dealing with this. Wee local baby diagnosed with similar condition a few months back is now home with her Mam and is thriving, with Doctors extremely positive on long term prognosis. With the help of God your niece will have a similar result.

I was profoundly affected as a teenager when I read Testament of Youth by Vera Brittain, a nurse who served on the Western Front.

It all changed for me when the poppy was shamefully hijacked by Blair and his cronies for propaganda purposes relative to the illegal Iraq war. That is why I no longer wear a poppy but I completely respect and understand why people still do so.

What really depresses me as a Celtic supporter is the fact that a small minority of pig ignorant arseholes within our ranks seem to be incapable of shutting their traps for literally one minute, thereby dragging Celtic’s name through the mud in the eyes of the general public.

I understand your feelings to a point, but you’re swallowing the gutter media hysteria.

You’ll find that in reality the general public going about their daily business couldn’t give a monkeys.

The only only ones who are supposedly offended by this are the very ones not to give a rats erchie aboot.

  24. Personally do not wear the poppy as its been hijacked, is tokenism by many and just downright false in football circles. However, a minutes silence for innocent victims of war seems apt, but if I didn’t agree, I wouldn’t publically give the many sleekiit enemies of our great club any ammo. That would be self-indulgent. The reality is our support did just that, but the Msm is not interested in truth and reality.

I think the MSM have been shown for what they are during the liquidation of old Rangers and they don’t like the fact the new social media has gone through them. They know we all know the lies and spin. They will attack us for anything they can.

I sense the passion coming back to Celtic Park and the atmosphere at the Inverness game was better. It would be great to see the return of our full support at the Salzburg game which is massive for us.I think we need to win.
