Populist instigators without a plan

739

Loved the statement issued by the ‘3 Bears’ last night.  They protest that their offer to Rangers International was superior to the offer from Sports Direct, which was accepted.  What the sharp-eyed PR wizard didn’t figure when delivering the statement, though, is:

The board need 75% shareholder permission to dis-apply shareholder pre-emptive rights and create sufficient shares to allow the 3 Bears to fund their proposed share issue.

Support of the Easdale proxy block is needed to pass this dis-application.

Knowing they needed Easdale support, when the board asked if they would drop the EGM resolution to remove James Easdale from the board in order to make their proposal viable, the 3 Bears declined.

Consider the conversation:

A. “We’ll fund a share issue.”

B. “That needs Jimmy’s agreement.  Will you drop your plans to sack him?”

A. “No.  We’re still going to sack him.”

B. “Can’t do, Jimmy’s not going to vote for that.”

A. “It’s all your fault for not accepting our perfectly well thought-out proposal.”

It’s astonishing how shoddy an operation these clowns have.  I know no one in the media will explain the reality to fans, nor will they believe anything they read here.  When populist instigators for change have no viable plan, a club is deader than Rangers (mark I).

  1. KD a top mhan as a player for us but not the sharpest knife in the drawer when it comes to Scotlands problematic social issues. The defunct “Old Firm” is a big part of what has to be eradicated and Kenny is obviously not up to speed on that, based on his sad comments.

Absolutely certain the St. Bart’s bus was the first in ra’ Mulk. I can’t remember the names of the older guys that run it but Bobby Murdoch’s auld fella was a member. He lived in the Spittal but we let him on the bus cos’ of his son. There were other buses such as the Glenacre bus but our’s was the first.

The reaction to the ad by the media and others this week has been interesting. I don’t buy newspapers but I follow a few hacks on Twitter. What they are not saying is telling

When engaging in debates online on the lead up to the referendum last year, I started using model called Grahams Hierarchy of Disagreement . This is a 7 tier model that puts counter-arguments into a scale of credibility based on the type of response offered. These are:

    Level 1: Name-Calling ( E.g. ‘Rangers Haters’ , )

Level 2: Ad Hominem (E.g. You’re Obsessed Celtic Fans)

Level 3: Responding to Tone: (E.g. Waste of money, Should have been spent on Charity instead)

Level 4: Contradiction: (E.g. Rangers Then, Ranger Now. Rangers Forever)

Level 5: Counter Argument (E.g. No – Rangers was bought by the new company and were relegated to the 3rd Division)

Level 6: Refutation ( E.g. But Lord Nimmo Smith says, But the ECA says… )

Level 7: Refutation of the Central Point : (E.g. There’s Precedence – Leeds, Bristol City blah blah)

The model doesn’t measure the quality of the argument (It could still be utter drivel), but rather the type of argument. So it allows you to categorise the argument credibility of both yours and the party you are debating with.

No-one in the MSM (online anyway- I don’t read papers) to my knowledge have disagreed with the assertions stated in the ad at Level 7. Instead, they change the parameters of the debate. The narrative has moved to asking various ex-players ‘do you believe it’s the same club…’ Turning the debate from an argument based on fact, to one of subjective choice, and thus enabling the continuation of the myth.

Doesn’t really tell us anything we didn’t know, but it shows that the (lack of) critical response to the ad is evidence of why the ad and hopefully future statements are still, sadly required.

Glenacre was founded in 68, I was a member from about 10 years later but remember being told that St Bart’s was the first in Castlemiklk. Downcraig was another CSC at that time.

Think the Downcraig and Glenacre started 68, or one of them anyway. I’m sure a cmilk bus started 65ish, would that be Barts?

I remember going on the St. Bartholomew’s bus to a first away match (Clyde and Third Lanark didn’t count) against Stirling Albion where we lost 1:0 to a Henry Hall goal. That was in February 1966.

The only news report that tackled it at Level 7 was Andrew Smith’s piece in the Scotsman. He spoiled it by just making the assertions about English clubs surviving liquidation (and Italian & Spanish clubs getting away with tax issues and match fixing) without really explaining his positions. It was a fairly petulant piece but still managed to be the only one that even attempted to deal with the detail in the SH Fan Statement.

    My Celtic and Rangers thing…

Over the last few months I’ve had a lot of stick from Rangers fans after talking about their club, being critical and sometimes poking a little fun at what even they must see as quite an extraordinary situation which I’m sure makes them laugh and cry in equal measure.

Old clips of an interview at Ibrox I did (went to watch Rangers v St Johnstone when Gazza/Coisty were there) are doing a roaring trade on the retweet circuit, as it rightly suggested at the time that I had a soft spot for the club going back to early teens.

So why the love in for Celtic Football Club now?

Well, my mate, a Rangers fan , taught me the sash as a kid, extolled the virtues of being British and proud, and that Rangers Football Club were a beacon of this pride.

And then I started to read, learn for myself the history of the club, my Britishness, Celtic and came to a swift, quite embarrassing conclusion.

There is very little (Poppy tribute aside, as my family faught for my freedom of speech and my nation) to celebrate about Rangers in my opinion. Virtual sporting apartheid for many years, not allowing one part of the community to play for them was quite frankly a disgrace, and that alone, knowing all about how one group of people look down on another, would have been enough to move on from those Rangers “supporting ” days.

Then I learned of very close links historically between some Rangers supporters and right wing nutters who follow Chelsea, who themselves extols the virtues of an anti black, anti immigrant, anti inclusion mantra. Not for me thanks!

But why actively then choose a fondness for Celtic?

A club founded by immigrants, actively encourages immigrants in its support ( don’t worry, wankers monkey chanting Mark Walters are wankers, and I’m convinced in my own mind, from what I’ve seen that Celtic FC is way more inclusive than not,I’m not stupid). Is actively anti fascist an has embraced Catholic and Protestant footballers from year dot. In other words, a club who would have embraced my religion merely as a sportsman, not the disgusting apartheid that, if I were a Roman Catholic footballer wouldn’t have allowed me in the 70’s to wear a blue football shirt.

I don not support the IRA , so anyone trying that one can with respect fuck off, I’m a proud English Republican, and that’s where my Republican fervour lies, a Royal family is a relic of yesteryear, and again yesteryear rather than a bright tomorrow seems to be celebrated rather too much for my liking at Rangers.

I’ll take stick for this and that’s fine. I respect Rangers football club achievements, the many fine players they’ve had and the wonderful support given to Fernando Ricksen last week was truly touching.

But I don’t like what Rangers stood for and in many ways continue to stand for, I feel closer and more aligned to what Celtic Football Club stand for.

I support neither, I support Aston Villa Football Club, but I’ve been asked the question many times on Twitter I decided to address it.

  8. Marrakesh Express on

ALL Scottish journalists/pundits know the ad is the truth.

    Some would never admit it.

Others would like to back it but can’t out of fear of hun backlash or losing their job.

I was a junior member of the Bart. bus early seventies.

I remember once we run a joint bus with Downcraig to a midweek SC replay in Aberdeen. The first pick up was outside St. Margaret Mary’s chapel which is where I got on (I was a St. Maggies Secondary and forgot to go back in the afternoon). The bus was due to pick up St. Bart. members at the bottom of Castlemilk Drive but sailed right passed them as it was full. This caused a lot of bad feeling between the two buses after that.

Big Billy scored the winner that night and it was “Nice One Billy, Nice One Son….” all the way back from Aberdeen and the bus broke down in the middle of nowhere. Them were the days.

  18. There are many posters on various sites who put forward the image that Rangers (dead or alive) is just another football club, supported by just an ordinary bunch of fans.

This is an entirely false image.

Rangers (dead) were a club, whose core values were racial and religious prejudice.

This core value has been cemented and hardened, as the foundation of the new club playing at Ibrox.

Anyone who puts forward any argument that Scottish football and Scotland as a nation needs Rangers (any Rangers) is trying to argue that racial and religious prejudice is something the nation needs.

You CANNOT just ignore this issue.

It IS the foundation of the club.

It IS the core value which motivates the club’s followers.

In fact, if this value was to be extinguished from the club forever, the club would probably not have any supporters at all.

Please don’t try to argue that this is just a football club, like any other. It is not.

It has a long and proud history which should be a source of shame.

Instead, that history is proudly heralded at every opportunity.

If a new Rangers can be formed, devoid of any anti-Irish, anti-Catholic prejudice, it would be as welcome as any other club.

But, would it survive without that core support?

    Hi m6bhoy!

Great recommendation for Rod Stewart’s ‘Atlantic Crossing’ Album! Ashamed to admit I have never really listened to any of Rod’s material other than his well known singles. Went onto the full album YouTube link to listen to ‘Sailing’, but found myself listening over and over (and jamming with my guitar and blues harmonica to) ‘All in the name of Rock ‘n Roll’! Great stuff! :-) You learn a new thing every day! :-)

No hero of mine for reasons I have often stated on here.

Tell me ONE thing he’s done for Celtic since getting his wish and leaving the club in the lurch in August 1977.

Tell me why we shouldn’t attempt to revise this position the Celtic rank and file – including yourself – seem to hold that he is a “hero” and “legend”.

Newcastle United boss Mike Ashley faces ‘fit and proper’ quiz by MPs over Glasgow Rangers bid

Mike Ashley has been summoned to Westminster to be questioned by MPs over his involvement in Glasgow Rangers.

The news comes after an MP asked whether the Sports Direct billionaire is a fit and proper person to be linked to Ibrox.

If summoned, Ashley 50 must attend.

Answering questions goes against the character of a man who keeps his cards close to his chest, the Daily Record reports.

Central Ayrshire MP Brian Donohoe used parliamentary privilege to lay into the world’s 293rd richest man without fear of legal comeback.

Richard Sellers/Getty ImagesNot happy: Newcastle fans have swamped the club with protests this year

He likened Ashley to an “asset stripper”.

He added: “We need to bring some transparency into the affairs of Mike Ashley and into the affairs of Rangers.”

Ashley’s reluctance to talk has infuriated fans of Newcastle United, who he owns.

Rangers fans want answers, too, as he manoeuvres behind the scenes to up his stake in the club.

Donohoe went on the warpath at the Commons Scottish affairs committee.

He asked whether a billionaire who dumped more than 200 USC workers on the dole without the money due to them was fit to hold sway at Ibrox.

Action ImagesNewcastle United owner Mike Ashley watches from the standsAshley: The Newcastle United owner watches from the stands

The onslaught came on the day Sports Direct gave skint Rangers a £10million loan.

But the first £5million of that will also be used to repay an earlier £3million loan from Ashley.

Donohoe said: “The committee have already called City Link to book and indeed have made an approach to me to see if it would be the same thing to call Ashley to the committee to answer for what he has done to the company that he is responsible for.”

Dozens of the USC workers made redundant when Sports Direct appointed receivers early in the New Year worked at a warehouse in Dundonald in the Labour MP’s constituency.

Donohoe, secretary of the Westminster Rangers Supporters’ Club, said: “He doesn’t care a damn.

“The USC situation is a murky affair that calls into question the way some businesses are allowed to operate.

Richard HeathcoteRangers bid: Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley may have to stand in front of MPs

“What will the cost to the public purse be to support people put out of a job without the money owed to them?

“Given that all the companies involved are owned by Sports Direct, isn’t this simply a scam to let Sports Direct off their financial responsibilities?

“Would we agree with a BBC quote from an asset stripper that the law in these circumstances is a pirate’s charter? I wonder whether or not that description could be applied to Mr Ashley?

“Is Mr Ashley a fit and proper person to be buying shares and giving loans to Rangers and to appoint his men on the board?”

Laurence GriffithsFit and proper? Mike Ashley was slammed by an MP

Donohoe suggested that an Ashley takeover of Rangers – which should not happen as he owns Newcastle – was well under way and the SFA should be checking his credentials.

The MP called on Business Minister Jo Swinson to set up an inquiry into Ashley’s affairs “both at USC Dundonald and his interest in Glasgow Rangers”.

Committee chairman Ian Davidson confirmed members would look at USC and consider what witnesses to call

Unbelievable guff from this rag.Donohoe surely has to take the trophy for”The stupidest person not to do irony”.I have read and heard it all now.MA is not fit and proper, but by not giving him a mention,King is.
